A brilliant chronicle of an astonishing exhibition!
"Picasso and the War Years" surveys his art during his years of isolation in Occupied Paris, as well as the three years leading up to the cataclysm. Although several exhibitions have been held on this same subject in Europe, this is the first such survey of Picasso's wartime production to take place in the United States. A series of outstanding essays by several prominent critics explore the complex political, social, and personal circumstances which inspired these still-challenging paintings, and the initial reactions to them. A warning: this book is not for everyone. If you are disturbed by violent and harsh art, forget it. These images still retain their power to shock, disorient, disgust and sadden, even if sixty years have gone by since their creation. Yet all the pictures possess a deep geometric structure, formal balance, and intense affect which engraves them on the viewer's mind. The sorrowful, neurotic, and unforgettable face of Dora Maar, Picasso's mistress and model during these tragic years, is transformed in these paintings into a symbol of a world gone mad. This is definitely one of the most significant art books produced this year.

A Literary Masterpiece
This is one of the most thought provoking books I have ever read. Bonevac's prose are masterful...you literally hang on every word. He somehow translates intellectually difficult topics into practical, easy to understand examples. This book is a bargain at any price. I am a changed man for reading it...Thank you Dr. Bonevac! I have already ordered some of your other works and eagerly look forward to reading them with the same intellectual vigor. Viva Bonevac!

Uncommon sense
A very readable book whose treasure is the ancient but timeless wisdom of King Solomon. If a jerk is always giving you advice, should you listen? Is fear of God a good thing? You have been treated unfairly and are angry, what should you do? This book applies biblical principles to answer these and many other questions relevant in today's world.

This was the first book I have read by Robert Jeffress. I am now looking forward to reading some of his other books.

The joy of discovery
I wonder how many art collectors and even scholars have had the pleasure of encountering the work of Vilhelm Hammershoi.......This Danish painter (1864 - 1916) discovered his own form of impressionism and figure painting out of the main stream of world renowned painters. Yes, people who know Scandanavian art surely are familiar with this master, but how can the rest of us be conversant about the likes of Edvard Munch and not have had the introduction to this master painter? This wondrous volume fills a gap for all of us. Hammershoi has been compared to Vermeer for his uncanny sense of light, shadow, and composition. Just browse through the pages of this stately volume and drink in the atmosphere of the dark interiors and architectural renderings of Denmark's buildings and towns and bridges. His figures often face away from us as though the nearby window or other sensitive light source were more significant than their face. His palette is limited to umber/sienna/brown,black/white with only the ocassional use of warmer tones. But how these paintings illumine us! Hammershoi is in that rare class of painter with Antonio Lopez Garcia - two men who reveal our world to us as though we had never seen it. An utterly elegant and quiet monograph. Highly recommended.

Stimulating
The Wisdom of Solomon at Work was an easy, enjoyable read that stimulated the mind with ancient Biblical stories and applied those stories to rea-life management issues in business.

One of the most interesting components of this book is that all of the authors come from different religious backgrounds (Protestant, Catholic and Jewish). All three united in telling some of the wonderful Old Testament stories of Ruth, Job, Moses, David and Solomon and gave examples of witnesses that used these teachings to improve a workplace.

I thought the book was insightful for those Christians who search for methods to apply their faith in their workplace. Whether you are a Christian or an atheist, this book provides wonderful illustrations of how to become a better manager.

Give it a try and enjoy learning about our God and principles in management.

Philosophy to Go
Authors Solomon and Higgins have written a very readable history of philosophy matching philosopher's names with a brief explanation of their pet concepts. They cover too much ground really; by the time I finished the book, I had been exposed to so many ideas and philosophers that I remembered hardly any of them. They should have just covered the major philosophers of one period in depth if they expected many readers to remember anything. But this is a good reference book; I wrote some philosophers down and maybe I may read a couple of their primary works over a lifetime. This is also a good book for the intellectually lazy but mildly curious people who want to be exposed to philosophy without having to go through the pain of reading the profound primary sources. Higgins and Solomon have already done that for you; they have allegedly read these philosophers' books and have reported back with bit-sized morsels of information about their different philosophies. Some of the philosophies seem important, others might leave you wondering why anyone would waste a lifetime worrying about such a subject.

Many different kinds of philosphers are covered whether they be boring, charismatic, bolshevik, dangerous, obfuscating, bloodless, blasphemous, godly, mathematical, humanistic, elitest, egalitarian, arrogant, irritable, humble, obscure, famous, rich, poor, establishment, anti-establishment, heretical, dogmatic, flexible, incomprehensible, annoying, pleasant, hypocritical, scientific, kooky, or intellectually dishonest. I don't really have time to explain all of them in depth.

For the ¿Wide-Eyed in Wonder¿ type
I could have chosen Bertrand Russell or Will Durant's books on the same topic, but I went with the Solomon and Higgins combo instead. They purposely write for the novice and include often-ignored philosophical traditions in the East and elsewhere. Unlike most accounts, the book is quick read at 300 pages. The curious reader will find it a thorough introduction to the "wonder" of philosophy.

Informative-Easy To Read-Worth Every Penny
For years I have gone about reading philosophy in a very haphazard fashion. Nietzche here, Plato there, Baudrillard here, you get the point. A Short History of Philosophy has helped me understand not only what the great (and minor) philosophers have said but in what conditions they lived. For those of you who have started as I, I can assure you that the puzzle makes much more sense when you start from the beginning. For a "Short History" this book packs an immense ammount of information. The text is very accessible, though I do recommend that you have a Dictionary of Philosophy to accompany your reading. If you have any interest in Philosophy please do yourself a favor and read this book. Solomon and Higgins have created a book worthy of its praise.

A Puritan Warrior in strange African lands...
This a collection of all Robert E. Howard's writings using the character Soloman Kane, a Puritan warrior who is driven by conflicting urges of vengeance and chivalry amidst supernatural foes. Most tales take place in Africa, where allied with a mysterious ju-ju man he has strange adventures, battling ancient races and ancient evils in his quest to deal out justice.

These stories are very good on the whole. There area few poor tales by Howard's standards, and the one with a vampiric queen is a big let-down considering its potential. But there are a few classics - such as 'Wings in the Night', a superbly-drawn story with excellent characterisation and narrative action. The personage of Soloman Kane is very interesting and truly three-dimensional. Just a shame that Robert E. Howard didn't get to use him more often in his writings.

solemn kane
howard's descriptions of the puritan with a sword and a pistol, makes Solomon Kane his most interesting creation. the concept in these stories are great too, and varying. some include magic, there are pirats and vampires. as always howard is unmatched in his combat descriptions. true greatness. one sad thing, though: the "completion" of some stories by Ramsey Campbell. awful. the guy hasn't got a clue. Solomon Kane sudenly tolerates corruption, one story has an incredibly stupid ending. Campbell was definitely the wrong choice. make up for it, get someone else.

A brilliant writer
I've only recently become aquainted with the works of Robert E. Howard and have been greatly impressed with his writing abilities. The stories of Solomon Kane compiled in this paperback offer an excellent view into Howard's extraordinary ability as a storyteller. His description of a drifting Puritan on a personal mission to rid the world of all the evil that he encounters in his travels are magnificently portrayed. His fantastic method of using the language of the time in such a way that is easy to understand for the contemporary reader leave this (and other) novel very entertaining. At many different points during the course of my reading, I was fascinated by the situations that Solomon Kane would become embroiled in and was delighted by the vivid imagination that Howard obviously possessed to describe the resolution of each circumstance. My personal recommendation for this book is for all people who enjoy fiction regardless of the genre they may personally choose. This writer was excellent! His stories should be encouraged to all who can truly appreciate a master at his craft.

worth it for greed essay alone
Most of this book isn't terribly compelling: I think in their (admirable) quests to avoid religiosity, the authors' ideas tend to be pretty thin. But James Ogilvy's essay on greed is really worth reading: a thoughtful way of approaching the place of desire in our lives, which acknowledges that the outer boundaries of desire head into greed.

"You never know what is enough unless you know what is more than enough", sez Wm. Blake, and that might be a good overview of the point of the essay....

Makes You Think...
The authors of those passages made me think deeper into the so-called-sins and about the most-probable history that sins were not bad in God's eyes. But merely man-made ideas planted into history to make themselves feel more powerful. I highly recommend this book to anyone. Give it a try.

Wicked Pleasures turned my notions of vice/versa.
I am enjoying some of the seven deadly sins more but questioning what I once thought of as my virtues. Thanks, Robert Solomon, I needed that.

a Rosenblum fan
Robert Rosenblum is a true scholar in the world of art history. Throughout my undergraduate years, I had looked to his writings for guidance and to gain an understanding of the subject matter. While 1900, Art At The Crossroads is enjoyable and the color plates are stunning, it should be noted that it is companion piece to an exhibition and not a book for academic research. Overall, it is a fine book.

Superb Book!
This book balances the often overpraised work of the impressionists with the reality of the Salon artists (academics) at that time and the rumblings of modernism to come. As a painter, this title is a real treat... it's always been so hard to find examples from this era, that have not been washed away from post 1920's revisionist art history. Accurately reconstructing the exhibits of that era and showing what was on the fringes speaks for itself.

Learn to be a great account executive in less than an hour.
After fifteen years as an executive in the advertising business, I'm still stymied every time I try to explain what it takes to be a great account executive. Thankfully, Robert Solomon has done it for me. This book does a terrific job of boiling down a very complicated and multi-faceted job into a few short chapters. In less than an hour, you'll learn everything you need to know to become an effective account manager. From developing strong strategies to building lasting relationships with clients to conducting yourself properly in meetings, this book has it all. Definitely required reading for anyone interested in entering (or staying) in the advertising business.

Finally, a book that tackles the unspoken.
For years I've been looking for a book to give to assistant account executives when they walk in the agency door that provides the basic tenets of great account management. Finally it's here--and in a 100% tangible, useful, relevant format. This book may not be dense, but in less than an hour, you'll be equipped with good advice on everything account management. Topics range from the basic prescriptions for great account work, to building strong, lasting relationships with clients and agency counterparts, developing a solid strategy briefs and running effective meetings. If you're new to the business, it's a must-read. If you've been in it for years, it never hurts to be reminded of what separates the great from the good.

Not Just for Account People!
This book is a wonderful resource that gets right to the point and provides important information. I wish that every business coaching book was this enjoyable to read -- I read it in one sitting!  Although this book is written for the "Account Person," I think that it applies to anyone who has client contact, runs a meeting, or makes presentations.  I am a "Media Person," and I picked up some great pointers on relationship-building.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who works at an agency.
