A Home Run Daily Devotional!
This Daily Devotional is very readable. It makes the Bible come alive for every day living and recovery. This is a very inspiring resource for people in recovery. Each month one of the 12 Steps is covered. There is a short Bible reading for each day which is thoughtfully discussed and then applied to living in our own times in recovery.

Excellent Healing Advice
Dr. Stoop combines teachings from the Bible with psychology to demonstrate how principles of good mental health can enable a person to create a better life. This book gets to the practical application of these principles. It literally tells you what to do to put them into practice. Readers are taught how to change self-defeating thoughts into thoughts leading to positive behaviors.
Even people who are already familiar with the value of positive self-talk can reap the benefits of this book by being reminded of the power of this potential which is available to everyone.
He gives examples of how it has worked successfully in the lives of various people from differenct backgrounds.
Unlike a lot of other books in this genre, he devotes a chapter to the abuse of positive self-talk by putting it into a broader context than most authors. Stoop addresses the issue of the sovereignty of God in the matter of faith and positive confession. He goes on to point out that self-talk isn't something we create, it already is going on, the issue is learning how to use this reality to one's advantage.

Masked intolerance
I respect the rights of parents to explain these issues to their children within the context of their own beliefs, but this book crosses the line, in my opinion. When dealing with the question "Why do terrorists say that God is telling them to attack people" (page 111), the answer includes the opinion that "the God the terrorists follow is a very distant, unloving God who does not love his people but demands that they obey him and follow the teachings of Islam..." Is that really want you want to teach your child? Pick and choose carefully from this book, if you must, but avoid swallowing it whole.
Great Help
It is very helpful if you have kids. I have a 7 year old girl who is having trouble understanding why the terrorists did what they did (so do I). In disagreement with the Masked Intolerance reviewier, the truth is worse than what the book states. Not only does "the God the terrorists follow...not love his people but demands that they obey him and follow the teachings of Islam...", those teachings include:(Qur'an 9:29)"Wage war on the people of the Book (Jews and Christians), who ... do not accept the religion of Islam."(Qur'an 9:14) "Fight against them (the Jews and Christians)! Allah shall punish them, at your hands." "Wage war for the sake of Allah. Kill whoever denies Him." (Muhammad quoted on P52 SA Qureshi, Selected Writings of Hasan al Banna Shaheed)(Qur'an 8:39 & 2:193)"Make war on them until idolatry does not exist any longer and Allah's religion reigns universally."(Qur'an 9:5)"Kill the unbelievers wherever ye find them, capture and besiege them and prepare for them every kind of ambush." The previous reviewer asks "Is that really want you want to teach your child?" No. But it is what it is. Let's not teach tolerance and deny reality simply because it makes us feel good.
