An excellent reference guide.
If you want to learn the ins and outs of Netscape Navigator Gold, this is the book for you. There are lots of "goodies" that the average person will not find just by using Netscape's browser capabilities. This isn't the sort of book you read cover-to-cover. It's more like a box of Whitman's chocolates. The reader is inclined to sample various points in different chapters, and for this reason, this book is a better reference than it is straight reading material. The information on Gold's web editing capabilites is excellent, and is much clearer than Netscape's documentation. It was worth trying because this feature can save a web designer a tremendous amout of time by eliminating the typing of hyperlinks on a listed page. The book plainly notes that the web designer will still have to polish the page on a text editor, and I was grateful for the honesty. The section on JavaScript is vague. You are much better off buying the Dansesh book (Teach Yourself Javascript 1.1 in a Week) or the O'Reilly book if you want to learn JavaScript. However, the chapters on JavaScript in "Netscape Navigator Gold 3.0" can serve as a useful introduction. Overall, this is still the best reference that I have seen on Netscape products.

It's just too good to be true...
This book helped me more on HTML 3 than any other book has. I paid upwards of $50 for other HTML books and this one is cheaper and twice as easy. Javascript, Java, HTML code, and the in's and out's of the internet are explain with samples and things to watch out for.

Absolutely the "bestest" book for Gold 3.0 in the world!
I'm a brand new PC learner (having "graduated" from a Mac!), and just got on the internet late last summer. This book is the best one I could've ever gotten, so easy to understand and use! There are no hard concepts to try to figure out, and his sense of humor is just great. He spells everything out step by step; even a child could understand and follow his instructions. He explains to the nth degree, and makes it all so clear that within a couple of hours, my web pages were done! (Not too bad for a lady in her 50's!!) He makes it all so simple and enjoyable, which it should be! His writing style is so great, that I will be looking for other books by him for other programs. Alan Simpson gets my heartfelt thanks for doing a masterful job!!

The Bible of Word Perfect 9
This book is huge but once you get into it, it is very helpful and very easy to follow. I found tricks that I never knew of after I read a shorter book on this program. It is easy to find the subject you are looking for. I would have liked to see more done with the other programs in the suite, besides Word Perfect.

I recommend it to anyone at the beginning or intermediate levels of Word Perfect.

A well written guide for database developers and managers
Mastering Microsoft Access For Windows 95 is a well written state of the art guide for Database developers and managers. This book covers everything completely with the exception of Visual Basic. Great for linking, importing, and exporting data. J. Douglas James, Database Developer Everett, WA

Comprehensive Book on MS Access 95
This huge book (1000+ pages) coveres just about everything you want to know about MS Access. It starts from the very beginning explaining all the concepts needed to use Access successfully. The book goes into some intermidiate / advanced topics like creating a custom application. It's only serious weakness is covering Visaul Basic for applications. You may want to pick up another book (or read the manuals) introducing that topic.

Pretty Good Book.
I had originally bought the Paul Litwin, Ken Getz Access 95 Developer's Handbook and found myself in over my head. That book recommended the Mastering MS Access Book by Olson and Simpson. I have found that these two books put together pretty much cover all aspects and all levels in developing Access 95 applications. I have bought a 3rd Access book and have yet to find a need to open it with these two books put together.

Of Course I still refer to the online help. But the Help oftentimes will not help you unless you know what you're looking for, using the correct terminology. This is where the books come in.

Good tutorial/reference combo for beginner/intermediate
I use this book as a combo tutorial/reference guide. It's not a total beginner's guide. But if you have some experience with command-line Windows, DOS or any Unix at all, this book should prove adequate in guiding you through the 80-90% of Red Hat-specific Linux you'll want to learn. I like the book's conversational tone, the short tutorials, and some of the Web links that are sprinkled throughout the text. The book was written about the time RH 6.2 came out, so it's missing info on the latest features, but it's still useful to me as I am now running RH 7.2.

Good ref for beginner/intermediate RH Iinux user
I think this book covers a large part of the typical kinds of tasks that a begining to intermediate Red Hat user will need to know in an adequate way. It's not a "Dummies" book, because it has more depth and includes a lot of useful references for further study. But you don't have to be an experienced Linux user, either.

Experts will moan that it's not a typical O'Reilly "Nutshell" book. But this book is for those who need more tutorials and a mild hand-holding for the hard stuff. I think it hits the "middle ground" in a useful way.

The book was written about the time RH 6.2 shipped. I am running RH 7.2 now and there is still a lot of info in this book is that is applicable.

I don't think the publisher updated it for RH 7+, but I don't know why. I have this book and older "Linux Unleashed" on my small shelf and find both of them are handy references.

Another one to get you through the exam
The book covers all the exam topics in an organised manner. Reading the book from cover to cover should be sufficient to pass the MS 70-218 exam.
I would not recommend the book for anyone looking for thorough explanation of the items covered. Too often details are missing, incomplete or even incorrect. For me, this makes the book useless as a reference for the topics included.
Sometimes the book is even frustratingly disappointing. As an example I can quote the paragraph on transforming binary to decimal numbers and vice-versa, something that you should master for some of the network related questions in the exam. Basically all the book says about it is this: "use the windows calculator in scientific mode". Sure, it will do the job, even during the exam where the calculator is available for use in all questions, however, it does not provide you with any understanding of these numbering systems.
So again, for passing the exam the book will do, if you are looking for a good reference and thorough explanation of topics covered in a precise manner, this book will not suffice.

Great Overview
While working on my MCSE certification, I happened to select this book for the "70-218 MCSA Managing a Windows 2000 Network Environment", and I'm sure glad I did. While not an in depth reference guide, this book was more than adequate as a guide to the exam, which is its intended function. I appreciated not rehashing binary conversion, and as it turned out, there was very little binary on my exam, which I passed. I found it to be an easy read, with good examples and thought provoking review questions. I especially liked the "2-Minute Drill" included at the end of each chapter.

The included practice test did a good job of instilling the exam topics, but with a total of just 70 questions, there could have been more. Also, the Examination Score report didn't actually give you a section analysis, which would have been good for review. While there are probably better practice exams available, the one included will certainly do the job. I did like the answer guide which explains the correct answers for questions you missed, and the reference section available during the "open book" test, which explains why each answer is right or wrong, helping you to understand the logic.

If you're looking for a study guide for the 70-218 exam, I would certainly recommend "MCSA Managing a Windows 2000 Network Environment Study Guide (Exam 70-218), by Alan Simpson, Rory McCaw".

Seems to be the complete package -
Microsoft's MCSA certification is fastly becoming the certification to obtain for those in the Network Administration positions. While the 70-218 exam seems to cover a great deal of material it's good to know that there is manuals out there that can help you study.

With over 95 exercises, over 15 labs and over 500 practice questions and half of the book dealing with troubleshooting, this is an excellent good user guide for both self study and in the classroom. What the authors have done is completely covered each objective and the overall result is one of the best guides on the market today.

From installing DNS to configuration of DHCP to working with group policies and server administration there is more than enough information and exercises to keep you very busy. I like the fact that this book is setup in a manner that allows you to work at your pace and also repeat lessons as you need to.

The cdrom included is also an added bonus; unlike most cds I have seen this one include videos so you can learn by watching. You also have the ability to take several practice exams before going live and they include and e-book; which has an added chapter for hotfixes and services packs.

Something new added to the Cd is the Master Exam, like no other software I have seen before. This software has very detailed explanations and they stay away from the Microsoft "most correct" answer type questions.

With the Master exam you can also download a 70-218 a simulation from LearnKey, again adding greater value to the overall package. With everything included you have the total package, about the only it doesn't do is take the exam for you.

Injustice to title
I am glad that I bought this book at a thrift store. I was disappointed in the content. The title should have been more closely associated to the content. I believe that the author was merely trying to ride on the sensationalism of the trial, contrary to his written statements within the book. Although I can sympatize with the author's anguish, while associated with the trial, a different title should have been chosen. As an adjunct professor,of Criminal Justice, I may make a passing comment in class about the content of the book. However, I certainly would not recommend it to my students.

A juror's view of sequestration
Kudos is due Tracy and Judith Kennedy for making the content of "Mistrial of the Century" more substantial than the title. The O.J. Simpson case is the nominal subject matter of this book, but the Kennedys do not simply toss another empty tome upon the already excessive pile of books that express outrage that Simpson was acquitted or framed, depending on the author's point of view. Rather, the Kennedys discuss the sequestration process and its horrific effects on him (leading him to a suicide attempt) and, necessarily, on her.

The Kennedys' descriptions of former juror Tracy's ordeal are frightening as they describe the nearly complete absence of rights the jurors were forced to undergo. Kennedy describes random searches of all his belongings, monitoring of his phone calls, and other indignities that even the accused did not have to suffer. The book seems brave and honest, particularly in the description of Tracy Kennedy's suicide attempt.

At the same time, the reader should be cautious about drawing the conclusions the authors obviously intend. First, the book mentions possible criminal action against Tracy Kennedy for various offenses, and any book by an accused, honest though it may be, must be viewed in light of the accusations (or, in this case, possible accusations, though time has suggested that none will be forthcoming). Second, and more important, the book is an attempt to bring to light a perceived injustice in the jury system. The O.J. Simpson case, however, was an anomaly among anomalies. Sequestration is itself used in only a minority of cases, and almost never for as long as was the case in the Simpson trial. The problems described are almost certainly not typical. That being said, the Kennedys' book makes it clear that, regardless of one's view of the correctness of the jurors' verdict, they were mistreated, sometimes by each other, but mainly by the forces that gave them their positions as jurors.

Very Enlighting Book
This book was not what I expected. This book is not about the O.J. Simpson Trial. These book goes into the way jurors are treated in our Judicical system, how jurrors are guarded and have the same rights as a person in jail. This book should be mandatory reading for all judges, prosecutors and defense attorneys who will have to select a jury that will be sequestered.

A little basic but good
Windows ME Bible didn't exactly interest me that much, it had a few good pointers but most of the stuff that was inside was pretty basic. It's good as a reference for later uses and does have some interesting tips on networing, but besides that, unless you are just starting out on learning your OS, it's better if you went to one of the more advanced books.

A great reference tool
This is one of those books that should be packaged with every new computer running Win Me. If you are new to computers or if you feel you have never fully grasped Win 95,98,or NT, this book will help. In nearly 1000 pages the author takes you through every facet (of Win Me) the average PC owner needs to know.

Because of the size of the book, realize this is not a quickstart guide. This is a book to be used as a reference. When you want to tweak your Registry, pull this book out.

This book was written for the user who has little or no experience with Windows systems. More experienced users may find the book boring, and thus skim through the book missing vital information

windows me
This book is the best learning tool you can buy to go with a computer, because it tells you everything and i mean everything about windows me, My suggestion is to, buy this book and sit in front of your computer and learn everything there is to know about the new windows me operating system, you wont regret it i promise.

CliffsNotes CREATING YOUR FIRST WEB PAGE
Published in Digital by Hungry Minds ()

Average review score:

Good beginning, for Windows users
This book really should have been titled 'Creating your first web page with Microsoft FrontPage Express', emphasizing that the book isn't of much use if you're a Mac or Linux user. I also have a minor quibble that the book implies that you need to install FrontPage Express from the Windows 98 CD - obviously you only need an Internet Explorer CD or download. These points notwithstanding, this is a very good introduction that really will help you design your own webpage. Once you've done that you can then go and learn a bit of HTML, beginning with something like Sams Teach Yourself HTML 4 in 10 minutes, or HTML 4 Made Simple (a British book, see amazon.co.uk website) rather than the mite disappointing CliffsNotes Creating Webpages with HTML.

Quickly Learn Web Page Basics
This is the best 115 pages that I've read! I didn't have the time to read a 500 page book on creating web pages with HTML 4 or Frontpage 2000. So I bought this book because I could do the exercises in it quickly and it was focused on tools that I already had with Windows98: Microsoft FrontPage Express, Personal Web Server, and the Web Publishing Wizard. After setting up these tools, you'll be off and running learning about text placement, backgrounds, graphics, multimedia, hyperlinks, and tables for an "Orchid Club" home page. And guess what, IT'S FUN, FAST AND EASY. By following the step by step instructions, you'll understand the basic concepts of creating a web page of your own. This book will take you from creating a home page in FrontPage Express, all the way to publishing your page on a Web Server. But beware: you will only be building a very basic web page. This book doesn't attempt to teach detailed HTML, the language behind all web pages. But you can learn HTML from various Internet sites or other books if you are interested. When you are done with this book, you'll have enough knowledge to build your own personal home page and put it on the Internet for everyone to see. From here, you could learn HTML to enhance your web page, or use products like Microsoft FrontPage 2000 to design a more sophisticated web site.
