Rechsstaat, Geist, and governance
The reputation of Hegel has been so besmirched in the minds of many by the perils of statism gone awry that it is remarkable to see a book actually rescue him from charges of these evils, and others, and actually make some sense of his political philosophy. I think, however, that getting Hegel right is one thing in theory, and another in practice, and the chaotification of this seven course Hegelian dinner in its Marxist version has been tragic. We cannot simply say that all these people got Hegel wrong and issue a new 'the real Hegel', for such things rarely get second chances. But it behooves any Marxist to consider the scrambled version of this going on unconsciously, in some Feuerbachian pidgin translation. Brought out into the light, the full scope of Hegel's view are eloquent, rich, and powerful, as this book illustrates very easily. That does not mean one should agree. But if anything this formal challenge to the natural rights tradition can illuminate the limits of the mechanized political liberalism of the first stage of the modernist social revolution. After this exceptionally clear, and reasonably short, survey of all the issues, one realizes that the problem was not really Hegel, but the inexorably arising misinterpretations of his decidedly difficult works.
One should note that such a clear exposition as this can actually make one think this is an easy subject and Hegel's views here are the object of many controversies and has many critics, consider Isaiah Berlin's Freedom and Its Betrayal, or Tucker's Philosophy and Myth in Karl Marx.
One might also be sure to start at square one and consider the views Hegel reacts against, among them Kant's, cf. Patrick O'Reilly's Kant's Political Philosophy.

One of the best UNIX books ever written.
This is one of the best UNIX books ever written. Period. It's too bad that New Riders never bothered to update it, as it is kind of dated nowadays. It is still very useful, and not a waste by any means, but an update would be nice. It hits on every major aspect of UNIX and has examples. I have found things in there that I didn't find even in the Nemeth books. This belongs on every UNIX Sysadmin's bookshelf. The next time I ask for some Unix and tech books at work, I will see if this or other used copies are still available and try to get them to buy it. I don't want to take mine to work because I don't want to damage it, and because it is just too big and bulky to carry back and forth.

Oh, and you have to love that cover art.....

A must have
It is difficult to know where to begin. This book is a must have for any archaeologist who works in the Great Basin. However, It would be of benefit to anyone who works in North America. Beck put together a splendid volume that includes articles by many of the movers and shakers in Basin archaeology. The title describes the contents of the book, with a review of important archaeological questions and models that Basinists were dealing with in the past and how that leads up to what we are doing now. My copy is already well worn.

George Stevens' Color Photography
During World War II, George Stevens, the famed film editor who is known for such films as "Giant" and "The Greatest Story Ever Told," and many, many, others, was a Lieutenant Colonel in charge of film coverage of American troops in battle.

Because the Technicolor Process was too complicated and the cameras too cumbersome at that time, all news films of the war were in black and white. Kodak, however had a color process made for home moving pictures that had the advantages of being simple and of high quality. There was a major disadvantage however; this process yielded a single copy and no negative. For his own record, George Stevens used this color process, in conjunction with the official black and white newsreels, to photograph the period from D-Day to the end of the war.

These color films remained, untouched and unviewed, in tins in his storage room until being discovered by his son, George Stevens Jr., some forty years after the end of the war. Luckily, the tins were air tight and the film had not deteriorated.

About 200 pictures were made from Stevens' film and used for this book. Max Hastings, a war correspondent for BBC and The London Standard, has provided the narrative that accompanies the photography. Together, Hastings' words and Stevens' photography, combine to present an outstanding portrayal of the period from D-Day to the end of the war.

I have visited the concentration camp at Dachau. Today it is a museum dedicated to the horrors that once took place there. In no way, however, can a museum adequately portray those horrors. Stevens' picture, on page 165, of a stack of emaciated corpses that the Nazi's had been unable to cremate before the Allies liberated Dachau, portrays that horror better than any sterile museum could hope to do.

From the beaches of Normandy to French cities that are little more than heaps of rubble, to defeated Germans looking through coils of barbed wire, to Generals in unsoiled uniforms, to battle scenes, to the triumphant parade up the Champs Elysees after the recapture of Paris, and to the signing of the German surrender, Stevens and his camera were there.

Hastings, in words, tells us of dismal failures and triumphant victories, of brilliant tactics and horrible blunders. He brings the war back to life in a style that never bores and always intrigues.

This is a readable, beautifully photographed history of the final months of WW II. By reading and viewing it, one will experience both the heroism of battle and the horror of war. If I didn't already own one, I'd go looking for a copy.
