I read this book over 45 years ago while completing my undergraduate studies in Engineering. I have never forgotten it!! The significant substories within the book describe the development of wire rope; the construction of the first successful suspension bridge across the Niagara Gorge; the details of construction of the Brooklyn Bridge; and the comparison of the sway bracing of the Brooklyn Bridge and the Tacoma Narrows Bridge and its ultimate fate. These could all have been the subject of separate books and each was facinating in itself.

This fascinating book descibes the the story of the brooklyn bridge in New York, and the story of their builders, the roebling brothers. Roebling had the great idea of building a bridge not with stiff beams, but with two big soft ropes made of fibers of strong and elastic steel. An idea, which now is used with nearly all Bridges of wide span. I love this book, because it is not an engineering report, but the touching story of the life of mainly the elder Roebling brother, who dedicated his health and his life to this bridge.

I could read this book nearly 40 years ago, and still it is one of my favorites. I do not posess it, and I deeply regret that it is not available any more. Hopefully AMAZON can find some and put them on their stock...

This is definitely a Bible. This book contains a huge abundance of useful information, everything from cleaning products to the foods we eat. Everyone should have one of these in their houshold.

In a world where there are soo many products it is hard to tell which ones are safe. This book, however, manages to take out some of the chore involved in researching product safety. I recommend this book for everyone who makes the purches in the family.

This is an excellent guide to products that we use daily. You can find the safest alternatives and information about what ingredients are harmful. The only drawback is that it does not include ratings on the newest products on the market but you can use the other info about harmful ingredients as a guideline. If you are concerned about product safety this book is a must.

The book NATURE'S ULTIMATE ANTI-CANCER PILL: THE IP6 WITH INOSITOL QUESTION AND ANSWER BOOK by Coles and Steinman offers some questionable advice. For example, it indicates there no known side effects from IP6, when iron-anemia is possible outcome since IP6 is a mineral chelator. Furthermore, the authors claim the product is safe for pregnant women and children. Children have need for minerals and IP6 might stunt their growth. Pregnant females must supply minerals for their growing fetus and use of IP6 may result in serious consequences. Beware of the advice in this book. IP6 is a wonderful antioxidant and mineral chelator and has widespread application for cancer, diabetes, heart disease and as an antibiotic, but it should be used for short periods of time, not as a daily supplement. There is scant evidence that one brand of IP6 is superior to another.

I would have to agree with the previous reviewer - the reader from California. The information given in this book IS thorough and comprehensive, yet there is a constant pushing of what seems to be their brand. The site, iHerb, has not only the author's promoted brand but others as well so readers and shoppers can make educated decisions.

Though I agree with the previous reviewers and consider this a valuable book, I take issue with the stress the authors put on only buying the Enzymatic Therapies brand of IP6. Though they profess to have no financial interest in the company, they are so insistent about this that I find it hard to believe. Normally when reporting on research it will be pointed out exactly what kind of substance was used in the research. But they stress it over and over, and even go so far as to cast blatant aspersions on other marketers of IP6, with the warning that you may get sick from using other brands. I investigated this a bit and here's what I found out: Enzymatic Therapies brought some other companies to court for selling IP6, but the judge threw the case out because the others weren't selling a combination capsule of IP6 and inositol like ET was. The source of the IP6 in ET's formulation is, as near as I can tell, the exact same source as that sold by, for example, Jarrow Labs. What's the difference besides the fact that it's sold separately from the inositol? PRICE! You can buy pure IP6 and pure inositol in bulk online and just mix your own, and pay less than a third the cost of the ET brand! I have no financial interest in this, I only buy it for my wife who had breast cancer (and the rest of the family takes it too!)... One problem with so many touted cancer cures is that usually you find that the promoter has a financial ax to grind. This case looks suspicious despite the authors' disclaimer. Too bad.

This is a useful book, packed with information but written in a somewhat choppy manner. Additionally the unfortunately "cute" chapter headings and overall humorous tone of the book detract somewhat from the importance of the text.

Although this is information is now a few years old, I can only imagine that things haven't changed. This book gives quite a bit of insight on how disgusting corporate drug, chemical, and even cosmetic companies are and the harmful, un-renewable resources they abuse. Not to mention beneficial advice on the importance of organic ingredients and whole foods. This book scared me enough to keep me away from fruits, vegetables, meat, and dairy products that are maintained with pesticides. I am more aware in many ways because of this book, however is does leave me with some unanswered questions.

I learned a great deal reading this book. The authors presented the information in a very easy format to understand and I found myself learning the things I wanted to learn very quickly. Best of all they give great resources to order products and learn more. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about the toxins in our life and how to avoid them.

This book is based on pulp fiction author L. Ron Hubbard's imaginary delusions of physiology. Former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop said it better than I could, when asked about this book.

Question. What about the author's detoxification advice? He credits L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of Scientology with some of the theories he recommends.

Answer. "My recommendation about detoxification is to keep away from it. You don't need it. I'm not sure it does what this book describes. It's dangerous. I don't think L. Be aware that this book was labeled as 'trash' by former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop, and that the Food and Drug Administration issued a paper claiming the author destorts his facts. The book supports and suggests a chain of clinics called 'HealthMed', which are run by Scientologists. Make up your own mind.

I immediately wanted to read this book when I found out through "Toxic Sludge is Good for You" (Stauber and Rampton) that the book was targeted by the agricultural industry because it recommended organic food. As Toxic Sludge says: "Before shoppers can use [this] information, they must first hear about the book...the California Raisin Advisory Board wanted to make sure that Steinman's book was dead on arrival...Diet for a Poisoned Planet is a serious, important contribution to the public debate over health, the environment, and food safety. It fell victim to a PR [Public Relations] campaign designed to prevent it from ever reaching the 'marketplace of ideas'."

I was extremely disappointed after seeing this book thinking it was the the Arthritis Cure, which was written a year earlier. It's not, only a cheap imitation which appears to try and capatilize on the success of the 1997 book. Even the font used on the cover of Doctor's Cure is a blatent copy. Shame on you!
