The Long Slide

Authors: Ray Smith and Raymond Kenneth Smith
Amazon base price: $1.79

Amazing illustrations and vivid colors.
One of a handful of childrens books I remember from my early years. I still remember when the three adventures spend the night atop the slide and cook what appear to be baked beans over a camp stove. A bizarre adventure only these three stuffed animals could undertake. Remember when Dolly gets sick and pukes off the ladder? It always looked like candy to me. Authors of childrens books have the power to shape minds. Every illustrated book I see I always compare to The Long slide. Long rainy days wishing for summer, my mom not letting me go outside until my hair was dry. This is what this book reminds me of.

Gripping read!
As one not normally interested in the works of Jane Austen (I can hear the mob howling already), it took quite a lot of self-persuasion to open Ray Smith's book, 'The man Who Loved Jane Austen'. Of course I had become the owner of the book not by choice, but through the kindness of a very good friend. Despite my initial doubts, I very soon found myself being happily pulled along by a gripping story of greed and deception played out by the Hatchers. An old Montreal family of upper class, narrow-minded bigots, whose power and poison is aimed at Frank, the recently widowed son-in-law, father of their two grandchildren and the main protagonist.

From the beginning one can only feel frustrated with this honest, reliable, plodding, university lecturer, who clearly loved his wife and dotes on his children and who remains for much of the time frustratingly oblivious to the evil plotting and planning unfolding around him.
The story weaves its way through the stages of this tale of treachery, only occasionally bursting through the straight jacket of misguided principles and petite nationalism of the Hatchers and their cronies, to give the reader the odd
flicker of hope in this otherwise grey tale. Ray Smith describes beautifully the vacation Frank and the children made to Nova Scotia. A very evocative piece, reminding me of my own trips to the Scottish Highlands and of how I can easily remember the feeling of the pure air in your face and the decency of the people in the safety of their
remoteness. But then Frank had Aunt Al living there. A Nova Scotian lady of quite a different stamp altogether.

For someone who opened the pages of this book rather more under duress that desire, I can vouch for a really excellent, 'can't put the book down' read. For those who already enjoy the ubiquitous Jane Austen, this must be a very satisfying alternative.

Darned peculiar but hilarious
A peculiar tale of a fictional European town and its celebrated, bizarre, yet completely ungifted composer. It is howl-out-loud funny. Why doesn't anybody know who this writer is? (It's Ray Smith, incidently, not just Smith)

One of my all-time favorite books. Okay, I'm weird. But if you like PDQ Bach you should LOVE this book.

This collection from Bottom Dog Press is excellent for anyone who's been looking for a good college-text to get students talking about literature and work. science encounters religion
This is a superb and forceful presentation of the various reasons why the atheism and materialism that emerged with the scientific spirit is so completely inadequate for describing the fullness of human flourishing...including our moral judgments, our aesthetic experiences, our religious perceptions, and even for our scientific pursuits! This book suggests a new and coherent worldview wherein theologians and scientists are no longer suspicious enemies of one another, but fellow contributors to a more integrated understanding of human existence. Moreover, the book's portrait of a God without miracles, while not for everyone, is presented persuasively, so that even a detractor must appreciate the relevancy, adequacy, and coherence of this more liberal religious perspective. Finally, anyone interested in the philosophy of Whitehead will find that this book is not only a glorious and thorough introduction to process philosophy, but that it contributes significantly to the resolution of some of the mysteries and inconsistencies of Whitehead's own thought and that of his interpreters. This is Griffin at his best!

A complete guide for beginner and pro alike.
After 6 years of telemarketing very successfully, I felt I was ready to write my own book - until this one came along! If I was going to write a telemarketing book, I wouldn't have come close to the beauty of this book. Everything is covered here. There are sections relating to script writing, using the proper words, setting up a productive workspace, getting out of a slump and increasing the business you have from your existing customers. The philosophy advocated in this book is decidedly different from the way most telemarketers have been taught to sell. What worked 10 years ago doesn't work today. This book will update you so you can sell - honestly - in the 90's. You will find many different money making tips in this book. It will pay for itself your first day on the phone. Go for it!

Excellent for Teleselling Professionals
This book covered the entire sales process from preparing for the call, voice and stress exercises to selling tactics, objection handling and follow-up procedures for repeat business. The book was well written in a logical format and followed logical thinking in regard to how you would go about organizing your day. It also demonstrated the best approach to sales and how I want to be treated as a customer. Original sources of information were very well referenced. It's nice to see more of a trend of relationship building and getting away from the stereotypical "used car salesman" hard line approach to sales. The book was a relatively quick read (about 15 hours). The one thing I did not like about the book, was the last 4 chapters. It sounded like the dreaded "info-mercial" you see on late-night TV or the latest get-rich-quick MLM scheme you get with your home junk mail. Unfortunately, for me, it burst my bubble on the professionalism of the authors. They could have left that out and left the reader on a high note. All in all, I was impressed with the quality and accuracy of the writing.

Guerrilla Selling tactics help you win the TeleSelling war.
The first book to apply guerrilla sales and marketing tactics to the unique, high-preseure environment of electronic communication, this groundbreaking resource is packed with valuable tips, expert advice, and insider secrets on finding, closing and increasing sales by phone, and fax as well as via e-mail and the Internet.
