This Book is the Best!
If you are an average student and really want to pass the test, USE THIS BOOK! It gives a basic review of math, grammar and language usage that is essential for doing well on the test. Also, there are 2 full practice exams as well as many practices tests throughout each section. After reviewing this book, you will understand the format of the test. You will know that you should ANSWER EACH QUESTION even if you guess. Just knowing this should help you because guess what--most students don't bother with even a basic review before the test. This test is graded on a percentile basis, so your score will depend on how well you do in relation to the other test takers. My son, an average student, studied this book, made a composite score of 89, and was accepted to his school. His two best friends, who are at his level in school, didn't study and weren't accepted. This book made all the difference.

This book is really helpful
This book was a big help because it had alot of practice tests for me to do. The tests also showed me what my weaknesses were. I am taking a coop class and this book in really helpful.

Vocabulary Workshop Series by Jerome Shostak
This vocabulary series is the best one that I have found to illustrate how the word is most often used. The vocabulary list is also well thought out; the words are actually in frequent use. You can't go wrong buying this series.

Outstanding vocabulary builder!
This text was introduced to me through my 5th grade son's private school. As a middle school teacher, I am always searching for add-on resources to enhance the public school curriculum. This is without a doubt the best I've found to date. It starts with level A (fifth grade) and runs through level H (twelveth grade). After finding this resource, I ordered a copy of each in the series. I plan to use these in preparing my older son for the SAT college exams.

An Excellent Learning Tool
As a foreign student who just started learning English 5 years ago, the verbal section is definitely my major obstacle to mastering the SAT. When I first took the PSAT, my verbal percentile was only a 49, but after working through all eight levels of Vocabulary Workshop (A through H) it has increased to a 99 (that was a year ago). Therefore I highly recommend this book to you (sincerely).

This book is a highly successful tool for guiding and stimulating systematic vocabulary growth for students. It has also been extremely valuable for preparing students to take the types of standardized vocabulary tests commonly used to assess grade placement, competence for graduation, and/or college readiness.

This book contains approximately 300 basic words, selected on the basis of currency in present-day usage, frequency on recognized vocabulary lists, applicability to standardized tests, and current grade-placement research.

The words in the book are organized into 15 short, stimulating units featuring pronunciation, parts of speech, definitions, synonyms, antonyms, and usage.

5 reviews (1 review for every 3 lessons) highlight and reinforce the work of the units through challenging exercises involving SAT-type critical-thinking exercises, definitions, synonyms, antonyms, analogies, sentence completions, word families...

4 accumulative reviews utilize standardized testing techniques to provide ongoing assessment of word mastery, all involving SAT-type critical-thinking.

Other features in this book include: a diagnostic test (which provides ready assessment of student needs at the outset of the term), a final mastery test (which provides end-of-term assessment of student achievement), word roots (which introduces the study of etymology)...

Pure crud.
I bought my home-schooled child all of these books and they didn't teach him a gosh-durned thing! Jerome Shostak needs to learn how to read before he writes a book on telling other people how to read. This was crud! Pure and simple! Read "Lizard Music" by Daniel Manus Pinkwater if you want a book that will teach you new words, and help you understand life and give you all the secrets to the world!

A Sesquepedalian's best friend
If you knew what the title to this review meant, or just wish you did, this is the kind of book you can buy and actually just read for fun; it's quite interesting. At least, if you're as big a dork as I am.

However, if I happen to have spelled that wrong and you neither noticed nor cared, then you're probably going to be pretty bored. And, quite frankly, that's pretty respectable in it's own right.

Useful Tool
I'm an older person (age 60) who bought this book (H) after seeing a more elementary book in the series that my niece was using for school. I've always loved words and have a good recognition vocabulary, but sometimes don't pronounce words correctly or don't know for sure how to use a word. Given that that was what I wanted, this book was perfect for me. The words were not easy--I would say that maybe half of them are not used in everyday conversation, but are occasionally seen in reading. A student who never reads will find this book quite difficult. A literate high school senior preparing for SATs will find it useful. And someone like me, who would like to transform occasionally seen, somewhat unfamiliar words into the material of his own writing and speech, will be pleased with this book.

Definitely Not The Best Guide
I bought this book because it has a nice layout and seemed to have all of the necessary facts on ABA-approved law schools. Having gone through the application process, I realize that this book falls flat on several levels. To start with, some of the data is incorrect. For example, almost all of the application fees listed are less that they actually are. Also, there is very little context about the schools. For example, what is a school known for? Is it a large, ultra competitive environment, does it pride itself on cooperation and close-knit atmosphere, or somewhere in-between? A prospective student can make assumptions from the data alone, but contextual information rounds out the data. Further, admissions are mostly made on GPA & LSAT scores but there are no grids or numerical breakdowns; there are only median values. My best advice is to go to the LSAC's website and review the online version of the "Official Guide to ABA-Approved Law Schools." This guide offers statistical data, school info, links to law schools, and data filtering tools so you can interactively track infomation relevant to you (e.g., your statistical chance of getting into a school based on your GPA & LSAT). Overall, it has a lot more to offer than the Barron's Guide.

Very detailed
Barron's Guide to Law School has become like my bible. I take it with me everywhere and could look at it for hours on end. I just recently decided that law school is definately for me, and this book has helped tremendously. It contains many details about each school, things you may not even really care about. It also contains a sample LSAT test which is very helpful. The book also lists schools by region and maps them so you know exactly where each school is, and so if you know you want to go to school in a certain region, you can find out what schools are nearby. This book is a must for anyone considering law school.

Essential!
I simply can't imagine trying to navigate the law school selection and application process without this book. It would be a bargain at several times the listed price.

To summarize the contents, it contains EVERYTHING.

Vocabulary Dorkshop
This book was pitiful. It didn't teach my kid a thing! It was sad. I feel that whoever created this monstrosity of a so-called "Vocabulary Book" needs to reconsider his writing skills and consult me. I'm going to write my own book "Vocab Wonders!" coming soon in late 2003. This is horrible. Bye Bye

It stinks
This book did not benifit my child at all, I do not know how anyone can say that it helps. My child was so bored with it she did not pay any attention to the words, she was just set on getting it done. I talked to the local principal at my community school, and he said that he tryed using, but the children were just not able to apply themselves, and like my daughter were just set on getting it done. Half of the kids would not even do it themselves, they would copy off of each other.

Good books that are straightforward.
My high school used these books. I also found them tedious, but I was in high school and I found everything tedious. The practice of applying myself to something that was less entertaining than I wished was valuable and necessary. I would never have gotten very far in life, and would certainly never have been successful in college unless I learned the skills that these books emphasized: vocabulary, standardized testing skills, and practice concentrating and memorizing.

I do remember thinking back in high school that they actually worked. Each section uses the same week's vocabulary words in different sections that are used on the SAT, ACT, GRE and other standardized tests, such as synonyms, antonyms, and analogies (the hardest to me!) After each section, I actually remembered the meaning of every word because I'd used them in so many different ways.

I would recommend these books to other students. I also have to say that any mother who encourages her child to give up on completing these books is doing both their child and herself a great disservice. She will realize it when her child returns home to live with her as an adult after having failed at other things that are "boring".

A Excellent Vocabulary Workbook
This is an excellent book to improve your vocabulary skills. Excercises include analogy, synonyms, antonyms, sentence completion... An excellent tool to prepare you for the SAT verbal.
