I enjoyed this book and its stories and recipes. I have tried several of the recipes, for example the Bean and Barley soup and the mandel bread, and they were very good. The stories made me laugh and cry.

Overall, I would say this book is not the best. I have not thoroughly reviewed fieldworking textbooks, but I found this one to be a little dry, and I am not a fan of the author either. There is something about her voice that is irking. The only plus that I would give this book is that there are a lot of examples of different ways to write a fieldworking paper. As a person who has never written one, I found these helpful because I was able to compare my voice and style to those of the authors' students. If you can find this in another book, however, go with the other one. This book is just okay.

I have used this book for some time with a range of undergraduates at UC Berkeley. Several of my colleagues use it as well. It is a very helpful, practical introduction to real-world research, the most useful book we have found on the subject. It helps students and researchers understand the processes of interviewing, making field notes, and collecting and recording data. The style is very accessible. Students who have found it useful for other classes include those studying sociology, anthropology, fiction, advanced nonfiction, and ethnic studies.

Read in combination with some complex books of ethnography, including Clifford Geertz, for example, it can provide the structure to help students understand the concept of fieldwork.

I highly recommend taking a look at this one.

Although this book was written in 1990 and many changes have taken place since then, and changes continue to be made, the accuracy is unbelievable. Personally, I believe the military person should read this to see what it feels like to be a military spouse. Only military spouses know the actual hardships and I for one am glad I read this book. It gave me persmission to finally say that yes, being a military spouse is hard without sounding like a complaint. Being a military spouse is easier than it was 20 years ago and let's hope if another book is written in 20 years, it will be much better still. This book gives a voice to military wives that has been quiet for so long . My only regret is that I didn't read the book in 1990!!

Anyone with an interest in the sociological perspectives of being a military spouse as well as anyone living in a democratic society will find this book eye-opening, thought-provoking, and potentially disturbing. Published a decade ago and now out of print, one would like to think it is because the themes are outdated-- but while they may be under increasing opposition from the "new spouses" and other much-needed forces of change, military spouses past and present will recognize and be able to relate to the accounts outlined within. Definitely not something I'd give to a prospective military spouse unless I was seeking to discourage him/her from marrying into the military. Nonetheless, this book is thought-provoking and really leaves one questioning what our armed forces stand for... the irony seems to be that the very things we cherish as Americans are denied to military spouses, including basic civil rights, fundamental independence, and freedom from coercion and forced servitude. Viewed collectively, the authors seem to paint an extremist view-- but from spouse abuse, to denial of employment, to isolation from family and friends, to discrimination against immigrant wives, to unspoken pressure to have children, and to other unique facets of military family life, the individual accounts are often right on the money. This book takes a factual approach, greater in scope but in some ways similar to the provocative fictional piece by Charlie Hudson (Orchids in the Snow).

This lady just blows my my mind away with her other book beginnings. This book does the same.The math in this book is all most unbelievable.

I have read many Alex Mack books, but when I came accross reading this one, I didn't find it interesting and it didn't really seem like an Alex Mack story to me. Two thumbs down. Try reading the book yourselves and see what you think.

The one thing that has always bothered me about writing for and about kids is that the stories are either too simplistic or way overused. CIVIL WAR IN PARADISE is just such a story. Instead of focusing on the characters and finding exciting stories involving character growth, the writers of the Alex Mack books have fallen into the "do-gooder" trap: the actions of the characters must be righteous and noble, instead of outgrowths of the personalities, wants, and desires. In the television series, Alex and Nicole Wilson react to situations and do things as kids will normally do: They plunge ahead, making mistakes, sometimes incorrect judgements, until they are steered, usually by parents or teachers, into the right direction. And sometimes, those directions are unsatisfying and saddening. Constant success in stories is unfulfilling to the character. They become staid, because they have no reason to change. Where the book series gets it wrong, is that Alex, Ray, Robin, and Nicole are too noble, urealistically so. CIVIL WAR is a good example. The developers are always bad. The people who save the fort are always good. When the facts are that every action in life is potentially noble and, equally, potentially disasterous. What if saving Fort Paradise actually did hurt the town of Paradise Valley? Real life and the show would have seriously presented that possibility. The books simply gloss over it.
