great resource for art historians interested in masculinity
this book seeks to briefly encapsulate the history of the male figure in (western) art. it does a good job of providing a variety of styles and media, and the images are always very interesting. also, as a dancer, it is fascinating to note how the body becomes more and more realistic as anatomy is more fully studied and understood. it is a great resource for those interested in this branch of art history, as well as those who are interested in the way culture has looked at the male body.
A thoroughly refreshing entry into art history
Adam; The Male Figure in Art by Edward Lucie-Smith sets out to explore how artists have perceived and represented man as a subject in every form of the arts. With his characteristic enthusiasm and wit Lucie-Smith offers enough treasures of painting, sculpture, photography, murals from Egypt and Rome and Greece to satisfy even the most avid art historian. It is a pleasure to discover young contemporary artists along side the ancients and the grand masters. This is a potpouri, a delectable, energetic voyage that begs frequent return visits. A must from the current coffee table art book selection for the holidays!

great book
It's so refreshing in these turbulent times to read about these heroes.
Unlike other medal of honor books, which just offer the citations or summaries of the citations, this book offers unique looks into the heroes by way of interviews with them. They each have amazing stories and incredibly interesting lives.

Beyond Glory
At first, I did not like the fact that the book was written by someone who openly protested during the Vietnam war. In my belief he had not earned the right to even speak with these hero's of America. The author did a great job relating the stories of these American heroes in their own words. This is a must read. We are loosing the hero's of our past wars at an alarming rate due to old age finally catching up to them. It was amazing to hear these men talk about their great deads like it was an everyday occurrence.

Condensed Capitalism
To understand capitalism, read the Wealth of Nations. But, to really understand it, as well as the other ideas of Adam Smith, read his essential works. This book allows the reader to fully grasp the concepts of capitalism and get a clear picture of how and why it works. Thankfully, Heilbronner did not dilute the works of Smith, he just condensed them for the modern day reader. With this book you can cut through the jargon and see the real points that Smith was trying to get across.
A Great Introduction to Adam Smith's Ideas
After reading Heilbroner's The Worldly Philosophers, I decided to read Smith's Wealth of Nations, but found myself daunted by the length and language of the book. Then I discovered Heilbroner's Essential Adam Smith and was hooked. The book offers the essential parts of Wealth of Nations, as well as a good sampling of some of his other works. As a result, I have not only read the entire Wealth several times, but have also read everything by and about Smith that I can find. Heilbroner's book is a good way to get to the heart of Smith's thinking, but, like me, you will probably find yourself wanting to learn more about the man, his ideas, and his life. Enjoy!

very interesting book--
I think this is quite a nice book with some great pictures to complement the text, which tells of a mining town and many interesting stories surrounding the gems found there.
great, unique book
I highly recommend this book to anyone who has a passion for general science, gem & minerals, geology or who is a history buff. It is a smooth read from start to finish, and details many interesting facts with wonderful pictures. Most importantly, however, it tells of a world-class mine in a "farmer's piece of the world" that few know about.
Powers of the Mind

Great, down-to-earth, visionary
I first saw this book in 1982, and even after 20 years of being a "fan" of how the mind works, this one stands out as unique. Interestingly, he looks at all the different mind mysteries (from Yaqui sorcerers to est (now Landmark) to Aldous Huxley to floating in a sensory deprivation tank) as being different applications of the same "secret ingredients", and seeks the commonalities as clues to what's really going on under the surface.
I learned a lot, and his analysis has stood the test of time.
Influential
This book changed my life. It gave me a new perspective on the human ability to function in harmony with, as opposed to at odds with, his environment. This new outlook has allowed me to approach each day with renewed optomism and expectation for success instead of disappointment. If there was a way for me to personally express my gratitude to this author I would certainly do so.

Thank you
This book is a must for anyone who wants to know why our fathers and grandfathers and great fathers put on suits and medals and march on April 25th each year. Most of the men who fought there are now dead, but I hope and pray the spirit they displayed on those Turkish cliffs remain somewhere. This book will make you laugh, and cry, and having only bought it from a book store at Easter, I'm sure you'll be able to get a copy somewhere. It should be on every Australian shelf.

Excellent
Book was more than I expected. A lot of detailed information. I was able to contact several marinas and get inquires answered. The CD was also excellent, a cruise could be planned with ease, for stop off points using dockage rates. Highly recommended for planning first time cruises.

The Beatles London

Wonderful
I gave this book to my brother when he moved to London, and he later said it was addictive to have around and use to visit where the Beatles did what they did. I visited him since then, and used the book myself to visit scenes from the movie HELP and A HARD DAY'S NIGHT, go to Chiswick House to see where The Beatles filmed the "Paperback Writer" and "Rain" videos, and go to many other Beatles London sites. This is a must-have book for anyone who is a Beatles fan and is going to visit London. Or for anyone who wants to be an armchair explorer of their old haunts. It's entertaining reading even if you'll never go to London.

MADAM ADAMS
"The Bowl of Heaven" is an exceptional book on the subject of astrology. Author Evangeline Adams (1865 - 1932) was the most esteemed astrologer of her day and she even had her own radio spot in the early '30's. At the turn of the century she predicted that a hotel owner was in the worst possible danger after examining his chart; he scoffed and his hotel burned to the ground in a bizarre fire immediately afterwards (No, she didn't commit arson!) Adams convinced a judge in New York City in 1914 that Astrology was an "exact science" . She was handed an anonymous birthdate (it was the judge's sons') and proceeded to tell the judge, with amazing accuracy details of the man's character, talents and major events in his life! - her case was dropped after she was accused of "fortunetelling" (which was then against New York state law). This remarkable woman foresaw WWII and her very own death in 1932. Any book this woman wrote is invaluable concerning the subject of astrology because she wrote in a fresh, clear and easily understood manner. I wish someone would write a biography about this very interesting person who was ahead of her time in her thinking and actions.
