Making a Killing: Hmos and the Threat to Your Health
Published in Hardcover by Common Courage Press (1999)
Authors: Jamie Court and Francis Smith
Amazon base price: $29.95
Average review score:

An engaging and revealing read
Jamie Court writes a book notable both for its lucid prose and understandable analysis. Court, a consumer advocate and recognized expert on healthcare issues, here examines and critiques the strengths and weaknesses of the prevalent American healthcare system. Particularly interesting is his analysis of the motivations of HMO management and the ways they seek the profit motive. Court methodically details why the system's priority is not maximizing the patient's health, but controlling cost by limiting the use of resources.

Court and Smith do not forget the human face of those injured by this industry and bring them to life with a number of moving anecdotes. These tragic cases, however, are not what is at the heart of this important book. These anecdotes serve well because they are clearly not breakdowns in the system but rather it accomplishing its goal of increasing profit at any "cost."

Wakeup Call
Have you had problems with medical providers and the organizations that control your access to health care? This book tells how the system works, and unveils the politically correct industry phrases, explaining what they really mean. The book is full of well documented cases that will make your hair stand on end. The authors do not skirt the issues -- they confront them head on, with practical suggestions on how to survive the health care "industry." There are excellent resources listed for those who want to further research these issues. This book moved me to tears, and I only wish that the book were fiction instead of fact, but the truth is that there are atrocities being committed every day. My heartfelt thanks to all of the victims, or in some cases, their survivors, for sharing their experiences with the reader. Don't believe it couldn't happen to you, and if you're not actually in an HMO, you will still benefit from this book.

BEWARE..are you next to become a victim of an HMO...
My mother was the victim of a denial for a procedure. The doctor's name and the HMO who denied the procedure are in the book. The denial was ultimately overturned in the "review process." However, it was too late for her. She suffered needlessly for months, and died. A classic example of something described in the book.

This book was a gift. I started casually reading the first several pages not knowing what to expect. As I read, I am more outraged and sickened about HMOs, than I have been for the past year. I have had to set the book aside on several occasions until I could calm down enough to read more.

I have worked in the medical field for almost thirty years. I am now quite convinced I should change professions and I have not yet finished the book. Better yet, counterattack from within!

I highly recommend reading this book. I truly sympathize with the individuals who have been victimized and survived, and can certainly relate to the victims' families.

Poignant little memoir
This is a wonderful, unassuming narrative about the final days of F. Scott Fitzgerald which paints him as a real human being with real problems, writing immortal fiction with a dying hand. His fragility and beauty is evident, and this quick read is a must for anyone determined to learn about the real Fitzgerald.

A Chronicle of a Dying Star
This is a wonderful book, poignant yet revealing, just like the man it is about. Frances Kroll Ring was Fitzgerald's secretary in the last few years of his life. What she details in her memoir will enlighten anyone who has only ever thought of Fitzgerald as merely an alcoholic who just stumbled into writing. Yes, she records that he was drinking well up to his death, but he was also doing something important. He was in the middle of writing "The Last Tycoon", a work that was to be unlike his previous efforts, more mature and reflecting a different sensibility. But, as one finds out at the end of "Against the Current", he never realized his goal. The great work was left unfinished, and therefore one more tragedy closed the curtain on an already sad life.

being filmed in Toronto- Spring release....
To be featured on ShowTime-TV channel..by Henry Bromell,a Fitgerald expert-writer,(NY). It's neither a docu, nor a BioPic. Kroll's memoir, 1985..details his last frantic attempt in Hollywood-- to finish.."The Last Tycoon"...Scott died-at 44- heart attack-Dec.21,1940 after years of smoking/ drinking. His wife..Zelda is played by Sissy Spacek...who read the 1960's bio.."Zelda".
Kroll, now 85 has visited the set in Canada-where producers found Spainish-style hacienda..like Scott's in LA.

Very useful information, but the setup is mediocre
On the whole, I will not comment on the software itself, as it is a great tool in general; anyone familiar with the print edition will also very find this edition useful.
However, I do wish to warn anyone who thinks that the setup of this program will be particularly easy. Do not be fooled into thinking that by buying a CD-rom you will get all of the software at once. Instead, the CD includes an internet software package called "AvantGo," which, after successful setup will have you download the software to install onto your handheld.
This part of the setup I found rather disappointing. Why bother packaging a CD when you will have the customer do is go online afterwards?
Customer service provided by the publisher is non-existent (I sent them a question, but never received a reply--it's been two weeks now).
Finally, on the back cover of the CD case, the description mentions that images could be installed onto your handheld. In my hands, this is not the case.

So, on the whole, I would give 5 stars to the information provided by the software (once correctly installed), but only 1 star for the packaging, ease of installation, and customer service I received . . . hence the "average" 3 star rating.
