Goosebumps move over!
Canadian author Janet Lunn has written one of the most interesting and weirdest books I have ever read. The Unseen is a collection of short scary stories that Ms. Lunn claims are based on true accounts. I picked this book up because I am fan of Janet Lunn and enjoy her series that started with the Root Celler. The Unseen has been in my conscience since I read it, and I have been desperatly been trying to locate another for my own library. If you enjoy a good scare this book will deliver.

A very good sourse for projects on embedded applications
Embedded applications are increasing by the day. Many new areas are being explored. This book really makes things easier and it encourages to undertake good projects which could later be very useful in everyday applications. Full of ideas and suggestions. Although the microcontroller 8051/8052 is considered as outdated, this book is a good start. Once the basic techniques for the same are grasped switching over to other newer controller chips will be a cakewalk.
This book (along with other similar titles by author) bridges the gap betwwen academic persuit and real life applications. For every idea discussed, an innovative student can think of say 3 more new ideas. This is not just a book that gives a few projects, which you do and that's the end of the story. It allows you to evolve new ideas and enough grounding is provided such that you can implement the same with confidence and 100% success rate.

-For students in this field this book is a must.

Another winner
Jan Axelson is known for her clarity of writing and for her ability to make sophisticated technology "user friendly". This book is another winner in a line of excellent technical books.

Great book for an introduction to Microcontrollers
Although the 8052 processor is very outdated, it still can be used to control many things in this ever-so-hi-tech-world. The 8052 proves to be a very affordable microcontroller, rather than buying a full blown computer or PC104-based computer. This book is very introductory, but it does assume you know basic electronics. The 8052 is no where near as complex as an FPGA, but the programming rituals can prepare you before you learn the basics of programming the FPGA(theory and your thinking of logic). The experience gained by playing around with the 8052 sure gave me the important thinking processes needed for other design projects at work.

Parallel Port Complete: Programming, Interfacing & Using the PC's Parallel Printer Port

Excellent Source
This book has it all. It has to be one of the only good books on the subject. If you look on the web for information on parallel port control, it will probably refer to her book. Her website is a source of tons of information, and is a great addition to the book. A warning however; if you are not familair with computers, or visual basic programming, then this is not the book for you. You really need to have an understanding at the bit level. I highly recommend it.

This book provides one of a kind information. Buy it!
Axelson's book conducts you through the intricacies of accessing your PC parallel port from Visual Basic. It covers the all-important hardware details of each variation of parallel port, so that you can understand what may (and may not) be done using them. Sufficient example programs are included to illustrate each topic. Also included are the 16-bit and 32-bit DLLs required to access the parallel port I/O registers

Very thorough treatment of parallel port control from VB.
This is a very good book for those interested in controlling the parallel port interface on the PC. The most common usage is for cheap/inexpensive data acquisition or control, but the book also covers "LapLink" type transfers, high speed printing and device chaining. In my opinion, this books greatest strength is that all of the code is provided in Visual Basic, Delphi and C. Visual Basic and Win95/WinNT cannot directly control the printer port, so the authors have made a library of routines for use with any language, thus filling a hole that exists in Visual Basic. Anyone who wants to directly control the parallel port from Visual Basic will find everything they need (both on disk and in instruction) in this book.

Nice intro to hardware, poor software coverage
This is a nice book if you want a basic introduction to the serial port from a hardware/circuits point of view. Primary coverage is on the RS232 and RS485, but there is information relevant to other serial standards as well. There is also information for serial communications using microcontrollers such as the 8052 and Basic Stamp; surprisingly NONE of the popular Motorola series (mc68hc11, hc12, hc16, etc) are covered.

The glaring weakness of the book is the software coverage, which uses Visual Basic. Why use such an arcane and limited language? Very few engineers and techies use VB, so the majority of the intended audience will miss out on about half of the book. This is a shame since reading code for serial programming gives tremendous insight into what is really happening. This book would be useful to many more people had it been written in a standard language such as C or Java or even assembly.

Serious On Serial (SOS)
The book should find space on the shelf of anyone interested in interfacing a Windows PC to another device using the serial port. Do you want to communication with a microcontroller or other embedded processor? Here it is. Axelson spends time covering information that you simply will not find elsewhere. Her BASIC Stamp program example is an illustration of this detail. Also covered are details on RS-422/RS-485, cabling, etc.

Serial Port Complete is for the Visual Basic user
The book Serial Port Complete is an excellent review of the hardware and signal handling aspects of using the RS-232 and RS-485 systems. It deals well with many of the "rules of thumb" that many have had to learn the hard way over time. The book is limited in its help for the PC user. While it has many usefull examples for the Visual Basic user, most of these can not be extended to the C++ user in a simple clean manner. The Section on using the Windows API's is much too simplified to actually use it for anything usefull (even the author indicates it is limited).

Not the best book i read but not the worst!!
I read The Root Cellar in school and i have to say that it's strong point was at the beginning. But it was very informative about the Civil War. I didn't think that that was the best ending the author chose and it could have been a little more exciting but it wasn't that bad!

The BEST book ever!!
If you like adventure then you will love this book "The Root Cellar" by Janet Lunn. This book is about a girl named Rose who goes to relative to relative . If you are wondering why, it is because her parents died when she was a young girl. and she went to live with her grandma. Her grandma died and then Rose started to go from place to place because the relative died or didn't want her around. Rose travels back in time by going into a root cellar. This book is called "The Root Cellar" because there is a root cellar where Rose enjoys being alone. Rose was never around kids her age , but her grandmothger told her that she was better off without them. She meets two children who are around her age and they create a strong bond. Rose and Sisan, who is one of her new friends, go on an exciting adventure they will remember for the rest of their lives!!!!!! The other child that Rose meets is Will. The book is a five star book to me and I suggest this book yo anyone who doesn't like reading. I hate reading and I loved this book. This book was so descriptive. When you read this book and think about it the book is so relaxing. If you close your eyes you will see the images in your mind it is so descriptive! So anyone can read it!!!!!

I really enjoyed this book, I thought it was one of the best books I ever read. But then again I'm only 13 and haven't read as many books as some of you. But any way I hope you at least give this book a try.You might be surprised!

Pretty good-different
This was a very interesting story of a couple marrying due to necessity. Valerie was left destitute by a gambling father and brother. Malcolm lost the roll of dice and so was "chosen" to take care of her. He was only being honorable to marry her. This is not a sugary romance but is about a couple who matures, learns to make the best of it, and eventually realize they are better together then apart. There were no villainess people setting out to shoot, kidnap or compromise our heroine. Only the selfish money grubbing Lady Deidre sets out to spoil a floundering marriage. The central couple, Malcolm and Valerie ran hot and cold throughout the book. I never thought they would end up staying together after hearing the word "divorce" used so many times! The secondary characters added nice dimension. The only thing lacking was a little blurb from Malcolm about it being the best roll of dice he ever lost-but that would make it the syrupy romance it is not.

The Devil's Own-Review
The Devil's Own is a very creative and strange book. It deserves the title of Gothic Romance more than any book I've read. It keeps you in suspense and still leaves you with mouth agape when you have closed it.

Very Good!
Very good book! I have never read a book on where the point of view was from a Loyalist. I think that this is very important, to show that they are human beings too! Phoebe Shows courage and impluse as she rushes off to deliver a message with only the river for direction. She meets Jem Morrisay on the way and learns even more, about love and life. I won't spoil the ending for you, but expect the unexpected. AN altogether successfully told and written story. I totally recommend it for you historical fiction lovers (thats me!)

one of the best!
it was so interseting!! you never know whats going to happen next!! there is so much going on you really have to pay attion!! You just can't put the book down!!

An excellent book!!
I found The Hollow Tree to be a wonderful but sad book. The book got more and more interesting as it went along...I also found it interesting because it relates to American and Canadian history. The book was exciting throughout...

Haunted in the New World by her Dark Cousin
This dark fantasy does not approach Lunn's superb THE ROOT CELLAR, but proves an interesting read all the same. Two cousins in 19th century Scotland, born the same week, grow up inseparable. Despite their different temperaments and appearance, Mairi and Duncan are two halves of one coin; they vow at age 11 to remain of couple for ever. Then Duncan's family decides to emigrate to Upper Canada, a move which threatens to tear assunder the unique bond that links their destinies. When the story opens, Mairi has agonized for four years; can their devotion to each other triumph over ocean, time, distance and death itself?

Mairi endures the incredible hardships of emigrant travel, as she struggles on her personal quest alone. She has sacficed everything she knows and loves to be reunited
with Duncan. Unfortunately, the folks in Hawthorn Bay on the St. Lawrence River first treat her as a heroine, then as slightly daft, but they ultimately consider her suspicious. With her spirit talk and dire predictions, even the children turn against her. Will she be branded as a witch in this Puritannical New World? Persecuted by worse than ignorant colonists, Mairi realizes that she herself is being stalked by
evil--using Duncan's voice to lure her to disaster. She is terrified of the forest, yet morbidly attracted to a special flat rock which is linked with Duncan's disappearnce. After her physical and emotional pilgrimmage, how far must she travel to ultimately join him? Which path will she choose to meet her beloved? A mysterious read about a brave young woman who wants to control her own destiny.
