This is by far Lew Welch's most intelligently written book and it was done as a graduation thesis for Reed College in 1950, when he was stil in his early 20's. This was an important time for Welch. He was still attempting to find his voice and was just then making his first contacts with William Carlos Williams. Later, when Welch became part of the Beat scene, he would look back at his own innocent days at Reed and try to recapture the excitement and importance of his explorations of Stein in his failed novel, I Leo. But this is not the voice of the hard-drinking, semi-messianic Lew that we find crowding out his talent in his later works; this is the voice of a subtle thinker saying (without the smoke and whistles of today's English departments) some important things about Stein. Considering the date, this is an amazing thesis. William Carlos Williams admitted that he had learned some important things from Lew's thesis, and it continues (now in book form competently edited by Eric Paul Shaffer--but please don't hand this perfomance to Shaffer--Lew Welch is clearly the star in this show) to remain of value for students of Stein's work. We only wish he could have continued to have written so lucidly and to have lived on to help us through some of the stranger developments of American criticism and poetry that now appear--unfortunately--to have become the norm.

Shaffer's stunner of an introduction, as well as the insight and organization of this book, made me see poetry in an entirely new light, as well as the brilliance of Lew Welch. Shaffer's work is extraordinary. I can't wait for the upcoming release of Shaffer's own work, PORTABLE PLANET. He is a very real talent!

Any one interested in the deeper mechanics of how our language makes meaning out of sound, and how sound itself is interesting into and unto itself should add this book to their collection. I have profitably reread Eric Paul Shaffer's introduction several times for his analysis of Welch's and Stein's interplay as artists and poets.

Eric Stein's creative combination of satire, sarcasm, mixed metaphors and colloquialisms makes us laugh at ourselves for paying any attention to this lowest of lows in TV entertainment. Lot's of laughs and chuckles; a great party gift.

This was a fascinating,easy read with clearly a lot of research on the author's part regarding the law on workman's comp. You really relate to the people involved and the pages turn easily...waiting to see what happens next.
After working on the employer side of workman's comp, and seeing the advantages taken by employees, this was a real eye opener relating to the other side.
You never imagine what can happen until it happens to you and what a SURPRISE ENDING...this book would make an excellent movie. I can already visualize the stars who would make this an Academy award.
It's a MUST read for the summer and hopefully, look for a future movie. You won't put it down once you start.

This novel is a diamond in the rough. It grabbed my attention from the first page and held it to the last. It tells the story of a workers' compensation lawyer in California who is used to defending his clients--employers and their insurance companies--from what he has come to think of as generally meritless claims by injured workers. Until one day he is forced to confront an explosive situation in a routine hearing gone bad, and finds himself on the short side of the same claims process he has so successfully used to defend his clients. The novel gives the reader an in-depth look at the flaws and corruption of the California workers' comp system, but this is just a backdrop for an excellent tale of intrigue and personal growth. The writing is vivid, clean, and imaginative. The author displays an almost casual fluidity and adroitness with language. Highly recommended.

Michael Eric Stein's Continuous Trauma may become to the California Worker's Compensation System what Upton Sinclair's The Jungle became to the meat packing industry in the early 1900's. Author Stein gives us valuable insight into the workings of the Compensation System with a fictionalized account drawn from actual case histories of the agency. It is obvious that Stein spent years researching this book and worked closely with individuals personally involved in the system. After reading this account, you have to feel compassion and concern for anyone that has to deal with this bureaucracy.

I didn't really know what to expect from a book on this subject, but I was amazed by the insight that the book offers. As someone who has suffered from Trich for 6 years, I found the book to be tremendously useful. A must have for anyone interested in the disorder.

If you have the directX sdk, you don't need this book at all. It pretty much lists the definition of each function without the hyperlinking ability.

I want't known about using MFC in the Direct

Like the title says its a professionals reference. Demonstrates basic 3d conceptes but thats it. Only 6 or so pages of this intro. Make sure you know 3d or preferably direct3d programming before buying this book. Its good for a quick reference to the 400 or so functions but thats it its a reference book. Advance 3d programmers will like it because it has all the possible 3d functions you can use in a program.
