A history lesson cleverly disguised as an Egyptian newspaper
The sudden death of Tutankhamen stuns the nation of Egypt and the question is whether the boy king died of natural causes or whether there was indeed foul play. "Boy King Murdered?" is the banner headline for "The Egyptian News," a creative way of tricking students age 9 and up into learning about Ancient Egypt from 3000 to 1100 B.C. Other exciting stories included "A Soaring Success!" as Zoser's pyramid sets a new tomb trend, "Wrapping It Up!" an in-depth interview with the royal mummy maker, and "Let's Party!" a beginner's guide to fashionable feasting with the chariot set. You will find all the traditional forms of journalism, from news stories and interviews to editorials and advice columns, all of which provide young readers with information about the history of ancient Egypt. Chief Scribe Scott Steedman also includes dozens of ads for Egyptians who need to have a boat built, buy a new wig or new Senet set, or want a job as a district governor or lady's maid. Other volumes in the History News series include editions on the Romans, Greeks, Vikings and Aztecs, as well as news of the Stone Age, Medicine and Explorers. Of course, once students see how creatively "The Egyptian News" has been put together, they will probably want to undertake a project like this for some other period of history. The combination of information and creativity is certainly irresistible.

creative way to present history
This book presented some events from Egypt's history in the form of newspaper articles. It was a very creative way to give children an introduction to Egyptian history. It presented lots of interesting informationa, and also some neat pictures. This book is good at sparking a greater interest in history in children while entertaining them at the same time.

This book captured my child's attention
As a homeschooling mom, I highly value books that inform my child about historical facts, while captivating them with exciting stories. I highly recommend this book as a supplement to any Egyptian studies. Written in "newspaper format", it is a joy to read aloud to my children. Using imaginative headlines and wonderful illustrations and photos, this book has definitely captured my child's attention. The plethora of historical facts presented are accurate and entertaining. I would recommend this book for children between the ages of 5-12.

Inside you will find a map of the Aztec empire, articles detailing every day life of the Aztec from agriculture, the Spanish invasion, war, the ball game, a guide to the ancient city of Tenochtitlan, a girl talk section, food and classifieds that provide an insight to the culture. A clever and delightful way to introduce history to youngsters.

Castles
"Castles" by Philip Steele, published by Kingfisher, is a wonderful glance into medieval life. Although written for children, this book will appeal to adults as well. "Castles" can provide a special reading time between parent and child. The historical information is presented in a colorful, easy reading format accompanied by beautiful illustrations and well-researched descriptions. Timelines, photographs, and artwork allow the reader to learn many aspects in an entertaining manner. "Castles" encompasses the social system, heraldry, knighthood, and lifestyles of the time period. This book provides a detailed glimpse into the past. Originally, I purchased this book for my nephew, but I will be acquiring a copy in the future for myself and my children. To anyone who wants to encourage their child to learn about this time frame in history, this book is perfect. By the way, I think this book will be a good time for a parent to spend reading with their child.

Clothes & Crafts - in Victorian Times

Victorian Clothes and Crafts
"Victorian rooms were cluttered with objects, some handcrafted and others manufactured. There were ornaments and potted plants, such as aspidistras, and stuffed animals and birds in glass cases."

The Victorian Age was named for Queen Victoria who ruled Britain and Ireland from 1837 to 1901. During this time period, industry changed much of the traditional life in Britain. Machines replaced the human hand in crafts and people soon realized that mass production did not give the quality of the earlier handmade goods.

In this book you can learn about:

Victorian Crafts
Clothes and Fashion
Festivals and Holidays

Shows pictures of old sewing machines, details of tapestry, dollhouses, decorated books, Paris fashions and paintings.

You can also learn to make Victorian valentine's cards, Victorian silhouettes, decoupage and puppets.

There is also a glossary and a list of further reading.

An excellent world Atlas.
As with most atlases, this book divides the world into various regions, some as small as countries (e.g. Western Africa, Oceania, France, etc.) The book has many colorful topographical maps as well as pictures of important locations, animals, activities and/or native dress. Interestingly, each one contains a picture of a native dish. At the end of the book is a chart of facts and figures, organized by continent, which includes the following information: country, area, population, capital, official language, currency, and major products.

I bought this atlas for my children sight unseen, and do not regret it in the least. My small children (6 and 8) like it, and the depth of information it contains is sure to make the book useful for years to come. I recommend it absolutely.

Knights-A Great and Beautiful Book
This book is the best! I have never given five stars to a book before, but wish I could rate this one at ten stars. Knights is a gorgeous book chock full of interesting data about knights from all over the world and their weaponry, coat of arms, armor, and the age of chivalry over a thousand year span, as well as bits about what life was like for common folk, in an easy to read and reference format. The back of the book details real (past) knights and fictitious knights from well know stories by name. A glossary is also included. This is one book, even if you're not into the subject, you will love. STRONGLY RECOMMENDED.

Intro to Chinese Culture
This book is great to teach children in short form different aspects of Chinese Culture. The many craft projects are written so a schoolage child could do them with little help from an adult. This is a good teacher present. Any parent like myself with a daughter from China needs it in their library.
