This is an excellent collection of true life vignettes about prosecutors and the cases they work on. The chapter discussing Rudy Giuliani's tenure in the justice department during the Reagan administration (written long before he became mayor of NYC) is particularly interesting because it portrays him in a very unflattering light. An entirely different perspective on the man the country has come to love after 9/11.

Anything by James Stewart is worth reading.

This book, while based on incidents now over two decades old, is an interesting look into the oft-secret world of high-power, blue-chip law firms. Each chapter comprises a case study of a selected firm and its relationship to a corporation through a precis of a particular case. Various kinds of law, from takeovers, to trusts and estates, to litigation, and more, give the book a rounded view. Along with The Paper Chase and L-100, a must read for any prospective law student.

This was James Stewart's first book which portended the talent that would give us "Den of Thieves" and "Blood Sport," among others. Mr. Stewart is a great story teller - he can make a seemingly mundane subject into a real page-turner. The Partners offers fascinating insight into the rarified world of white-shoe New York law firms. Especially interesting is the story of Cravath, Swain and Moore - where attorneys work 10 years without a day of vacation and one attorney gets passed over for partnership because he rode a motorcycle to work. Yikes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I haven't yet read the new James Stewart book about 9/11 but all of the others are very interesting, fair balanced accounts of the chosen subject matter. Highly recommended.

Michael Milken served only 22 months of a 10-year sentence? Unbelievable! His time served surely doesn't send a message to those who consider the potential consequences of their criminal activities. The book was hard to put down - the author's research was in-depth and fascinating. The book can really get your blood boiling, such as when Milken introduces his "good friend, Jesse Jackson" - an obvious P.R. strategy intended to influence a potential jury of minorities. In fact, Milken's entire P.R. directed campaign makes you sick. Milken is indeed a talented financier, and there was no need for him to act criminally. How many millions, excuse me, BILLIONS, is enough? The author's work is a necessary read for those interested in business history and for those working in the financial services industry. Many feel that history will judge Milken in a favorable light - but I hope that our society never views tax evasion and fraud in a positive light. The book gave me a new appreciation for those serving the public, as the author tells us about the hard work of officials at the SEC and at the U.S. Attorney's Office in New York. Business can be conducted with trust and integrity, and when combined with good old-fashioned hard work, becomes a success story.

You get a good closeup look at some of the most dominant figures in the world of high finance during their time.Michael Milken, Dennis Levine,Ivan Boesky,and Dennis Levine about brought to the front and center due to the efforts of this book. The tactics(such as stock Parking)are explained in this book. The number one financial tool of this era,junk bonds also recieve adequate attention and explanation in this writing. The king of the junk bond Michael Milken is well highlighted in the book as well.Also portrayed in the book was the prosecution efforts of Rudolph Guliani. The greedy nature of these people and of this time is adequately highlighted due to this book. In Den of Thieves, James Stewart gives us a gripping account of the insider trading ring that almost brought down Wall Street.

As a student studying finance, I was told to read this book by my cousin who worked in the financial world. After I finished, I had a more realistic view of the intensity of Wall Street. This intense competition and desire for money drove some people over the edge. Such was the case for Michael Milken, Ivan Boesky, Terry Mulheren, and their cohorts. To a certain extent, these men were driven to cheat and steal by insatiable greed.

You do not have to know much about the financial world to enjoy this fast paced thriller. The joy in this book is in the hunt. Once the SEC became aware of Milken's activities, they had to find a way to prove it and then had to take Milken down. Once Milken was taken out of his office in handcuffs and Rudy Guliani began to build his case, Milken's "associates" began to sing like canaries in the hope of cutting a deal with the government.

I love reading books about criminals who get what is coming to them. Michael Milken and friends deserved every bit of jail time they got. This definitely a book about criminals getting what they deserved. James Stewart draws you in within the first 20 pages, from there I hope you have some spare time because you will not be able to put it down.

In this book, originally published in 1976, Stewart provides a basic history of the abolitionist movement beginning with the period of the American Revolution. While most think of abolition as a 19th-century movement, Stewart demonstrates that this period is also important in examining this movement. Many states, primarily in the North, found that the institution of slavery conflicted with the ideas of republicanism that they were using to defend their own rights. During the years following the Revolution, the Northern states abolished slavery either immediately through court decisions as in Massachusetts, or through gradual programs as in New York. The ideas of the Revolution also played an important role in antislavery movements throughout the 19th century.

In examining the 19th Century movement, Stewart focuses most of his book on the Antebellum period and shows the importance of religion and moral suasion in the movement. Stewart also examines how, as time progressed, the movement expanded into the political realm through third parties such as the Liberty and Free Soil parties and how the ideas of the abolitionists influenced the formation of the Republican Party in the mid-1850s. Divisions emerged over the extent to which the abolitionists should become involved in politics and parties corrupted by slaveholders.

The main weakness of this book, in my opinion is that the Civil War years are only briefly covered. It was during these years that the abolitionists were able to put the most pressure on the federal government to take action against slavery. It was also during these years that many of the goals of the abolitionist movement were met. While racial equality was not obtained during Reconstruction, certain rights were guaranteed through Constitutional amendments. Abolitionists played roles in turning the Civil War into a war merely to preserve the Union into a war to create "a more perfect union." This role should be more fully examined in a history of the abolitionist movement.

This is the "Absolutely, positively, without a doubt everything you want to know about Whitewater" book. I really do not think there is one shred of info left out, the Independent Prosecutor would be hard pressed to put together such a detailed and complete history. I doubt even the combined recollection of all the people involved know as much about Whitewater as what is in this book. That should give you a pretty good idea of what the book is about, the author does through in a little about the campaign, travel gate, Vince Foster and a few other early Clinton scandals, but the true heart of the book is the Whitewater investigation.

The book does not flow as quickly as his last book "Den of Thieves" nor is it as gripping. It is, however, a very well constructed and researched book. If you are interested in this particular issue then I have not come across a book with a better non-partisan telling of this story. If you are looking for an overall detailed account of the election or the first four years in the Clinton White House I would suggest the Woodward books "The Agenda" and "The Choice" and the Elizabeth Drew book "Showdown: The Struggle between the Gingrich Congress and the Clinton White House".

When I opened this book I was hoping for all the juicy details on the Presidents dirty deeds in Ark. In some ways I got what I wanted and I didn't. The book has a ring of truth and fairness about it. On the one hand Stewart lets the President off on the Whitewater charges but spills the beans on all the other dirty little secrets. Those who want to see Mr Clinton fall will be disappointed with this writing and those want to see the President exeronated will also be disappointed. But then again the truth is usually disappointing. Read the book, it's a good read. But be prepared to wade through a lot of detail to get to the truth.

If anyone is still interested in what the fuss was all about, they should read this. Blood Sport is written totally objectively and deals with all the players involved in every Clinton scandal except for Monica, which broke after publication.

The book details the business partnerships the Clintons had with the McDougals from the 1970's on the 1990's and its fall out. The story stretches from Arkansas to the White House and even goes a bit into the suicide of Vince Foster.

Stewart makes no judgments as to whether any impropriety occurred in any business dealings, so this is a good place to start for an objective reader who wants to make up his own mind about the whole sordid mess.
