Emperors of Chocolate
In the book, the Emperors of Chocolate, by Joel Glenn Brenner, the author shares her intimate interviews with countless executives and factory workers of the biggest candy companies of the world. She gives us a look into the humble beginnings of Milton Hershey and Forest Mars Sr. The emperors of the chocolate empires of Hershey and Mars. Brenner also gives us the delicious details of their first product on some of which their was collaboration, and the devilishly tasty "Chocolate Wars" in which the candy giants competed for the U.S. market like chocoholics would for chocolate. This book is definitely "nutritious" with amazing and neurotic characters and intriguing stories that will keep you wanting more. I would definitely give it a two thumbs up!

The Structure of Power in America: The Corporate Elite As a Ruling Class

A seriously neglected topic
The book takes a trenchant look at a seriously neglected topic - the question of who actually governs the US. Since this question impacts directly on all other matters facing the US, it is a topic that should be of prime concern; that it gets so little attention is a real worry. The book reflects the need for a vital American left to provide a genuine criticism and coherent opposition to non-democratic developments in the US. Perhaps unavoidably the book is little patchy. This reflects the fact that it is an edited collection, but also underlines the problem of reasearch in this area - so much real governance activity is done in secret and therefore not open to sustained research and analysis. I hope the authors are working on an updated version.

Who is this book for?
I purchased a copy of this book because I've been buying nearly all of Lynn Margulis's books in preparation for teaching a course. The description here was minimal, and I wanted to warn other potential buyers -- this is basically a coloring book. The weird thing is that the concepts and vocabulary are at a first-year college or advanced high school level. I can't imagine just who is supposed to use this book, sixth grade geniuses with crayons, or easily amused college freshmen? I suppose if you have a really bright grade school class you might want to give this book a try, but in my judgement it's not at the right level for anyone, anywhere.

DIVERSITY OF LIFE. The Illustrated Guide to the Five Kingdom
DIVERSITY has surprising success in being all things (well almost all) to all people. It's about equally divided between fact-packed technical writing, full of Latin names, and line drawings of them. The intro is convincingly authoritative. And TEN pages of further resources are provided.

At first, I thought this is not a book for me, a novice, But Latin names are coupled with common ones. The fifty-page glossary is nicely written in everyday language. And the line drawings are tantalising. I am invited to color the drawings!

The cover shows the beauty of color and design that the authors contemplate. Spiral binding lies flat for coloring. I wonder what medium works best. Colored pencils? How would the paper take to water color or acryllic? The authors urge me to photocopy the drawings. I might enlarge one, use good art paper and create something worth framing!

There's no clue as to what colors are right. Shall I create my own color scheme, or go to the zoo or a swamp for real-life colors? I think fantasy will be more fun.

DIVERSITY does assume some knowledge of biology. I'd call it an expansion of knowledge for those who like knowledge for its own sake, and certainly a well-organized reference book. It could also work as a student-friendly text for a sophisticated high school or beginning college level classroom.

Just learning that there are five kingdoms staggered me because I studied biology before 1960, when there were just two. The animal Kigdom is now "animalia" and the vegetable kingdom is now "plantae." Modern biologists distinguish bacteria and fungi as numbers three and four. The fifth is really unnerving: something called Protoctista -- very close to the medical words that start out Procto --.

This adds up to more diversity of life than I've ever thought about.

On page 21 I find the first creative drawing/learning project: two cows in a field. One has its digestive tract outlined, with magnified drawings of six kinds of bacteria that populate its gut. Further along I find a pretty little drawing of the notorious E. coli. schematically resident in a fisherman's stomach. What wonderful colors shall I choose?

I think I shall use DIVERSITY as my Field Guide to the Minuscule as I color with my grandchildren. And somewhere I will find out what a Proctoct-- really is.

This is THE book about Hot Wheels
I found the third edition to be an improvement over the second edition in terms of the prices of cars listed, but still off in many instances. As a price guide, it allows the reader to see the relation of different colors and variations to others, but the prices themselves are not, and cannot be expected to be, current. If it takes about a year to revise and publish a book, how can that price guide have "current values" in it? Before criticizing this book, and it's author, I think Hot Wheels collectors should consider the huge effort of time and organization in producing a book of this type. It is a massive undertaking. As a general guide to the world of Hot Wheels, this stands as a great example of a fairly complete, authoritative manual to this ever-changing, (usually appreciating) toy collectible. No matter how you slice it, this is THE Book for Hot Wheels collectors. I like the layout, the photos, and the historical information that introduces the book. As a collector I am intrigued by the history of this legendary toy brand! It is easy to criticize, but I'd like to ask the collectors that are overly critical of this book: "How knowledgable would you be WITHOUT the Tomart guide?"

Tomarts 5th
This book is loaded with valuable information. Lots of pictures & needed specs, but as in previous editions, the incomplete index leaves much to be desired, and the pricing is out of this world. However, that said, it is a great addition to a collectors library.

Hot Wheels guide probably indispensable
I have an interest in older Hot Wheels, and was looking for values and prices. This is the only book that differentiates between the various colors of the early cars, and those colors make all the difference in value. As a result this book is almost indispensable. The color guide itself is only so-so, being particularly difficult to match up with some of the brighter colors. There were so many shades that sometimes the guide is only so-so too. But since this is the only book that even bothers to attempt to divide the cars by color, this is the one to get.

Family Therapy: Concepts and Methods

Confusing and convoluted....
If you can, pick a different family theory book. No, the information provided in this book is not difficult to grasp but the book rambles, repeats itself, and is frustrating to slog through. It seems as if the two authors decided who would write what chapter and then found themselves repeating each other. A good editing would cut the book by half. Goldenberg and Goldenberg would be a better choice or try Family Counseling and Therapy by Arthur Horne.

wonderful book
This book is a well thought out book with basic introductions to family therapy, as well as different theories, as well as case studies. This was the first book I bought about family therapy and I have been using it as a reference for the past year. This book is not too expensive, and will be a book the you will use throughout your entire therapy coursework.

A Very Comprehensive and Thoughtful Text on Family Therapy
I have tried several books on family therapy as texts for my graduate course on Family and Couple therapy. This book is superior to other books that I have tried. The authors explain theoretical positions clearly and most importantly organize this vast area of social science into a well-organized discussion that is interesting and easy to follow. It is a serious text rather than convoluted and I'm thankful a text such as this for my students. Dr. Deborah Khoshaba

The waterworld of New Rider's books.
After using New Rider's Inside Lightwave 3D, I was looking forward to the same kind of quality and thoroughness. It comes as a surprise that the editor of this piece is an employee of ktx, because the book completely lacks the elegance and intuitiveness of 3d studio max. Step by step procedures were confusing, and minimal. So why bother at all? FYI you writers could have written what you did in paragraphs like 95% if the book - why bother using numbered lists? For example, the LOFT example was better and more simply explained in Visual Quickstart Guide, in about just as few words . In fact many of the modelling techniques are better explained in other MAX books. This is for advanced animators (?) written obscurely by advanced animators, with a lot of the information you can find in other general animation books, or the kinetix manuals themselves(dah!). It's a real tome, but not useful for the intermediate user, and covers a lot of modelling techniques I've read about in maya and lightwave books. Not sure who they targeted this book for, but for the someone who's trying to LEARN (isn't that what books are for?), it's darn near useless. Try other books, take classes, or buy some videos. I wasted my money.

Best Reference
well, ive been a max user for a couple of years, learning from tutorials on the internet and of course from my own experience on the software. its been for awhile that im lookin for a very concise reference book (not really a tutorial stuff since ive been modeling already organic forms) inorder for me to get more of what the software is capable of, and i found that this book (which wont really tell the best techniques) gives more details on its capabilities and the functions explaining the inside stuff of max. Well if ur looking for a tutorial, then this book is definetly not for u...its a good book to read and a best reference material if you want to know whats really inside 3d max 3..(just a reminder:its not a tutorial book) MABUHI ANG SUGBU!
