provides hope for all involved
Our daughter was lucky enough to have been treated by Drs. Thompson and Sherman and she was able to overcome this dreadful eating disorder. Even with their personal attention, we found their book was a wealth of information, advice and pure hope for all of us. If you can't speak directly with the authors, reading the book will certainly be of help on the road to a cure.

Read this and get help
This is a great book for a spouse or a fmaily member who wants to help. It details what is happening and what can be done. However, it is not a substitute for therapy. Please get help for your loved one immediately. There is hope.

Tremendous resource for family and friends.
I have 9 years of experience with bulimia of a family member and also teach others about eating disorders. This is a tremendous resource. It's very well written!

Good basic data
Sherman's book is a good introduction to the art of cigars. The glimpse into the history of one of NY's premier cigar establishments is especially interesting, and the graphics are good. On the downside, I think the author spends too much time promoting his own brands, and occasionally strays from the core subject.

Outstanding Work by Mr. Sherman
One would think that one of the world-renowned cigar makers/cigar shop owners would be snobbish and elitist. WRONG! Mr. Sherman writes like a true aristocrat, that is, without any snobbery or pretense. This is a very readable and useful guide I'd recommend to anyone who enjoys cigars or just wants to know more about them.

Knowledgeable, objective, easy to read. An excellent book.
This book covers the entire range of the cigar experience, from the history of cigar making, through the various countries that produce the best tobacco and cigars, through selection and care, to how to give a cigar dinner (with recipes!). I've given away two copies to friends and I'm ordering more.

Pushing Musical Limits
I have been playing music for the last 14 years in one form or another. I started out as a rock guitarist and am now producing experimental electronica. I bought this book about seven years ago, started reading it, then had to put it down. This book is NOT for beginners.

Along with "The Advancing Guitarist" by Mick Goodrick, this book is intended to push your musical boundaries. The emphasis is on orchestrated music, but I have found application in all the music I do and love. Sherman approaches music theory in an exciting, creative, and stimulating manner.

If you feel that your art is stagnating, buy this book. It will make you explore facets of music you never considered seeking out, and I guarantee a fascinating journey.

Almost all I needed to know
David Tietyens book is just what I wanted - a book about one of the most improtant things in Disney's movies - the music. The book contains pictures of the composers, background anecdotes about how the music were created, the role the songs played and much more. The only bad thing is, that it ends with Pete's Dragon, short after Walt's death. It would be nice with an updated version which covered the new movies (The Little Mermaid, Aladdin etc.)

Tales of the Velvet Comet
I am limiting myself to four stars because I have only now ordered this book; why then, might you ask am I expressing the audacity to review a book I am only now ordering? Because this title is a collection of four related novels of which I have only ever read the fourth, but that fourth entry alone is a stunner.

The final story deals with a musical choreographer sent to an abandoned deep space station in the far far future, and the space station had been a bordello. Such themes are dealt with as the life of the prostitues, the conflict of a writer who wants to tell the truth, a harsh one, but who is under contract to paint it over into a musical comedy and a computer learning to appreciate aesthetics.

As usual this work is written in Resnick's deceptively easy to follow style wherein one is not hit over the head with his often poignent themes but rather do they sneak up with subtly haunting impact on one who thinks he is merely enjoying a fluff piece.

If the first three selections in the series are weak, and I have no reason to think they are, this collection is still worth the price of admission for the final novel

Decent, but not as good as other books
This book takes each Disney animated movie, and analyzes it with the following subheadings: Original tale, Disney version, plot holes, bloopers, strange/critical reaction, attractions made, cutting room floor, and hidden images.

This book was more slow moving than his behind -the-scenes expose of Disneyland. If that's what you're looking for, purchase the Mouse Tales books. You won't find much interesting here. On the other hand, if you'd like to hear how the movies evolved, and enjoy uncovering hidden Disney images, this is a good book for you. You should be a fan of the animated movies to read this book, as there's little else here of interest.

It held my interest---but not by much.

Interesting glimpse behind the scenes of the masterpieces
I was surprised to find that Koenig's book details movies all the way up to Tarzan, and even hint at the future with the fact that "Treasure Planet" was planned long ago.
Filled with fascinating behind the scenes glimpses at the production of the movies, along with trivia notes and things to catch, this book makes watching the Disney Animated Features an extra special treat.
You'll learn about the missing songs from the classics, and just how Disneyland and WDW got their famous rides.

Recommended for the Disney phile- particularly those who want to study each film piece by piece now that most of them are available on video.

Entertaining Behind-The-Scenes Tales
This book presents a fascinating glimpse at the making of Disney's animated features, including story changes, bloopers, and theme park attraction tie-ins. My fiance and I are having a grand time looking for the bloopers cited for the various films (e.g., Gaston's disappearing and reappearing musket in "Beauty and the Beast"). I especially enjoyed seeing what original story lines were planned for each feature, and learning what scenes were removed because they didn't work. If you are a fan of Disney's work, you will doubtless enjoy learning how the films might have been different. Even some of the rides at Disneyland have changed in concept from their initial development due to changes in films. A very entertaining read indeed.

Maybe I'm not the right level of idiot
I bought this book because I wanted to develop a better understanding of the music I was hearing at concerts. I was disappointed. The authors spent so much effort trying to make the book interesting that they didn't include the information I was seeking. I can understand the wordplay in the section headings, but I got VERY tired of the "Bet You Didn't Know" sections with tidbits like "Salmonella was reputed to be such a wonderful piano player because he had two left hands." I tried to just skip them, but the remainder of the text assumed the reader had read those sections.

The music theory portion of the book - the part I wanted to understand the most - is only 13 pages and still left me lost. Some of it may be from oversimplification. One question I had - and still have - is the meaning of a piece described as being In C Major. The book states that this is "the basic tone on which the rest of music is constructed." I don't know if that means the most common note, the midpoint, or something else. Examples of specific works would go a long way to making this discussion more useful.

This book might be an amusing resource if you're looking for biographical trivia about composers, singers, or performers. But I would not recommend it for someone struggling to understand the music.

For a few dollars more, buy Classical Music for Dummies
This book is not bad at all. It may deserve 4 stars had I never read Classical Music for Dummies. A book on classical music ought to come with a sample CD. This one doesn't. And you won't know what you miss until you get the other book.

Excellent for those who find classical intimidating
Ironically, I took up violin when I was four (like so many Asian kids) but gave it up after 13 years of continuous practice. Recently I realized that even though I could still play, I did not know much about classical music as a genre! So I bought this book and found it very informative. Let me just say that (after checking with my music history professor) everything you need to know about classical music is here, explained in a friendly and clear way. You'll learn how to appreciate classical music as well as who-is-who in the field.

Now, would someone care to write a "complete idiot's guide to Chinese music"? :)
