Love It!!
I was given this book by a friend during my first pregnancy and have since given it as a gift to several of my other friends who are expecting. I had several books given to me and this one was by far the easiest to use and the most informative. If you like the facts then this book is for you. The book explains some of the things the doctors check for at regular exams but don't explain to you. It even has a handy reference guide for all the problems you might experience, the reasons they occur, and things you can try to alleviate them. It is a small book just packed with information.

Best preganancy book written
This is the book I buy for any expectant mother I know. My first copy was purchased 13 years ago and info not out dated!
I refered to this book over and over again throughout my pregnancies.

Incredibly useful
Having just found out I am pregnant my sister gave me this book and it is so useful. Incredibly useful. I am one of those women who are coming to motherhood late - in my late thrities and without any experience of either pregnancy or children in the family much. It is a bit nerve-wracking (as well as marvellously joyous) so this book has proved to be a real salve to my nerves. It is so straightforward, well set out and has a plethora of easy to access information to take you through the pregnancy and after.

The contents are divided into 15 sections - the second chapter is the one I turned to immediately - it has all the pictures and information about the developing baby - even photos of what the fetus looks like at various stages. There is certainly a lot to think about health wise as well - Chapters 4 and 5 are on eating and fitness during pregnancy.

Other chapters deal with making a Birth plan for yourself, managing labour, dealing with common complaints, sex during pregnancy, preparing for the baby, and there are three chapters at the end on issues dealing with being new parents.

I have found this book comforting in the extreme. I realise once the pregnancy gets more advanced I will be in an antenatal group and generally have more contact with people who know about what the hell is going on. But for a first time mother with a lot of burning questions to ask and not many people to go to about them it is a wonderful reference book to have on hand.

Good general information, great picutres
I purchased this book before my husband and I began trying to conceive. There is a lot of great information about conception and fertility/infertility, although it would be nice if the author would include a section on the Fertilty Awareness Method and how it can be used to understand your individual cycle and identify any possible fertility problems. The photographs are wonderful, and the general information for each of the trimesters is great. I have found that now that I am pregnant I turn to more detailed books each night. This book describes each four weeks of development in only two pages, most of which have pictures. As a result, the information tends to be a little general. This would be a good gift for a first-time expecting mom, and I found it very informative as my first book on pregnancy and childbirth, but I wouldn't depend on it as your only resource if you like to be well informed about all of the details.

Very Comprehensive, extraordinarily helpful
After looking through dozens of very depressing, frightening pregnancy books, I was thrilled when my freind gave me Stoppard's book. She is very thorough and covers various alternatives including natural remedies and home births. Whatever type of pregnancy and delivery you want, Stoppard covers all of your options in great detail. Her book is very up beat and helps women to keep a very positive attitude during what can be a very trying time. It has been a very useful reference for me

My Pregnacy Bible
I bought this book the minute that I found out that I was pregnant. Of all the books I've read, including the famous "What to Expect.." this is by far my favorite. Not only does it present various birth options and plans in an unbiased, visual, friendly and positive way, but it chooses not to dwell on possible complications-while still educating the reader.(Unlike "Your Pregnancy Week by Week")
I found the book to be well-organized and informative. The illustrations and photography are beautiful, fascinating and made me look forward to each stage of my pregnancy.
The language of the book is straightforward and non-condescending. I highly recommend this book as a positive resource for any first time moms.

Another great book by Stoppard!
Once again I was not let down by this book, one of Stoppard's latest. From cover to cover this book is full of precious advice that can help you become an enthusiastic parent. The book outlines each phase of your child's development and provides examples of games that you can play to refine his/her natural intelligence. Like all of Stoppard's books, the book's layout is very appealing and simple to follow. What I like in particular are the pages dedicated to each stage of your child's development. She covers each milestone in every aspect from mental development to bladder control. For example, I never knew that potty training was such an incredible act of mental and physical maturity! Even for this she explains all the whys and hows. Once you finish the book, you will understand what it means to "teach" your child, which does not mean just reading, writing and arithmetic.
My only complaint: The book is just a wee bit too short. Then again, maybe that means I was just enjoying it too much.

What to Teach and When...
Some people I have met online say there is really no need for parents to read up on childcare...but I disagree. From the moment a child is born, they are learning. As a parent, you become their teacher, playmate and counselor. From the very start you need...information...information...and more...information.

This is a practical guide to help parents of babies and young children understand and develop their child's unique abilities. Dr. Stopppard explains how children achieve each milestone and includes a stage-by-stage guide for parents. You will find ideas for games, activities and play that will help parents to be their child's first teacher.

The homemade fun section looked especially fun with clay, soap bubbles, modeling dough, finger pain, pasta jewelry, vegetable printers, rainy day beach , edible finger pain for babies, baby play dough and more.

The seven sections include:

Parent as Teacher (Skills that encourage learning, rearing helpful children, using discipline positively, communicating successfully with your child)

The Normal Course of Development (Understanding the stages, charting development, mental development, locomotion, sociability, personality, speech)

Factors Affecting Development (health, happiness, parental attitudes, gender, personality, empathy, vulnerability, stress), Simple Tests (taste, hearing, verbal skills, intelligence, observation, perception, vision)

Tools for Learning (providing a stimulating environment, choosing toys, using household items to make toys, home-made fun, the computer, television and video, books and reading, toys for various ages up to 7 years)

The Special Child (The gifted child, under-achieving child, autistic child, child who stutters, child with learning disorder, sight-impaired child, physically disabled child)

Your Child and School (Choosing a nursery, starting Primary School, The changing relationship between you and your child)

The special chapter on Locomotion is very interesting. You can see what a child should be doing by a certain age and what you can do to help. Some of these ideas will come naturally to parents, but others were new ideas I had not yet seen. The handy index makes this book easy to use and you can look up age groups very easily.

I love the colorful illustrations and easy-to-find age groups. Once you read the toy section...you will be heading off to the toy store! How did parents survive without this guide? It is an exhaustive study of what a child should be learning and when. This is a must for new parents and is really a gift for a child to give them a great start in life.

Informative Book for first time moms
This book was very informative for a first pregnancy. It is filled with color pictures, and a great section on "breaking the news to your boss" that I noticed my other books lacked. It answers a lot of questions that books like "What to Expect When Expecting" don't really go into detail on such as the different types of chairs/positions for birth, the differences and effects of the pain medications, etc.

RE: Breastfeeding. If you happen to be a woman who doesn't intend on breastfeeding, skip this section. This section is why I dropped my rating on the book. This woman admits to breastfeeding her child until 23 months you can hardly listen to much of her advice. Outside of that she sees no possible reason to not at least try...

Besides that it is a great book.

A Celebration of Pregnancy
"There's one thing I can guarantee: The second your baby is born, your relationship takes on new dimensions. You and your partner grow even closer if you take time out, with minimum interruption, to bond with our baby. The first weeks, days, months, perhaps more than any time, are very special indeed - and the bonding you do now with each other and your baby will set the seal for the rest of your life." ~ Miram Stoppard

Dr. Miriam Stoppard is one of my favorite authors because she is obsessed with detail. She knows how to collect the information on pregnancy and childcare and how to present it in a lovely way that will encourage you to absorb the details and enjoy the reading process.

If you are thinking about getting pregnant or are already finding yourself full of questions about your new pregnancy, this is one of the books I can highly recommend. You will laugh along with the author when reading "Am I pregnant?"

You might be asking questions like:

Should I keep my pregnancy a secret?
How do I deal with unsolicited advice?
Doctor or Midwife?
Am I too old for this?
What happens on the second time around?
What should I eat/not eat?
How much weight is ok to gain?
Can I still work out?
Can I still dye my hair?
How will my sex life be affected?
What is Prenatal testing all about?
What is going to happen to my body after the birth?
How long should I breastfeed?

There is a handy chart to help you figure out when your baby will be due according to your LMP. There are also handy notes about websites, especially the one about the most complete source of baby names on the web.

The actual birth section is extensive and it gives you a look into what is actually going to occur, so there are no surprises.

The basic contents include:

The Exhilarating Early Weeks
So You're Going to be a Mother
Forty Weeks and Counting
Stages of Childbirth
The Early Days and Weeks
You and Your Baby's Well-Being

What I like most about this book is that they say if you are considering getting pregnant between the ages of 35 and 40, you can have a successful pregnancy.

A colorful, fun book that will help you enjoy a healthy pregnancy.

Dads Should Read This Too
I wish this well-written, pertinent fountain of wisdom had been around when my wife was giving birth--so I could have had a better idea of what was going on. Superb marshalling of facts and information to cover every facet of childbirth. Written with style and humor. The artwork--photos and illustrations--makes it a joy to read. I'm making sure my three daughters will each have a copy when their time comes.

Baby & Child A to Z Medical Handbook
This is the best shower gift I ever received. I received this book 13 years ago when I was pregnant with my first child and I am still using it today. It is a great easy reference book for not only new Moms, but old Moms as well. With three kids, it has kept me from calling the doctor with stupid questions many times. Great gift!

diagnostic! specific! an easy reference!
A number of child-care books have the frustrating problem of being too vague. For example, a number of books I own will say something along the lines of: "if there is X symptom, call your doctor." But I want to know what does X symptom mean? Why is it occurring and why do I need to call the doctor? This book is helpful in these regards.

You look up a symptom such as "rashes" and it will lead you to the various diseases/illnesses that express themselves with rashes, and you can try to figure out which one best fits your child. The book is also arranged alphabetically so that you can look up, e.g., "diarrhea" and it will list the common causes, the symptoms, how to treat it, whether you should consult a doctor, what the doctor might do, etc.

A very useful diagnostic tool.

(If it came with photographs rather than drawings, I would give it 5 stars.)

Outstanding Reference !!!!
Miriam Stoppard has written an outstanding work of reference of common & not so common childhood illnesses & injury. The outstanding feature of this work teaches the parent when it's OKay NOT to take baby to the doctor. It teaches the parent what problems can effectively be dealt with at home, and how to deal with each problem. It also includes threshold signs & symptoms that identify when it really is time to get the little one to professional, competent medical care. The book also advises the parent when it's time to activate EMS for the most urgent medical emergencies. As an Emergency Paramedic I give copies of this book away to friends, family and patients like candy. This is an outstanding work that no home with children under ten years of age should be without.

An excellent resource for first time parents.
As a first time mother of twins, I needed help with a lot of the basics. Everything from telling me how to change a diaper, dressing my babies, to what to do when they were ill. It has great information on what to expect from month to month with your child's development. I found this book full of helpful information, and now I buy it as a gift for any of my friends who are expecting their first child.

From infancy through preschool...
Dr. Miriam Stoppard's books are simply the best books on childcare I have seen. She encourages parents to be independent, confident and free to follow their instincts.

This is an essential guide for raising a healthy child. Over 375,000 copies have already been sold so I knew this book had to hold some very important information. Dr. Miriam does not claim to cover everything. In fact, she has quite a number of books on child care. Some are much less detailed. She claims that this book covers the "most important aspects" of child care in the first five years.

Her practical style of writing and explanations of complicated issues has won her a devoted following around the world. What you will find in this book is an updated, authoritative, practical, and comprehensive illustrated guide to the first five years of life. The latest recommendations for day-to-day care and suggestions for enhancing your child's health will be invaluable to a new parent.

A number of case studies are included to help parents who are raising children with special needs or caring for twins. A section on how to celebrate the differences in boys and girls will be welcomed by a parent who might be surprised. :)

The main sections include: Everyday Care, Play and Development, Family Life, Children with Special Needs, Medicine and HealthCare, Personal Records, First Aid and Useful Addresses for more information. An index completes this reference size work.

Whether you are a parent expecting your first baby or have already given birth, there is so much fun information to learn. There is also a nice section on "organizing your life."

Highly recommended for new parents or for parents who didn't have this book the first time around. I have never seen a baby & child care book which dealt with so many issues all in one book. A must-have guide for Dr. Stoppard fans and for those who are just discovering her books.

A must-have for every first time parent
When I had my daughter, I was looking for a book that would cover everything. This book has it all, in an incredibly easy to read format, w/lots of bright and cheerful photos. There is plenty of practical information (e.g. how to bathe, dress and feed your child), medical information, and suggestions on how to handle more complex issues (e.g. how to help your child develop healthy self esteem and social skills). I found the book to be well-organized, w/the material presented in a format that helps you to see what's appropriate for your child's age and gender. Although a previous reviewer found it biased against boys, I think that it is helpful to know that there really are differences between boys and girls, that they each develop differently, and that you don't need to resort to stereotypes to try to parent them appropriately. There were even case reviews which were interesting and presented in a very friendly and respectful way. An excellent book all around.
