I really do not belong to the analytical school of philosophy, being more into what is known as continental philosophy. Still, I have to highly reccomend this book for both theists and atheists alike. For theists, it will help strengthen some of your beliefs, while force you to think about other beliefs you hold. For atheists, it will do something similar, though it will obviously challenge more than it affirms. The greatest strength of this book, however, is that the articles are not all easy, nor are they all so difficult that only a person who's a master of esosteric terminology can grasp it. The essays range from easy (such as Advice to Christian Philosophers, as well as his treatment on the problem of evil) all the way to very challenging (his essay on Ockhams way out is one of the most challenging things I've read to date). In summary, Plantinga is one of the leading Christian thinkers today, and it would benefit everyone to read some of his writings, if for nothing else than to get a different (Christian) point of view.

This is a collection of Plantinga's writings on some of the big issues concerning Christianity, suffering and a just God, free will, rationality of belief in God. I've usally been disappointed by 'philosophical' discussions about God, we've all heard the watchmaker argument, but if you find that lacking in substance pick up a copy of Plantinga's writings, its an entirely different plane of thought. I will warn you, this is not light reading, you may have to put some effort into this.

My husband and I raised 3 black daughters in a very white suburb. My youngest is now 20 and a junior in college. This book helped me so much in dealing with racial issues such as hair types and dating. My middle daughter actually did a social work internship at the Yale Univ. Child Study Center and met Dr. Comer. She definitely wanted to take my copy of the book. I told her "No" but I am giving her "Raising Black Children", Drs. Comer & Poussaint's newest book for Christmas. I highly recommend this book.

Excellent, but not easy... Sennett succeeds in convincingly showing that Plantinga's ontological arguement fail, as well as his arguement for reformed epistemology and proper function. However Sennett shows that Plantinga's contribution to the problem of evil is valid.
Plantinga wrote an afterword on the cover, and seems to agree with Sennett.

An excellent book, valuable for anyone interested in philosophy of religion and who has an academic level.

Peter Pan is a good adventure/fantasy that kids and adults can enjoy alike. With much exaggeration, it is something kids can enjoy and read into. It's a page-turning book that once you started you can't stop.

This isn't like the Disney movie! I loved this book but at the same time I was shocked by the violence of the fighting between Hook and the Lost Boys and the Indians. I don't think I'll be reading this one to my nephews and neices, not until I have edited out the violent bits. It wasn't that In-Your-Face violence of the Hollywood movies, it was more insinuated and there was definetly a menacing atmosphere surrounding Wendy's, Peter's and Michael's adventures in Never Never Land. I do recommend it though, just not for easily frightened youngsters. This is definetly in need of a PG rating on the cover. PARENTS: This is no Disney Peter Pan!

My 10 year old daughter found this book in the school library. She read it one weekend and has checked it out several times. The classic story along with the beautiful illustrations by Eric Kincaid have made this one of her favorite books. When I surprised her with her own copy that I had found on Amazon she was thrilled and commented on it's excellent condition.

This book documents what was quite possibly the largest and finest exhibition ever devoted solely to fauve painting. This brief movement, sandwiched between the towering achievements of impressionism, post-impressionism, and cubism, is a relatively overlooked one in the history of 20th century art. Concentrating on landscape painting as the heart of the fauvist view of reality, the essays are some very fine scholarly re-appraisals of the social and economic history of fauvism. The book itself is beautiful, with a superior design and extremely high standards of photographic reproduction. My only quibble is the near-total exclusion of figure-painting from the discussion (even as a point of comparison), and the authors' focus on social history leaves little space for aesthetic issues to be discussed. The essays treat these fantastically beautiful paintings as mere documents of economic relationships, a common art-historical focus nowadays, but one which does little to educate the reader in the marvelous way of seeing represented by these images.

A lot have time was put into writing this book I can tell by the way it was written. Very good book on a hard period of art to write about.

I don't agree with Plantinga, and I found nothing shocking here. What I found is a desperate attempt to justify the irrationality of Christianity. The essence of Plantinga's entire career up to this book has been "If I'm going down, I'm taking you with me." Well, he doesn't succeed. The criticism in the first part of the book alone is enough to permanently debilitate Plantinga's arguments. So much of the alvinizing in the rest of the book turns on varying interpretations of rationality, semantics & syntax, the proper way to measure probabilities, and the best way to construe evolutionary theory. The result is that metaphysical naturalism emerges just fine. For all the certainty his Christianity no doubt provides him, it's interesting to see that the best Plantinga can do against the other side is a sophist's display of clever tricks and dogmatic assertion worthy of P.T. Barnum.

Naturalists are usually seen as paragons of rationality while theists are thought to be at the edge of crazy. Alvin Plantinga's argument challenged this identification questioning even the possibility of holding to Naturalism and trusting the cognitive faculties. This book begins with challenges to the evolutionary argument against naturalism and ends with a response to the challenges by Alvin Plantinga.

The eleven critical essays here are divided into four sections each one dealing with a separate set of objections to the evolutionary argument against naturalism. The argument itself is briefly presented in the beginning and then re-presented even more briefly by each of 'Beilby's cohorts'. There is some repetition in the book, which is not so bad when you're looking for clarification on the most contentious points under discussion.

The main areas of criticism in the book are from Science (Evolution), Skepticism, Conditional Probabilities/Confirmation Theory and the Nature of Epistemic Defeat.

Prior to reading this book I had thought Plantinga's argument was very strong -- so I was basically looking for objections that I was unaware of and answers to those objections; I found a lot of both. If you already agree with Plantinga you will probably find clarification and strengthening of the argument; if you don't already agree, well, then, I don't know what you'll find maybe shock/horror? Actually, most of the book is critical and provides ammunition for dissenters. But, in the end I think the worst that could be said about the argument is that it was 'bloodied but unbowed' (Plantinga).

I found William Alston's comments very helpful -- they suggest a different way of formulating the argument -- something like a Reductio ad Absurdum I think.

This book is actually a question and answer book. It has FAQ and the answers. I foud that many of the questions were right on time. I think I was expecting more of a narrative type of book, that is why I rated it 3 stars. Because I don't think it answered the most important question. How to raise Black Children.

I first read this book in 1992 when my daughter was 2 years old. I have found it to be a very useful tool in answering many of my questions with regards to the changes that she has gone through and the fears she may face as an eight year old. I also have an eleven year old son, who was having a problem controlling his anger. I referred to the book, and learned how to help my son understand the importance of controlled behavior, and alternative ways to express anger. I have also encouraged my son to read certain chapters in the book, to let him know that he is not alone in what he is feeling. I like the fact that this book deals with real life problems, and offers real solutions. My husband and I are parents who do not believe in spanking our children, it was a joy to read that the authors supported our views on the harms of spanking. I give away copies of this book to friends and famalies who ask me how we have been able to raise two, generous, kind and well behaved kids.

In short, it's too thorough which makes studying this textbook a tough task. You don't know what's important and what's not. Though the general layout of the text is systemetic and unconfusing (definitely you won't find following the author's path difficult), the problem of this books comes from the author's ambition to include a lot in one book and failure to do so by dividing the content into more chapters/sub-chapters. This problem is particularly apparent in the later parts of the book, where different cycles of financial statements are analysed.
This is the comment I also heard among many of my fellows at the university. They all agree this is not a good textbook afterall.

To survive my tough auditing class, I used two different book of which the Loebbecke is truely the better choice. Thorough and understandable. However, the structure of the book is not in a logical order.

The authors did a great job in putting together all the essential elements in a logical order. Some ppl have difficulties in understanding the later part of this book because they don't have hands on experience in auditing. I used this book too when I was doing my undergrad degree in HK, this book was extremely terse to me at that time. But after spending few years in one of the Big 5 I find this book makes perfect sense to me right now. I am currently doing a PhD in accounting in the States, and I decide to buy this book (again) as a reference on my desktop.
