Power Strokes is a cleverly drafted satire of Tabloid celebrities, with an eye to expanding our awareness of the thin line between reality and the absurd. St. George targets the right people, and romps fearlessly where others may fear to tread. Five Stars all the way!

Edward Hays has once again marveled us with his modern day parables to challenge man's soul. Every story has you pondering, trying to apply the message you've learned to your own "hermitage".

An excellent book for anyone who has been in the military as a parachute jumper. It was a personal choice for me as I was a Parachute Jumping Instructor at some of the places mentioned in this book. It covers a lot of useful information in regard to the training of British Paratroopers by personell of the Royal Air Force. The people who completed their jumping course during the war years or the years after when the Parachute School was still part of the Royal Air Force will enjoy re-living their experiences of the training and will recognize the names of many of the Instructors involved at the time. They will also live through the moments when they went in to action and immediately find some of the names of the Army personell will bring back some very good and also some very sad memories.

So the fat kid drops her flute when the guy passes the school bus, with the STOP arm extended and red lights flashing and the governor's sister isn't going to be happy so maybe the governor won't be and Web Allen's gotten over his heat rash from being in the bloody wet but who really owns the pig ...life can get pretty complicated. Nobody gets spared a lot of sympathy, but Eddie Devlin gets a wife, a new ranch house, a new used car, a new suit, and we're following him into the shank of the 50's. A lot of the characters from the first two books are back; did they ever leave? This is like eating apple pie, but there's something in the recipe, maybe a whole lot of cinnamon, that makes it sharp ... start with Old Tim's Estate and read up, it's the only way any of this can make real sense ... definitely worth the trip. I'd like to see more of the cartoons.

The Rule of St. Benedict: A Guide to Christian Living
Published in Paperback by International Specialized Book Services (1994)
Amazon base price: $30.00
Average review score:

This book is wonderful! I have read it and think it is highly pastoral, a synthesis of conferences by Abbot Holzherr to his community, yet a fresh look at the Rule. He combines insight with scholarly outlook and sees the Rule as a sure guide for modern living. Also, it can be used as a scholarly source with notes and bibliography which are pretty inculsive of what's out there right now. Highly recommended!

Sixty Minutes for St George

Mr. Fullerton takes the reader from the pitching decks of the Royal Navy ships during WWI to the bloody raid on Zeebrugge in 1918, on St. George's Day. His research is flawless and his characters are most entertaining, as is the gripping action and plot. Outstanding action scenes and the violent German resistance makes one appreciate what was done by the British during this heroic action. Check it out.

George Tavard in 'The Spiritual Way of St. Jeanne d'Arc' describes Joan's dedication to spiritual virginity as 'one cannot clean one's conscience too much.' Even though she also included sexual continence, the spiritual virginity is an example for all to follow if we want to love and serve God and our fellow man. It is a constant looking at our life in order to see what we must change. The core of this is her reliance on God at all times. It is an example for all of us who at times in our life feel hopeless when we rely on our limitations. Many of the lives of the Saints are written devoid of any anger or human faults. This book shows Joan's humanness and anger, sometimes bordering on sarcasm, to questions that were misleading and deceitful. It also show's how she integrated her interior life of contemplation with God into her active life of leadership for the liberation of France. Joan of Arc is a timeless model for all men and women to follow. I highly recommend this book as a companion to 'Joan of Arc, Her Story' by Regine Pernoud and Marie-Veronique Clin. Art Dugan

This book is a delicious treat for fans of British police procedurals. And if you're a golfer, you're in for a bonus. Chief Inspector Byram St. George won't be chasing any killers on foot (bad leg and too much weight). His forte is sound detective work. (Think of Holmes in the body of Sebastion Cabot.) And before the crime is solved, golf fans are taken for a divot-by-divot tour of the courses at St. Andrews that will have them clutching the volume with an over-lapping grip. I highly recommend this book.

St George Tucker's " View of the Constitution of the United States" is a great contribution to political science. Tucker presents a view of the US Constitution from a Jeffersonian point of view. He correctly shows the limited nature of the federal government, and explores the powers delegated to it. Tucker also
shows how the powers not delegated are reserved to the states and the people. He also reiterates the sovereignty of the people through the states and rejects an all powerful federal government. He rejects the Federalist view that the Constitution created an organic nation consolidated into one government. A must read for a person who believes in freedom.
