Fluff That Makes You Feel Good
Books like this do everything in their power to get your drive going. And every time I read one (which isn't often), I do feel good about myself. But in the end, I'm back on Earth a few days later. OK, I am sounding pathetic, but the truth is, there isn't a whole lot of practical advice here, just motivational anecdotes. To be frank, there is nothing wrong with that. It just needs more to distinguish itself.

It starts out promising with the part about choosing the characteristics you most want in a job. However, it goes downhill with the straight out of "Touch By an Angel" cabbie stories that start every chapter. What I really did like about this book is that it makes you reevaluate the situation you are currently in to make the most of it. It doesn't preach dropping everything and chasing after your dream because not all of us are in a position to do so. Another thing I liked is that it keeps the message short (under 200 pages). There is no need for a book like this to be 300+ pages. All in all, it's a good starter book for those looking to make a career change.

To question your careeer, this i a must read
Get control of your career and your expectations of what career means in your life. This book does a great job of guiding you along as you question wehre you are in life and where you want to be. Redundant at times and interactive "take control books" usually don't appeal to me, but this one is an expection.

More Helpful Advice from Dick Leider
Leider and Shapiro have done it again, writing a book that speaks to a crucial issue in many people's lives. "What do I want to be when I grow up" is a question many of us are asking, at an age when one would think the question had been long answered. Like all of Dick Leider's books, this one is a very pleasant and calming read, filled with interesting stories and sound advice. Whistle While You Work, in combination with the Calling Cards, can give great insight for each individual into what type of work would be most rewarding, and what work environment most suitable. This is a very informative book.

A very good book on Maui.
We just returned from Maui, having taken the family there for 8 days. We also took 3 guide books, so I was able to compare all three books in real time while on the island. We disliked Fodor's book, but found Frommer's to be very good.

The information is well-organized, up-to-date, and very helpful while on the island. But the best of the tour books was: "Maui and Lana'i : Making the Most of Your Family Vacation (8th Ed)" by Early and Stilson. This is the book I recommend.

Maui
This book has a great clor map and online travel directory.

AWESOME! A must have book if you're traveling to Maui.
Traveled to Maui for our Honeymoon in January 1999...the Frommers 1999 Maui guide gave us the scoop on the entire island. Because of this book we learned all about the hidden waterfalls and took pictures of awesome "off the beaten path" paradise spots on the road to Hana. We now buy Frommers books for all of our vacations!

Middle aged Ladies Traveling Alone
I took your book all over Europe. I found it very helpfull untill we got to Paris. I didn't realize that there were so many train stations around Paris and that so few people spoke English. The information desk was closed and we didn't know that the subway stops were listed by the last stop. We came out of the metro near the latin quarter and had a nice tour of Paris on the red buses for a very good rate. Also people traveling to Milan must know that using the hotel registry is a joke. I got a much better deal at the tourist desk at the train station!

Very good for planning
This guide is as deep as a guide about the whole Europe can be. It presents many tips and brief information about the countries, like main attractions, hotels, restaurants and transport. Be careful, you won't find many eastern European countries here. If you're going to use it for planning it's excelent. You'll find web sites, prices and a rail map, but not a road map, to help you. It's a little bit heavy to carry around, and almost not illustrated. The attractions are ranked so you can imagine what worth a visit.

Essential for your European vacation
A great overview on Europe and provides the essential information on getting around, what to see, where to stay and where to eat. I've just returned from my first trip to Europe and found the information very useful, relevant and up to date. Definately pack this one!

Keeping it real
Out of the numerous books I've read and movies I've seen about Vietnam, this is the only Vietnam story that I actually believed; that I felt captured what it was really like to be there. Michael Shapiro's story is not overly sensationalized, dramatized or distorted but accurately captures the feeling of the times and the experiences of the men in battle.

Bought extra copies
"I liked Fields of Fire so much I bought two extra copies to give as gifts to my sister and to a friend. I didn't serve in Vietnam but Shapiro let me feel what it was like to be there during that time. I could almost smell the odors and feel the heat. I have a lot more respect for those guys who were in Nam than I did before reading Fields of Fire." -- Michael Ireland

Brilliant Novel!
Paul Gebhart quits college in his sophmore year to volunteer for Vietnam. But he soon realizes 'I was an idiot. I had volunteered for the draft to prove my manhood to the guys in the neighborhood. It was a stupid thing to do, but I couldn't help it. I was raised on war movies; God, Glory and Victory at Sea.'

Based on his real-life experiences as an infantryman in Vietnam, Michael Shapiro has written an outstanding novel, conveying so accurately the particular experience of Americans fighting a futile war. Shapiro captures the sights, sounds, and ironies of the Vietnam War with force and humorous authenticity.

"Fields of Fire" is a great book from the first page to the last paragraph: 'Despite the loneliness, I felt satisfied. God had saved me to write about the men and times from that year's tour of duty. I had fulfilled my destiny, and in my heart I felt a quiet peace, like a balmy Vietnamese evening.'

This brilliant novel would be a terrific war movie!

The problem with only using advocates is you get one side of
The problem with using advoates as authors is that you only get one side of the story. In the case of EMDR, for instance, there is research that says a) the eye movements are unnecessary and b) its effects do not last as long as Cognitive-Behavior Therapy based exposure procedures. This really undercuts the second part of the title of this book "for Long-Term Change". Stories and anecdotes are often entertaining but for true treatment help see a professional who reads the scientific research and is not a cheerleader for every fad that comes along.

The Science of Dynamic Psychotherapy
I found this book to be a remarkable and consise description of a complicated topic. The authors summarized the state of the field of short term dynamic therapy. They held no information back and identified the areas of controversy, particularly conflicting opinions and data on the use of confrontation in the Davanloo approach versus the approach preferred by McCullough and Alpert. Furthermore, the inclusion of EMDR as a dynamic treatment was inovative and exciting. Neborsky and Solomon's chapter on "Changing the Love Imprint" explained how EMDR and the STDP's may have a common therapeutic action, which was helpful to me as was their integration of attachment theory. Finally, David Malan's chapter on the science of outcome evaluation and what we might learn from his career was an inspiration to read. I hope this group continues to write and create more material for clinicians like this!

Best Available Overview
The recent no-name reviewer from Atlanta who attacked Short-Term Therapy for Long-Term Change's lack of research must have bought some bootleg copy that omitted its hundreds of endnotes and citations. Its dozens of pages of transcribed therapy sessions will hardly be dismissed as "anecdotes" by any mindful reader. The book's six contributors are tops in their fields. Calling them "cheerleaders," as no-name does, is a whooper bordering on delusion. This book is the best available overview of the latest breakthroughs in short-term psychotherapy available.

Wonderful for Travel in the USA
I drove from coast to coast using this book and an road map atlas. It was of great help. My only complaint is that there were very few maps in the book. If you are planning a road trip, then don't count on this book as an atlas. Regardless of that, this book has almost everything you need, phone numbers, directions, descriptions, and a long list of places to stay. It's well worth it.

pretty good
Since I am planing to go to road trip in this summer, I went through a lot of travel books across america. This is the best one out there. It not only includes hot spots in all over the usa, but also has a detail rates in hotels and motels. I love it. I am sure I will have a great time with this book handy!

Quick & exciting, one could fall in love w/a man like Nick.
Mr. Lechtman gives the reader a peek into the "changing of the guard" from older & standard to younger & twisted. A sad but most often true commentary of the legal profession. I am looking forward to the sequel. Is there the possibility of Short Stories on the horizon? A talent like Mr. Lechtman's should not be wasted. A good read.

Relaxing reading with a good plot
Good understanding of legal procedures and has many laughs.

Civilization and Violence: Regimes of Representation in Nineteenth-Century Colombia (Borderlines, Vol 19 (Cloth))
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Minnesota Pr (Txt) (2001)
Authors: Cristina Rojas and Michael J. Shapiro
Amazon base price: $59.95
Average review score:

Deep, intellectual and profound
Scholar Cristina Rojas is not afraid of challenges. She takes on an explosive subject and attempts to reshape traditional thinking. Moreover, she is not reluctant to point to weak assumptions by other scholars or to excuse local political or economic elites of liability. Ultimately, "Civilization and Violence," is a clinical examination of nineteenth-century regimes of representation in order to explain the long pattern of conflict within the borders of Colombia.

By no means is this a knock on this fine work but it is important to note that the language throughout this text is excessively highbrow. Rojas is a brilliant scholar but writes this study for the exclusive benefit of the academic community. Consequently, journalistic readers be warned...there is little pragmatic flow in the language of the analysis. Nevertheless, this is a valuable book. Rojas painstakingly connects many valuable theories in helping explain the complex relationship between civilization and violence. She also documents how domination by local hierarchies result in "hate dynamics" that has set "the battle lines" of the future.

A Solid Effort!
This book is directed to those who want to unburden and redefine their lives. Authors Richard J. Leider and David A. Shapiro encourage readers to re-evaluate their daily lives: relationships, work places, home, and purpose. They present their suggestions for the metaphorical "unpacking and repacking" of life's excess "baggage" in an easy-to-read, sensitive, and even humorous way. Suggestions and exercises encourage you to reexamine what is truly important. Though sometimes redundant, they provide encouraging, thought-provoking material. Reading this book may cause you to have a mid-life crisis "on purpose" and begin to live like Thoreau, "deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life." We [...] recommend this book for those who want to simplify their lives and reassess their priorities.

Generally helpful, but very couple-oriented
This book is a pleasant, amusing, readable way of addressing the major issues that confront one at midlife: Am I living a life that accords with my values, ideals, and talents? If not, what specifically needs to be changed so I can achieve this? I found the "unpacking" metaphor especially appealing because (as an ardent traveler) I well know the real-life value of traveling light; it was rather astonishing to me to discover how much of a pack rat I've been in other aspects of my life! On the other hand, as a single person with many friends but no life partner (and no desire for one), I found that the authors' couple orientation rendered many of the exercises virtually useless for me. I agree that love is an important part of a full, satisfying life, but defining love as marriage, or the equivalent, seems ridiculously confining! Otherwise, the book is a pleasure to read, and most of the exercises gave me useful insights, so I recommend it with reservations.

Truly one of the best books I've ever read.
This book is a must for every mid-lifer wondering where you've been and what direction you'd like to take for the second half of your life.

Traveling to Quebec? Don't forget your guide.
As many Frommer's traveling books, this one will help the reader to get along the city and take advantage of his travel. Having this book handy in your backpack will make your walking tours, dinning and staying a truly unforgettable experience. It is amazing how it describes to the detail many places that no other way you would consider visiting. Even though Frommer's is a guarantee istelf, consider buying a better city map to get along, since the one in the book is a little confusing and incomplete.

A great help in enjoying two wonderful Canadian cities
In preparing for a trip to Montreal and Quebec, I was pleasantly surprised to find a book that covered both cities. It was easy to read and find specific information. The different maps were very helpful while walking around both cities -- although I used actual road maps for driving directions. Keeping in mind that having two cities means less information about each -- I found the information was the right amount to help us make important decisions or ask the right questions when we made reservations. It certainly will help you find the "must see" spots as it provides recommendations for a one-, two- or three-day visit. I often read the short description of a site aloud before we visited. We changed our hotel reservations based on the book. As a result, we saved $10 per night (which more than paid for the book) and got free meals for the children -- a huge savings over three days. Bottomline -- a good, easy-to-use book with valuable information -- especially for first or second time visitors.

Frommer's Montreal & Quebec City
Good overall book. It is very accurate and a good starting point for a new traveller to the city. The only problem w/ a book like Frommer's is that 10,000 other people have the same book. You tend to see the same kind of crowd if you follow thier recommendations as the people who buy the book. Nevertheless, it is a very good informative guide for what it is and should be bought by any 1st time visiter to Montreal and Quebec.
