A thoughtful and convincingly written account
Collaboratively researched and written by linquists and University of Washington professors Michael Brame and Galina Popova, by Shakespeare's Fingerprints is a compelling discourse defending the idea that the name "William Shakespeare" was in fact a pseudonym. The real author behind the classic plays of genius may have been Edward de Vere (the 17th Earl of Oxford), or someone else, according to carefully reasoned and supported theories. A thoughtful and convincingly written account, Shakespeare's Fingerprints is a welcome addition to the growing body of Shakespearian literature seeking to determine the correct identity of the author who produced some of the finest work extent in the history of English literature.

Italian-American cooking at its best!!!
I had been interested in obtaining an Italian cookbook for sometime however I could never seem to find one containing recipes I was both familiar with or interested in. If you are interested in "Americanized" Italian cooking then this book is for you. If you are interested in authenic recipes from Italy, you may want to keep looking. While the authors do comment in several places on the differences between a certain recipe's composition in Italy versus the US, the book contains mainly recipes that have evolved under American influences.

This book is great for several reasons. It begins with a chapter describing the ingredients used in the recipes--the section on the different types of cheeses in Italian cooking was particularly helpful. Recipes contain the proper pronouniciation of Italian words (and their definitions) as well as a suggested wine to complement the flavors in each dish. The recipes often contain helpful hints, the origin/history of the dish, and possible variations. Also, there are several inserts describing the history of Italian-Americans in the US (with old photos included)for the history buffs. The lemon chicken and the spaghetti with green tomatoes are excellent recipes--I'm looking forward to trying others.

The one negative thing I can say is there are no pictures of the finished recipes. It is always nice to have something to compare your masterpiece with to make sure you are on the right track.

Highly Recomended
This book is wonderfull! It contains a recipie for every classic Italian dish you can think of and is very straight forward with all of the ingrediants being easy to find. I have tried about 20 recipies from it and every one worked incredibly well. Especially try the Chicken Parmisean which is so much better than the soggy overcooked mess you get at Olive Garden.

A great cookbook, but so much more than that!
This is the Italian cookbook I have been looking for. But in addition to the incredible recipes, this book offers a fascinating exploration of Italian-American immigrant culture. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading it and trying the recipes.

This book is perfect for second or third generation Italian-Americans who wish they had paid a little more attention to how their Italian mothers and grandmothers cooked. We all know they didn't use recipes. But the authors have captured the recipes for us, and offer just about every home-style traditonal recipe you can remember.

In addition, the book offers some non-traditional but popular recipes, such as tiramasu. No matter what you're looking for in Italian cooking-- whether homestyle or more elegant dining --you will find it here.

The quality of the recipes I have tried so far is outstanding. The first thing I made was the classic Italian-American favorite, pasta e fagiole. It was heavenly and delightfully simple to prepare.

Enjoy!

Moscow Days: Life and Hard Times in the New Russia

Interesting, alarming, important
We have heard of the crisis in Russia for many years; however, like most tragedies of great magnitude, this situation is difficult to truly imagine. "Moscow Days" provides tangible descriptions of the plight of everyday Russians to which the average western reader can relate. It brings the impact of the dissolution of the Soviet system, and the unleashing of unrestained "capitalism" down to a quotidian level. Reading this book provided me with a greater appreciation of the ramifications of the economic and political crisis confronting Russia as well as, paradoxically, an understanding of how people are surviving the midst of this castastrophe.

While the above probably makes this book sound like a depressing reading experience the author's sardonic wit, and often mordant humor, makes this a palatable learning experience. Dutkina leaves you with a tremendous amount of respect for the resiliance of the Russian people and their stoic response to an ever changing situation which they find themselves largely impotent to affect.

I found this book reminiscent of the Croatian author,Slavenka Drakulic's works "How We Survived Communism and Even Laughed" and "Balkan Days". While bright and witty, unfortunately Galina Dutkina does not have the literary prowess of Drakulic. Nevertheless, this is a worthwhile and important read, particularly in light of how ignorant the average American is of the devastation confronting the Russian people.

Thanks to Ms. Dutkina for stalwart honesty
I empathize with her constant fear of the crimes of the many against ordinary citizens. It could not have been easy for Ms. Dutkina to be so open about the problems in Moscow these days and to write with such intelligent restraint that the book provides important albeit unpleasant information without demonizing the Russian people or becoming pedantic.

Through a Glass darkly
A fantastic eloquently written account of contemporary Moscow that also manages to convey the psyche of ordinary muscovites far more perceptively than anything that I have ever read. It's like being hit by a brick. Breathtaking and achingly painful in its delivery it makes incredible reading.

Living and working as an expat in Moscow it opened to me a completely different way of viewing Russia. Maybe I was blinkered, but I owe a great debt to the author for showing me what I should have been seeing with my eyes and ears every day of the week but filtered by my western upbringing refused to see and refused to hear.

I can't recommend this book highly enough (Catherine A. Fitzpatricks translation is exceptional).

A great place to start if you want to learn abou Nicholas.
This book provides a lush pictoral history of the last tsar of Russia and his family. Little known objects that belonged to the Romonov's and their private letters and pictures make their world come alive like no other book.

a timely reference to a tragic story.
This book is published to be the exhibition catalogue to "NICHOLAS AND ALEXANDRA,THE LAST IMPERIAL FAMILY OF TSARIST RUSSIA" the wonderful exhibition that ran in Wilmington,De.from August 1998 thru February of this year. It is a must buy for those who want(ed ) to see the show but unable to attend. It catalogues more than 700 artifacts fom the Hermitage in St.Petersburg and the State National Archives in Moscow. Some of the documents from Moscow wre made public for the first time for the exhibition and shed new light on the lfe and demise of the last Romanov family. Readers of this book will want to see the exhibition and have maybe one more chance. It is currently showing in Mobile Al. thru November of this year. The book helps define a pivotal moment in our history by depicting the central character and his vulnerable family and it will help both the scholar and the interested regular 'joe' grasp the poignancy of the story with many hundreds of great photos and very rich informed text.

poignant and exquisite details of a vanished world
This book is one of my treasures, and a must for anyone wishing to know more about the lost world of Tsar Nicholas and Alexandra. From menus of the coronation supper to artifacts found after the murders at Ekaterinburg, the life of the last Imperial family is presented in rich and poignant detail. The notes are also extremely well written, adding to the pleasure of this book.

I have to Disagree
After purchasing this book a year ago, I am about 400 pages in and totally frustrated. It is like a collection of white papers about ATM theory. Sure, good info, but I want to know how to IMPLEMENT and design ATM networks. The writing style is awful -ex. "the partner agrees on this, that, and the other stuff" (pg. 140). The English usage is suspect at best, leaving the reader with impression that a number of writers had their hands on this one, and that many had English as a second language. While there is some good info in here, as well as some lab exercises, a solid, well-written book on ATM has yet to appear. After about 500 pages of this, you won't even consider putting this technology into your WAN -it comes accross as an administrative nightmare, obtuse, arcane, and altogether incomprehensible.

Almost there !!
Nicely written & very informative.Though I was left with a lot of knowledge of the terms / build up of ATM ... I just did not get a real good enough 'grip' on this subject by reading this book !! Considering the reviews that this book already has from other readers, I'm sure I must be just the exception !!

A solid book on ATM & its implementation on Cisco equipment
In 1997 I found myself configuring an ATM/SONET based WAN, with no documentation to turn to other than forum White Papers. What I would have given for this book then!

Having read a number of ATM books now, I can say that this is one of the better ones. The writing is relatively clear, and it moves quickly from topic to topic. In addition to the 560+ pages of core text, the book has hundreds of pages of lab exercises and with detailed solutions, and a thick glossary.

On the whole this book isn't so golden that I would rank it among the crown jewels of Cisco Press (i.e. the Routing TCP/IP series) but it is a solid book, and covers precisely what the title suggests that it does. If you had to read just ONE book on ATM, you could do worse than to pick this one.

Gossamer Webs: The History and Techniques of Orenburg Lace Shawls

Shawls that weigh 80 grams and look like fairy wings
There are directions here to knit Orenburg-style shawls, but unless you are an experienced knitter, you may find that the instructions are a bit frustrating. Orenburg shawls look a lot like Shetland cobweb lace shawls (but which came first? Orenburg shawls are mentioned in writing at least back to the beginning of the 18th Century.) The technique starts with an edging, then corners are turned and the body of the lace shawl is knitted together with the side edging.

The best part of this book is the history and story of the life of the Orenburg knitters, who even today support their families by knitting gorgeous works of art out of handspun silky mohair yarn. This book is a must if you are a lace knitter.

great, but sometimes stumbles
My problem with the book is pretty small. For the most part I think it is a very beautiful and special book. The shawls are beautiful and the text is interesting. My only problem is that the instructions for the full-size shawl are a little iffy in points, like telling you to knit in the "corner stitch" without once ever explaining this maneuver. Mostly a beautiful book, though

A beautiful introduction to a neglected regional craft
While all lace knitters are familiar with Shetland lace, this book will take you to less familiar territory and introduce you to women who have been carrying on the tradition of glorious lace for a few hundred years.

While as much an introduction to the microculture of Orenburg knitters than a "how-to", the authors nevertheless succeed in stirring the creative juices with page after page of pictures of absolutely gorgeous shawls. Some directions are written out, some are in chart form. Recommended for the experienced lace knitter.

Overall a wonderful text for guided- or self- study!
I studied Russian in some capacity for almost 5 years now. As a russophile one runs into many text that offer little explanation to make this complex language more easily understood. This book is certainly not one of them! The Grammar review sections are perfect whether you are advancing your study by yourself, or you are reviewing for a test in a class. The vocablary sections are complete and well organized. This the second Golosa book focuses even more on authentic texts than the first volume. My only complaints include: the glossary--it is not a complete enough to serve as a useful tool; the cultural sections--on rare occasion are not complete enough to avoid broad generalizations; and the illustrations are childlike and not always clear. Nonetheless, this is a text that must be included in every Russian language student's reference library!

This is NOT a workbook!
This is NOT, as the listing implies, a workbook to accompany the text book "Introductory Russian Grammar." It is a laboratory manual to accompany the tape set. If you are working with the tapes, then this very small (42 pages, 8.5" X 5.5" format) manual might be of some use, but if you are working primarily from the book, it will not give you anything you don't already have in the text.
