excellent guidebook
i've travelled a lot, and i've usually just picked out the lonely planet book on wherever i'm going almost by habit. but i was getting sick of how dull they are, so i decided to try a different one for this trip. this seemed like the most interesting among the competition.

i like dhow the author took the time to explain so much about the history and ecology of the country. in two and a half months i only found a few places where the travel details weren't accurate, which is pretty good for these books. but it was all the rest that made the difference. it was great to actually learn something from a guidebook for once. the stuff about the galapagos especially gave a much better sense of the islands (DONT miss them if you go) then just listing the plants and animals.

i used this book for ecuador and another one for peru right afterwards, and there was no comparison. so i knew where all the hotels were in peru and how much everything cost (at least when that author was there). but in ecuador i read about local legends and famous people, which may not seem that important when you're looking for a hotel at midnight, but trust me it can make a big difference in your experience.

plus i liked how much there way about outdoor activities like surfing, rafting, hikingand mountain climbing, since i did all of them while i was there.

great book!

The best Ecuador guide going
Informative, entertaining, obsessively comprehensive--you have to love a guidebook that quotes Kurt Vonnegut and describes Galapagos penguins as looking "as out of place as eskimos at a beach party." Makes you realize how dull most other travel guides are. And all the travel details are dead-on, too. My wife and hiked around Cotopaxi volcano, rafted in the Amazon, and went birdwatching along the coast, and in all cases the information was accurate and complete.

The downward spiral of WROX
WROX books used to be the only ones I'd buy; after having a grand ol' time with the ASP and ASP Databases series. The Professional series has been a real disappointment (and waste of money!). The books tend to be more wordy than necessary and spend too much time on the obvious and too little on the abstract. Cold Fusion is a fairly straight-forward programming language. WROX has somehow managed to make it much more. Perhaps too many cooks in the kitchen; looks like they had 18 authors put this beast together.
Look elsewhere...

A must have for all CF'ers...
Being a ColdFusion user group president, I give this book my seal of approval. This book is well written with easy to understand examples. It will help someone with no CF knowledge all the way to the experts. This book is well laid out and is enjoyable to read. I didn't know what to expect from Wrox on this. I have been a huge Ben Forta fan but this book is just as good as his (if not better)! If you want to learn CF, or just want to get better, buy this book. You will be very happy with it.

Very good book
This is a very good book!
Vale a pena galera!

A solid intro, but some editorial and content problems
Zany's NYC Apartment Guide 2000 gives readers a solid grounding in how and where to find an apartment in The City. While the information is in general good and appears accurate, given the time constraints the authors no doubt faced, Zany's suffers from some editorial and content problems.

The beginning section of the book contains brief background information on such general topics as Brokers & Fees, Doormen, Loft Living, and Roommates. While these short explanations are helpful, the writing appears rushed, and does not go into enough detail in most cases.

The intro sections are also not well integrated with the bulk of Zany's, namely its profiles of NYC neighborhoods (emphasis on Manhattan). Each neighborhood profile contains a brief history, rental information, demographic statistics, and so forth. These profiles are quite useful, but lack sufficient differentiation, especially in the "Final Words" section, which makes every Manhattan neighborhood sound prohibitively expensive and not quite what one is looking for.

Everyone already knows that NYC costs a lot and has quirky neighborhoods, but Zany's needs to do a better job than just repeating the obvious. Still, this guide is a helpful reference for NYC apartment hunters.

Good place to start
This is a great place to start your New York apartment search -- especially if you're new to the area and don't know much about the neighborhoods. But be careful, because some of the statistics are inaccurate or outdated. For example, if you can find a 2-bedroom apartment in Astoria, Queens, for anywhere near $875 per month (the average price, according to the guide), you are a far better apartment hunter than I. Also, there are several popular neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Queens that Zany's leaves out entirely.

Excellent - A Must Have Book
This book was instrumental in helping us find a beautiful sublet for the summer. The sections of the book that were of particular interest to my family were the descriptions of how children would fit into the neighborhoods including places to play, parks, and statistics.

This book is inadequte
I feel that this book is inadequte for students and professionals alike. It does not explain well how systems act in real life situations, like most academia books

Good for students yet too general for professionals
I work in the chemical operations sector. I will highly recommend this book for 3rd or 4rth year future chemical engineers. It contains viable information on many units that they will just have to know about. However, I will not recommend it for working operation engineers. It is too general for us, it doesn't problem shoot units such as pumps and compressors. I don't think that I have much use for this book, specially that I own the Perry's Handbook.

fluid mechanics ,transprtation of fluids
it is the best books i have ever read in my semester ofchemical engineering. the topic i like the most, is transportation offluids .this book is recommended by my professor. the matter of turbulent flow and laminar flow is just fantastic.

thank you!

Shout at the Devil (Macmillan UK Audio Books)

Well wasn't this a disappointment!!!!!!
I've only read a couple of Wilbur A Smith's book, but have enjoyed them. I realize he will use violence and heartbreak to help the story to fit within the historical period and regional area he's writing about. However this book went way over the top. I could only imagine he must have been in a lousy mood when he wrote the ending.

The book starts off quite well introducing us to the characters. Although one of the main characters, O'Flynn, has your typical "Smith" qualities, he is also rather a cad. Brave for one instace cowardly in another. Always looking out only himself no matter who it hurts whether it's his daughter, his partner Sebastian, or his faithful companion Mohammed. The adventure in the book is exciting and does keep you on the edge of your seat. Part II is about rage and revenge, with each character tetering on madness. The pace continues to build to an explosive climax.

Sounds I liked the book, right? Well I did until the end. There is no satisfaction here. Yes I know Smith tends to kill off a hero or two, however usually the book ends with a somewhat happy, or at least normal, ending. Not here. Quite simply: EVERYBODY DIES. The good, the bad, and even the ugly. The villian doesn't even die horribly. He just vanishes. You sit reading the last couple of pages feeling depressed and empty. I bought this book in London to read on a flight back to Los Angeles. I just left it on the plane. Take my advice. Smith has so many better books than this. If you're looking for something along this line, try his book "Cry Wolf". It's just as exciting and also has a clever and satisfying ending.

Not for the Infantile and Imbecile !!!
Unarguably, this book is yet an other one of Mr.Smith's Captivating Best ! If you lack the flair for adventure, this book is definitely not for you. This is in retaliation to 'someone' who openly derogated Mr. Smith and his works.Although, some of his works may reflect ruthless gore and lots of violence, the fact is that one being able to imajine and be involved deeply with the scenes and characters as described by him only proves how vivid and clear his descriptions are. When it comes to 'describing',Wilbur Smith is invincible. It requires deeper imajination and reading in between the lines than just racing through plain text to enjoy Mr.Smith's works.'Thou shalt not blameth,if thou not understandeth. I Would reverse the allegations on Smith and would confidently say that you'll never get bored of any book by Wilbur Smith!

Bloody Funny Book
This work is another brilliant action/adventure story from Wilbur Smith. While it did have Mr. Smith's typical assortment of blood and violence, what made it stand out so much to me was O'Flynn's hilarious antics.

Not very helpful
I ordered this book with high hopes, after visiting Melinda's website. However, the book was a disappointment. It contained VERY little information about the development of playskills in typical children, stages of play, and what skills should be taught first. Instead, the book was more of a personal narrative; a collection of the author's personal experiences in teaching her own son how to play, and excerpts of notes written by her child's therapists. The information was too specific to her high-functioning child to be of use to many parents and professionals who work with children at different levels. Much of the book was comprised of the same lists available on her website. Save yourself the money, and buy another, more useful book.

Playing can be fun
As adults we forget "how" to play, this book more than reminds us. It outlines ways to play with blocks, legos, puzzles, action figures and lots more. Anything your child enjoys playing with can be used to teach playskills. The step-by-step concrete instructions include dialogue and almost guarantee success. Skills addressed include imitative play, pretend play, toy play, music, games and sensory play. This book is sooo helpful and full of great ideas.

This book has boosted our in-home ABA program!
This book has taken our in-home Verbal Behavior program to new heights! It is simple to read, understand and implement! My son has ASD and is 3.6 yrs. old....he has a vocabulary of maybe 25 words at this point but his play skills are now booming! The ideas that Dr.Smith gives are for all levels of dev. delays....this allows the book to assist us as my son moves onward and upward. My therapists are also extremely happy with his progress. Kudos! Dr.Smith....thank you for helping a parent in need....someday I'll have my son write you a thank you himself......just you wait and see!

Interesting but flawed
The quotes in this book give you a good window to the hypocracy of Saddam Hussein. However the graphic design takes away from its utility. This is a book meant for decoration, but not actually to be read. It seems as if the graphic designer went mad while laying out this piece. Fortunately this is a small light book, or you would get a real workout spinning it about to read it page to page.

An excellent tongue-in-cheek spin on Evil Incarnate
Put together to look like a cute little coffee house quote book, complete with upsidedown and diagonal text, colors, jokes and cartoons, it's refreshing sometimes to step out of our seriousness and laugh at men like Saddam. He probably is the most dangerous man in the world, but when we can look at his "wisdom" we get to see a bit of his madness while we snicker at his would-be profundity. Also in this series are Khaddafy, Castro and Bin Laden. Collect them all.

The Rants Raves and Thoughts of Moammer Khadafy: The Dictator in His Own Words and Those of Others (Rants Raves and Thoughts)

Worthless
For the most part, this book contains quotes from Khadafy's three-volume Green Book, an unintelligible collection of his thoughts (if they can be termed that) on history, politics, economics and life in general. Not only are they not particularly entertaining, but the graphics employed by the authors make them difficult to read.

The only entertaining thing in the book is Moammer's rather extravagant claim that, among other aspects of Arab culture that the West has stolen are the works of William Shakespeare -- his real name, it seems, was Sheik Speare. The authors suggest that Moammer said this jokingly, but I have heard from a reliable source that he was dead serious. The man does not joke.

A new kind of silly little book at the checkout counter
This strange little book packed with quotes about & from Moammar Khadafi is great. Some parts are funny, others intriguing, and some frightening, but it's all very good & well put together.

Entiendes?: Queer Readings, Hispanic Writings (Series Q)
Published in Hardcover by Duke Univ Pr (Txt) (1995)
Authors: Emilie L. Bergmann and Paul Julian Smith
Amazon base price: $59.95
Average review score:

mediocre book about a potentially great subject
This anthology looks at "queer" themes in Spanish-language and Latino cultural productions. Unfortunately, like many gay Hispanic books, there is too much focus on tedious Spanish materials and too little focus on the cool stuff that gay and lesbian Latino artists are currently doing. I prefered Munoz' "Disidentifications" and Manrique's "Imminent Maricones" much more than this. However, this is one of the first gay Hispanic anthologies, so I must give it some credit for its originality.
