Good, but not Great
Maybe it's just me, but I can only take so much drama before my eyes roll up inside my head, my brain explodes and I start rooting for the bad guys: "For the love of god, would someone just kill her already?"

This book was kind of like that.

Zenobia, god bless her, is a wonderful main character. She's smart, beautiful, witty. In fact, she's everything except lucky. First, her mother is raped and murdered. Then her husband is murdered. Her lover (Marcus) weds another woman, and Caesar her hated enemy, captures her and makes her his mistress.

But wait! It gets worse.

Her oldest son is a wimp. Her youngest son's a fool. Her friends are beheaded. Her city and everyone in it is destroyed. And while she goes a little crazy, she is still forced to bed the enemy because her daughter will be murdered if she doesn't. I think it was around the time Zenobia was forced to have sex in front of spectators I threw 'Beloved' out the window and haven't picked it up since. Oops.

My recommendation? IF you dig drama and angst... you'll love this book. If you don't? Read something else. And if you are bi-polar, OCD, or are presently taking medication for depression? AVOID AVOID AVOID. *wink*

Substance, not drivel, in this romance
From the moment of her birth, the stars and signs foretold that Zenobia, descendant of Cleopatra, would be blessed in love and in war.

"Beloved" takes place during the Roman invasions of Palmyra (in the Syrian region of the world). I don't know enough about history to know if this is accurate, but the story was good enough to keep me interested throughout. There are some tactical details which, surprisingly, tie in beautifully with the story of Zenobia's loves. Unlike many books of the romance genre, Zenobia's character is admirable not only for her beauty but for her intelligence. Sex notwithstanding, I would let an older teenager read this book.

"Beloved" surprised me because it was so well-written that it does not fall into a "fluff" category. This was a wonderful gift that was a good investment because I will read it again. I will seek out other books by Beatrice Small because I enjoyed this book so much.

Fantastic and very enticing...Beatrice Small does it again.
As a fan of Beatrice Small's books, I came across this book when I was shopping. Just after reading the description on the back cover, I was so intrigued I knew I had to buy this book. The main character Zenobia is very strong like Cailin in "Love Remember, Me". She was lucky to fall in love with two men. I especially enjoyed reading how she became reunited with Marcus after being enslaved by the wicked Aurelian. It seems to me that both Zenobia and Marcus are two soulmates fated to be together. Just reading page after page, you just can't put the book down. This one is defenitley magnificent!

Enchantress Mine
I don't know...I guess I must have been reading a different book. Yes, the history in Enchantress Mine is rich and detailed, and some of the characters in the book are rather amusing. But poor Mairin! Of the three love interests she has in this book, one lacks a manhood, another's manhood is questionable, and the other is just plain boring! C'mon Ms. Small, you can do much better! Read Skye O'Malley, Love, Wild and Fair or Wild Jasmine instead.

Great Story!
From the golden pleasure domes of Constantinople to the barbaric pomp of Malcolm of Scotland's court, this is the magical tale of ravishingly beautiful Mairin of Aelfleah, called Enchantress by the three men who loved her: Basil, Prince of Byzantium, who taught her passion's tender secrets...Josselin de Combourg, gallant knight of William the Conqueror...and Eric Longsword, the Viking whose tragic love for Mairin would never be fulfilled. And in their wild world gone mad with savage war, only love could truimph over all. This was a great Bertrice book. Up to her usual standard. Love her novels!

Bertrice Small sweeps you away
Bertrice Small takes us from 11th century England to Constantinople and back. Mrs. Small describes for us 2 different cultures and how young Mairin survives love, hate, and death in both worlds. From the beginning of Mairin and Basil's relationship, I felt that theirs wouldn't be the most desirable relationship. Mairin, very much a spirit of Nature, just didn't seem to fit in the bustle of Constantinople. She returns to England and soon finds tragedy. Help comes in the form of Josslin, a likable hero that falls for her. Standing in the wings is Eric Longsword, who is the perfect definition of a stalker and a man who refuses to understand Mairin's dislike of him. Although not as powerful as some of her other books, Enchantress Mine is a good read and will easily transport you to another place and time.

Wonderful for the historical setting, but....
Although most of Bertrice Small's books are amazing for their rich character developements, and historical accuracy, this book left me "wanting" just a little more than what was delivered. The romance between the hero and heroine was not a love match in my opinion...she marries him to get her lands back, a crazy woman drugs her and sells her into slavery which she escapes from to find a loving relationship with the Byzantine empires' most beloved general. Just as they are about to get married, she discovers her Saxon husband in the city and leaves with him to find their child. It seemed to me that she left with him out of a sense of duty and not because she was overwelmed with her love for this man...This book was definetly not typical of the other books that Ms. Small has written and was actually quite a let down for me...after searching for this book since it was published, I was expecting a lot more...overall I'd rate it a 3 for the wonderful description! ! s of the places the heroine visits and the history behind the story...for character developement I'd give it a 1.

Definatly not Sky O'Malley!
This book was okay. I havent read too many of BSmall's novels that I DO NOT like. I made the mistake of reading all of the Sky O'Malley books before this one and nothing can really compare to that series.

This book is about a young woman who has learned to live outside the glowing rays of family love. One of her grandfathers wifes hates her with a passion and does whatever she can to hurt or humiliate Cailin. When a Saxon named Wulf Ironfist comes to thier castle Cailin is given to him for the evening even though she is a virgin. Things happen that night and they decide to get married. What happens after that is an interesting story of her surival among slavers and other such people.

If you get emotional reading survival stories, this would be a little bit of a tear jerker.

perhaps a differnet look
Although this is not the most typical plot of Bertrice Small's dynamic inventions it gives the reader a differnet insight into the workings of love. Cailin had to pick between two different men? UGH! She had grown to love both and she could easily say each were her soulmate. Did you ever think such a thing would be possible? Bertrice did and thats why she showed it to us! She had to pick and couldn't reminisence otherwise the book would stop dead. I love the history and the descriptions of each place. Also the erotic details aren't as raunchy as her others but it will do :) a nice additon to her great dynasty!

Great - just one flaw
After reading the other reviews, I have to say that I really liked the book, except for one particular scene. When Miranda is forced into her extramarital relationships after going to Russia it is understandable. It is also reasonable that Jared becomes a rake after he believes Miranda is dead. However, the scene where Jared has sex with Gillian after he and Miranda are (happily) married is unnecessary. Yes, he feels terrible, and yes, she forgives him without question, but it was still disgusting. He could have said no or gotten the information without knowingly cheating on his wife. Ms. Small often has the characters engage in extramarital relations, but usually it is due to dire circumstances. I just really didn't like this scene. I'm surprised no one else has mentioned it.

But other than that (which happened fairly early on), I enjoyed the rest of the book, even if it did move sort of too quickly...

P.S. - My favorite Small book is "A Love for All Time." It starts in the middle of the O'Malley Saga, but since it is easy to read first.

Jared: a waste of storytelling.
This was the very first Bertrice Small novel I'd read. I'm a big fan of hers and have read most of her books (I'm addicted to the O'Malley saga!). UNCONQUERED features an indomitable, intelligent heroine; exciting, fast-paced story that never lags; exotic locales; and very steamy love scenes. The only drawback is Jared Dunham. I know Miranda was forced into marriage to him, but come on! There was never a more arrogant, boorish Bertrice Small leading man. If I were Miranda, I would have gladly become part of Mirza Khan's harem and said adieu to Jared. Jared lost even more points when he accused Miranda of having brought upon herself all the terrible things that had happened to her in Russia, when in reality those things would never have happened if he hadn't gone there in the first place and forced her to come after him.

old bookt still a great read
the book was amazing.the setting in Russia was just great, and and i loved the chemistry between Miranda and Jared.

This is the book that made me stop reading the series...
I was very into the first Skye O'Malley novel, and I couldn't wait to read the next one. Well I read this and I was so upset. I cried so much! I don't want to give away anything with this book, but I was so incredibly disappointed with the direction Skye's life (who she ends up with) took that I just decided to stop reading the series. I loved Niall and I loved Skye with Niall. That's all I can say. I can't express the way I felt when I read this book. I don't even think I finished reading this book after the "major part". I just knew what was going to happen and I knew I was going to hate it. I know this review is very discombobulated, but it's very difficult for me to write about this book without giving anything away (I hate when other reviewers do that). Still, I give this book three stars because of Bertrice Small's ability to move me to the point of hysterical tears. I also had to write her a letter because I was so upset. Oh, well.

Skye O'Malley follows her destiny!
For anyone who read "Skye O'Malley", this book exactly depicted her destiny as predicted by Osman, her astrologer and good friend. The depravity seemed cruel to some readers, but this is how it truely was for women during this period in time. I wanted to be this woman! She took her world as it was and molded it to her will. Bertrice Small has given me a wonderful woman to identify with, strong, determined, and yet with a wonderfully forgiving spirit. I am frantically collecting all the series before they go out of print!

excellant, Small really takes you away with Skye
If you love historical romance you must read the whold Skye Omalley saga. I stumbled upon it and after one book ran out a bought all of Miss Smalls other books. You will too!!! Full of romance and historical knowledge of old england around the time of Queen Bess.

You know a book is good when you cry from reading it
I believe this book to be the best Ms. Small has written. There is just enough history to help you understand whats happening in the story, but not so much as to make you not want to read on. I liked the chemistry between the characters. Fiona, kicked heinie in my opinon. She did not hide behind her thoughts and feelings like many think women of her time did. Angus is great once he get over his non commitment stage. I liked Narin best of all. I hated him for stealing Fiona from Angus, but as the book goes on you find out he is really a nice guy with a big heart. I really give this book 10 stars.....its my favorite romance novel

Another Great Book for Ms.Small!
The story is fast-paced, never a dull moment anywhere in the book.It is very descriptive, which helps to transport you to that time period. I finished it in 3 days. A truly enjoyable read!

Bertrice Small at her best !
While I have enjoyed every book Ms. Small has ever written, this is by far my favorite ! I have already re-read three times...and unable to put it down between readings !

Fiona Hay is a woman between a rock and a hard place throughout her life, doing her duty by her sisters, and to uphold her own honor. She makes mistakes, learns from them and is rewarded by being loved by the two most magnificent men one can possibly imagine. Interestingly enough, I enjoyed the character of Colin MacDonald even more than Black Angus Gordon...what a dynamic, rich character he is !

If you want to be swept up in medieval Scotland, and experience first hand of the 'taming' of the wild northern clans, then "Betrayed" will captivate you completely !

Great Heroine, Strained Plot
Of all the O' Malley heroines (including Skye herself), Valentina St. Michaels Barrows is by far my favorite. Small portrays her as GENUINELY clever, kind-hearted, brave and witty; we're told she's beautiful, but that somehow doesn't seem important in light of her warm personality.

Why this wonderful heroine had to be dropped into a muddle of a book is a mystery. Suddenly Valentina is made to doubt her paternity and faster than you can swear "God's foot!" she's off to "the East" to discover the truth (even though candidates two and three are presumed dead). Worse, she's burdened with two clods for suitors--Tom Ashburne and Padraic Burke who is Valentina's own cousin (smacks of incest, no?). Once in "the East" Valentina falls into all kinds of melodramatic, sadistic sexual traps which I did not find erotic so much as disturbing and a little disgusting. Methnks Small needs to lay off the harem intrigue--it really does get dull. Finally, this book includes threads from Love Wild and Fair and the Kadin, in addition to previous O'Malley novels. This makes for more of a curtain call than a book.

In closing, I did find Valentina's special relationship with Elizabeth I to be tender and touching. The two characters seem to bring out the excellence in each other. Why not dump the questionable romance and craft a novel between England's great ruler and her favorite servant?

One of my favorites in the Skye O'Malley saga
I truly enjoyed Valentina and thought her character better than Velvet and Jasmine. I loved how this book touched on so many other stories. The Mediteranean island where Janet Leslie was taken (see "The Kadin") and the return of Cica Pasha. (see "Love Wild and Fair"). Of course, I loved seeing Esther Kira again. Valentina is stronger than Aidan, but very much her mother's daughter. I can't say enough good things about this book. There is romance, adventure, and on-the-edge-of-your-seat-suspense.

My favorite in the O'Malley Saga
Valentina is my favorite heroine in the O'Malley series and more like Skye than Skye's offspring is. When Valentina goes to court to serve Elizabeth I, I was heartbroken. Mrs. Small's exceptional writing and incredible detail showed me how the lively days of courtlife in Elizabeth's youth had dramatically changed and become a somber place as Elizabeth approached her last days. When a family secret is revealed, Valentina shows us her adventurous spirit and heads East! Her adventures are incredible! I appreciated how Mrs. Small touched on "The Kadin" through the duchy of San Lorenzo and reintroducing us to Esther Kira (who met Valentina's mother in "A Love for All Time"). Also, the appearance of Cica Pasha tied into "Love Wild and Fair." Wonderful! (A note to Mrs. Small: Since you have touched on Esther Kira so often, how about a book dedicated to her entire life. Just a thought.) I wept at least 3 times and was filled with anger, frustration, joy, fear, and triumph as Mrs. Small weaved her magic spell of words and phrases and pulled me into her story. If you haven't read the O'Malley series, you might get a little confused. You should at least read "A Love for All Time" which is the tale of Aidan, Valentina's mother, and is the basis of much of this book's plot.

Stripes: the romance novel

Ok, I hope everyone reading this has seen the movie "Stripes." "Stripes" begins wild and hilarious, but then an assanine plot is introduced and the movie goes to pot.

Such is the case with "Wild Jasmine." This book starts out great. Yasaman is a young girl who is pursued by her half brother, Salim. She is still young and innocent, he is a lusty monster. Their incestuous moment together is one of the most sensual passion plays I've ever read. Yasaman goes on to marry another man and their relationship is fiery, passionate, and beautiful. Yasaman reveals herself to be very strong-willed and complex.

After her husband dies, the book turns bad. She has a succession of husbands/lovers that also die. The book focuses on sex and lust at the expense of character development. Yasaman grows up far too suddenly and loses her fiery qualities.

I could not give this book a one because I enjoyed the beginning far too much. This book and its heroine had such promise and potential. The later developments soured my feelings toward them both. However, the first part was extraordinarily delicious and shouldn't be missed. I recommend that Beatrice Small/historical romance fans read the first part of this book and then return it. Make up your own ending, its much more fun. Yasaman was a great character, but Ms. Small couldn't take her anywhere. The Skye O'Malley saga has finally run out of steam and Ms. Small can only write about sex -- even that is old and tired. Romance novels require more than just sex to keep my interest. I believed that "Wild Jasmine" was going to be a well-rounded book, but I was greatly disappointed.

I have read it twice!! - Laura Taylor
Yasamin Kama Begum, later angelicized to Jasmine de Marisco comes to life in this edition to the "Sky O'Mally Saga." While this book is decidedly more mild in comparison to Bertrice Small's other erotic writings it is no less tame. The story opens with our heroine narrowly escaping an incestious relationship with her brother. Later Jasmine becomes involved with the future king. In between there is much love and lust and scandals to keep you turning pages. "Wild Jasmine" touches all my emotions. If you like to laugh, cry, and yell in anger at the characters in the books you read then "Wild Jasmine" is for you!

I loved it!
Bertrice Small has outdone herself again. The story of Jasmine deMarisco has been engrained into my thoughts. It was so good because Jasmine falls in love over and over again, then she couldn't wed Prince Henry and that's what made it a tragic love story...and what happened to Rory Macquire? Well I hope I find out in the sequel, since I didn't like the ending too much, but on the other hand, I think Ms. Small was always planning to make the sequel. And using Catriana and Patrick Leslie's son Jemmie (which I love the book "Love, Wild and Fair") I haven't read enough of Bertrice Small's books and I have a feeling that many of the characters link together some way or another, which is great since when I read a story, I don't forget, and it pleases me for her to mention another heroin/hero from one of her previous novels. Bertrice has a way of drawing you in and keeping you enthralled with her stories.

Wild Jasmine made me laugh and cry as well as dream. I ! wish they could make movies of her books. Keep them coming and I look forward to the sequel of Jasmine deMarisco's adventure with Jemmie Leslie, Earl of Glenkirk..the Glenkirk Chronicles.

No longer Lust's Leading Lady
I look forward to each new Bertrice Small book with extreme anticipation. I have especially enjoyed reading the continuing saga of the O'Malley family. However, since the original character Skye has died, her decendents have become quite boring (as compared to her). They no longer have the adventrues that Skye herself once did. I was especially disappointed that Fortune never did find out that Rory was her real father. That would have been reminisent of the Skye legacy.

With each new book, I find myself to be in less of a hurry to buy the book. I do hope that if Bertrice Small does continue with the series Skye's Legacy, she puts a bit more zest into the stories.

She's back....
I could not put this book down. Beseiged is not like any of her recent books (Bedazzled, Betrayed, Deceived, Darling Jasmine, The Innocent) because the characters are more developed. Small still lacks the strength of her early books (The Kadin, Adora, Skye O'Malley) I cannot repeat this enough.

Fortune displays personality traits more reminiscent of Skye. Jasmine acted more like the Jasmine of Wild Jasmine. However, I found the character of James Leslie lacking the depth of the James Leslie in Wild Jasmine. I enjoyed meeting Kieran Devers.

In addition, the plot line was not as "cookie-cutter" as her previous recent novels. I was pleased with the refreshing change of pace for Small. I eagerly await Small's next book in the series. I am looking forward to see how Autumn Rose grows up.

An Improvement
I have just started reading Bertrice Small recently and started with the Skye O'Malley series. I have enjoyed this family series. I get hooked on all the family and eagerly await each new book to see what this active, adventurous family is doing. There is not a huge amount of references to Skye's many other kids and their activities in this book. But it is still well done. You could very easily pick up this book and read it without having read the rest of this series (however I recommend that you do so.) The history details are always very well done and interesting. Ms. Small has taken her readers to Ireland and the New World this time. The O'Malley clan will soon be worldwide. Fortune is every bit like the free spirited women in her family and wants to find that passionate, true love. Her mother and father have gotten their backbone back in this book. It was refreshing to see Jasmine to take a stand again. The only thing that I did not like was the Kidnapping scene. It seemed incomplete or maybe a last minute thought (not very well developed.) The book could stand alone without that scene. I look forward to seeing a mention of Fortune and more family moving to the New World as the colonies expand.
