A heavy-duty FrontPage reference!
Lots of FrontPage to choose from and it's not always easy to decide which to spend your hard earned cash on. This book however is definitely worth considering. I have been using FrontPage for quite some time and am very familiar with it, yet I still have questions and when I do I use this book to answer them. This book has shown me so much like how to create advanced pages without writing any code. I'm learning to do things I thought I'd never be able to do! This is the perfect reference for creating web pages, image maps, forms, frames and lots of other cool stuff

EVERYTHING you ever wanted to know about FrontPage 97!
If there's an annual award for best computer book, this book deserves not only to be nominated but to WIN! This book covers every FrontPage publishing and design topic you can think of. Everything in the book is easy to follow and understand yet at the same time authoritative and enlightening, making the book perfect for beginners and experts alike.

Stanek firmly establishes himself as the leading voice in innovative Web publishing and design. His book is a 1200-page masterpiece that you'll want next to your computer ALWAYS. I bought 2 copies, 1 for home and 1 the office.

No doubt about it, this is THE best guide to Frontpage 97!
As a LAN Administrator, I rely on great books like this one to help me get the job done. In February, I purchased this book and used it to help me set up our Intranet--I did such a bang up job I moved from a temp/consulting position to full-time. Stanek doesn't miss a beat! Everything he says is gospel!

In the early days of the Intranet set up, I relied heavily on the core chapters written by Stanek to help me learn FrontPage basics. As the days progressed, the book helped me move to more and more advanced topics. I even used this book to help me create my own WebBots and Wizards--something I NEVER thought I could do on my own.

When I contacted Mr. Stanek to thank him for writing such a wonderful book, he suggested I place a "brief note" at Amazon.Com so others could see how much the book truly helped. Well, I didn't think brief would cut it....this is really a wonderful book and everyone should know about it. In fact, anyone that publishes on the Web regardless of their experience level should get this book!

Small Book, but Lots of Info
This is obviously a shortened version of administration of Exchange 2000, but the information seems to have been selected to help get exchange up and running quickly. I was just planning on programming for Exchange, but needed to get it running first. I learned more in half a day from this book than I did from days of searching newsgroups and sites on the web. This book explains in step-by-step instructions how to perform daily task such as adding users, mailboxes, and security setup.....

Excellent for what it is
This is excellent when used for quick reference and only for the experienced and knowledgeable. This is inappropriate for beginners since Exchange is intertwined with Active Directory. Without knowing all the implications of performing the various tasks outlined in the book, it can be detrimental to a company.

Handy reference no Exchange Administrator should be without
Clear. Concise. Encyclopedic in scope. This "Pocket" book is designed to serve as a reference checklist for common and not so common procedural tasks. Utilizing this reference, most folk will be able to get Exchange up and running smoothly in minimum time. As with most of his other "Pocket" references, Mr. Stanek does a very thorough job of documenting tasks in a highly organized manner. You will get more out of this book in a few days than you will combing the newsgroups for months. I keep this book in my ready bag at all times so as to have it always at hand. This is a book you will find yourself referring to on a daily basis. With Amazon dropping the price by 30%, it is a deal that cannot be beat! I highly recommend it.

This book is useful but...
I'm not sure what the problem is with its O'Reilly counterpart which was mentioned in another review. I use other books by both authors and they all serve me well. In this book I really like the listings by name and by task, and that I don't need stronger glasses to read it. But I find the Frisch book more useful. It's half the price, has more commands, and labels the resource kit commands. It's organized into task types, and generally the information in the book is considerably more useful in an admin setting.

Well organized, easy to use, good details!
I've been looking for a Windows 2000 reference for awhile. The O'Reilly Pocket Reference wasn't very useful, in fact that book was pretty useless. I was glad when I found this book. The Essential Windows 2000 Commands Ref is very easy to use and it has a great organization that makes looking up anything a snap. I also liked the way the book lists command usage and it was a hallaluyah moment when I found I was able to set the book on the desk top and still read everything-- no squinting to see tiny print or wondering what the heck the code examples said.

Helpful...I like it!
Good commands reference. I use this often. I like that you can put the book on the desk and still read without squinting. I think most anyone that works with Windows 2000 will find something in this book worthwhile.

The BEST Web Publishing & Design Book!
I've no doubt that this is the best web publishing and design book ever written. Stanek covers every subject you can think of in wonderful detail. Definitely one of the all time great computer books. Don't just get one copy, get several and give them to your friends

Wonderfully helpful and filled with insightful tips!
I bought this book a few months ago and now have every single book by this author on my bookshelf. If the author can show me how to create and publish a cool Web page, he can help anyone! This book truly made the difference.

Reads well and still extremely useful!
Stanek had a remarkable vision for the future of the Web when he wrote this book. He covered material in the book that was well ahead of its time when the book was published and the Web is just now catching up with where he was back in 1996. He talked about HTML 3.0 and its features at great length. These same exact features are now a part of the new HTML. He talked about advanced table models. The table models are now fully supported and on the cutting-edge of today's Web design.

Because of great foresight on Stanek's part, the book hasn't lost its luster. It still shines like a new dime and I rely on it to help me create cutting-edge Web sites time after time. You won't find another book like this one. I guarantee it. - CM

I thought this was a very good book!
Definitely the book to get if you want to learn about Netscape technologies. I haven't seen another book that discusses any of the Netscape technologies as well! The two best areas of the book are the JavaScript sections (client-side JavaScript and server-side LiveWire).

Stanek pulls out all the stops in helping readers understand advanced development concepts with JavaScript. There's tons of useful examples and lots of great tips. I especially liked the tutorials on the sample applications (which are fairly advanced and definitely something to take a look at). Stanek doesn't just present the objects and their methods, properties, etc. He develops complete working examples that put the techniques he discusses to work. I learned so much reading the JavaScript chapters, that I recommend this book to others who JUST want to learn JavaScript. But the book doesn't stop there...

The other section that I really liked was the LiveWire section. Stanek explores LiveWire application development in more detail than I've seen anywhere else. He also develops working applications. There's an entire 20-page chapter dedicated to working with files. The chapter is full of terrific examples that explain every aspect of reading, writing and modifying both text and binary files (so I don't know how this could be lacking). Furthermore, there are indeed specific notes on accessing data and files using file paths (something that another review claimed was missing from the book). Heck, there's an entire section on this subject in the file chapter.

And while I'm up on my soap box, the other SUPPOSED flaw mentioned is a counter created using the project object. This example and discussion fills barely a 1/2 page in a 30-page chapter and is obviously meant to be a simple example of how to put the project object to work. Stanek begins the example by saying the project object maintains its state as long as the application is running. He also says that if you stop the application for any reason the project object and all its properties are destroyed and obviously the counter is reset. I mean DUH. No kidding. So what's the problem? I think the problem is that Netscape Developer's Guide is a well planned, well thought out book, that is way way way better than anything else available. -- Alice C. Watts

Wonderful!
Finally a book that really TEACHES all the development stuff you need to master Netscape technologies. Buying this book is like getting 5 books for the price of 1. You get comprehensive coverage of JavaScript that is better (and more useful) than Goodman's JavaScript Bible. You get awesome coverage of Netscape plug-ins that is much much much better than Programming Netscape Plug-ins. You get terrific coverage of LiveWire that is totally better than the Netscape LiveWire SourceBook. You also get first-rate coverage of Netscape Internet Foundation Classes/Java Foundation Classes and LiveConnect that no other book I've seen covers as well

Great buy and certainly useful...
I had a difficult time tracking this book down. Every bookstore I went to told me the book was on reorder. Not sure if this was an excuse or not, but several stores did tell me they had them in stock and they went fast. oh well. I did eventually find the book (right here on-line). So I made it a point to come back to Amazon and tell the world about the book.

Whenever I buy a book, which is fairly often as I develop commercial Web sites. I take the time to compare the book to other similar books. So how does Netscape Developer's Guide compare to other books out there? Extremely well. No other book covered as much ground and made so much sense. (800 pages of pure heaven) No other book had single sections that were worth the price of the book alone (Netscape Developers Guide has three sections that are certainly worth the price of the book, even if they had been the only sections in the book. The sections are the JavaScript, LiveConnect and LiveWire sections.) And yes. It has been a long time since I read a book with so much to rave about.

Complete, Yet Shallow...?
This is the second "Unleashed" Book that I have purchased, and I find them useful, but choppy. The chapters have different authors, and the continuity suffers from this treatment.

Each chapter gives a complete overview of the subject it covers. The key phrase here is "complete overview", as the in-depth detail that many of the new features of FP 2000 has over its predecessors is not there.

This is a good overview of FP 2000 for the intermediate user who has used other versions of FP. I would recommend that beginners or advanced users look elsewhere. If you are looking for detailed descriptions or examples of FP 2000's new features, look elsewhere. If you plan on using database integration, ASP, DHTML or CSS and you buy this book -- budget to buy at least one more book to cover these advanced features.

In sum, I feel this is a good book for a book report about FP 2000 for a high school class; as a "hands-on" guide for real users, this book is not it.

Good reference book for the step above newbie.
I've been building and maintaining websites for myself and volunteer organizations since FP version 1. I have used some simple CGI and Java scripts, but I haven't installed functional ASP or databasing yet, although I have tested them. Anybody going further than a 3-page family vanity site needs a book like this, but no one FP book gives all the answers. This is a very readable, well organized book that either provides sufficient detail to solve problems with all the standard and advanced FP menu options, or gives a sense of how more advanced plugins are supposed to work. This is a very useful book for me. Anyone at my intermediate level needs 3 beyond-newbie FP books, I reckon. This would be a good buy as one of the 3.

The most useful Frontpage 2000 book I've found!
The most thorough Frontpage 2000 book I've found anywhere and I've bought several others. I use this book practically every day in my day to day work!

Part I of the book is useful in getting you up to speed on Frontpage 2000 quickly. It has 2 chapters designed as quick lessons to FrontPage 2000. Everything after this moves increasingly to intermediate, advanced and expert areas.

Part II of the book covers the essentials of multimedia, tables, frames and image maps. I found the design advice to be sound and helpful. No other Frontpage book I read had these kinds of design tips. Most others focussed on how to point and click.

Part III of the book covers all the core features of Frontpage 2000 from themes to style sheets to GIF animation. Again, I found the focus not only on Frontpage use but on sound design refreshing. Chapter 9 on dynamic HTML and Chapter 13 on GIF animation had tips I found nowhere else.

Part IV has 5 chapters on forms and form handling that takes you through intermediate, advanced and expert areas. Wonderful! No other book I found had such in depth coverage of forms.

Part V covers templates, wizards and webbots. This is pretty basic and beginning. The only chapter I found useful was 24 covering user registration and restricted webs.

Part VI covers integration with Office. You'll find separate chapters on integrating Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Access. Chapters 26 and 28 on Excel and Access were the most useful to me personally. I learned several good tricks and just one of these is worth the price of the book.

And that's only half the book. Still, 25 chapters and 5 parts to talk about some other time. --HJ

The best for day-to-day administration
This is the top book for SQL 2000 administration. Mr. Stanek has put together a great book for day-to-day administration of SQL Server 2000. I can't recommend this book strongly enough. It goes beyond the basics and goes a long way answering those questions that you ask yourself everyday and instead of hunting on the Internet every time you need a solution, you should carry this book with you. It shows you the types of tips and real world info that you only get from years of experience. This is like having an expert by your side. The best part about this book is the style in which it is written. Its not too technical and very easy to read. I read this book cover to cover and I have also been using it to help me prep for the exams. This book belongs on every DBA's bookshelf.

Most useful SQL Server 2000 book I've bought!
A must have for administrators and developers. I own several books on SQL Server but none have been as good as this one at saving me time and effort. The book is clearly written, not overly technical, and extremely informative. I really like the tips, notes and real world sections. Use this book to help you with day to day issues, almost like having an experienced consultant at your desk!

Uterly indispensible, the only sql server ref you need
As a web/dba I use sql server, IIS and windows 2000 server extensively. Last year when I was just getting started I discovered this little gem and it was what set me on the right path. I found this book to be utterly indispensible. I actually have two copies that one I use at home when I work in my own projects and one I use at work.

Again in this book as with others in the series I have found single chapters that alone were worth the price of the book, and in a book filled with such chapters you cannot go wrong. The chapter I use the most is 2. In this chapter covers configuring and tuning the sql server database. The chapter starts by looking at guidelines you can use to choose server hardware covering memory, CPU, drives, and more then goes into tools, services and more that you can use to optimize the sql server. In addition to covering the graphical interface, the book covers command-line tools extensive and I found this to be invaluable.

Mr. Stanek includes a best practice tip on page 35 that caused a light bulb to go off in my head and helped me resolve a problem with our databases. This tip covers memory usage in various situations and how you can optimize the memory configuration. The chapter goes on and on like this giving out secrets that other admins didn't want to share with someone like me who was just getting started. In short I think the chapter gave me the equivalent of several years worht of in the field knowledge and since I didn't have years to prove myself this was incredibly helpful.

Worth a read
I just came across this book, because I was picking out a new book to buy... I bought it, and I was very impressed. I just couldn't put it down. I recommend this book to anyone who loves to read a great book.

Amazing story collection
Thank you Mr. Stanek for this excellent book! Magic Lands hits straight and delivers! I liked all 4 stories! I didn't want it to end. Stanek's style kept me busily turning pages. I read several of the stories twice--something I haven't done in years. This is brilliant. A must read

swept away by this
this was a lot of fun.... enjoyed reading it, even went back to read some of the stories again. i think there's something for everyone who reads here. definitely one of the better reads this summer.

Good read in a pinch
I've read hundreds of books from many authors. I set out to hate this book. I mean i really really really did. I figured it would be the same cliched plot. Much to my surprise it wasn't. I was taken I have to admit by the fantastic world and its characters. Ruin Mist isn't filled with standard characters like missing heirs, heroes going after dark lord, girl wonders. It doesn't follow the standard fantasy plot lines. So okay Ted you win I liked it. you happy? Ed

Robert Stanek is GREAT!
This book is the best I have read in a long time. As a newcomer to reading fantasy books, The Elf Queen and the King seemed like a good place to start. It wasn't as complicated as a lot of Fantasy novels, which made it easier to get into. The only trouble is that once you get into the book, you really cannot put it down. I found myself reading the book in a very short time. Not to give to much of the plot away, one of the most amazing pieces of writing I have ever read are the chapters relating to Emel and Adrina.

This book is magic!
This book introduces us to the mysterious world of Ruin Mist. I'll be the first to admit that I am late in joining the Ruin Mist craze. My son wanted to read it, so we read it together, and I was pleasantly surprised!

It's the story of a great change coming to a magical world and those that have a part in that change. Vilmos is a young boy. He lives a somewhat normal life with his "mother" and "father", until his dreams become more than figments of his imagination. With the help of a mysterious benefactor, Vilmos gets away just before he is found out for what he really is (a wizard-to-be). It is also the story of a princess, who is heartbroken, and the journey she undertakes that changes her life and helps her come to terms with the loss of her mother.

Robert Stanek put together a true masterpiece. Not only did the book set the stage for the following books, but it allowed the reader to feel like they were right there within the story. This is one well written book, as it has a little bit of everything. There's well-developed characters, mystery, suspense, conflict of good vs. evil, and more. This was a truly good book and a pleasure to read. This book should be enjoyed by readers of all ages!

Solid Reference, but missing some details
The SQL Server Pocket Admin Guide covers the major areas confronting a DBA: Admin, Data Administration, Performnace Monitoring, Backup and Recovery and the like. More importantly it gives clear examples of syntax for things from ISQL and OSQL to creating jobs to run DTS packages.

The one thing it needs to include is an FYI or "gotchas" section. The pocket administrator is not so good at indicating what it is leaving out.

For example: Restoring backups to other dbs with different owners but identical schemas is non-trivial.

DTS packages running stored procedures do not allow for error trapping. This mean if the SP raises an error, the DTS package will not notice and continue as if the SP ran successfully.

While you can not expect a pocket administrator to cover these details. It should briefly indicate that these are issues to be considered, but beyond the scope of the reference.

Other than this oversight, it is an excellent reference.

Great reference guide for SQL Server 7
For those administrators out there that are responsible for SQL servers, this is a must-have book. Being somewhat partial to MSPress books/manuals, I was especially impressed with the "handi-ness" of this one. Not very heavy on underlying technological details, but a great aid when you're looking for an answer or stored procedure switch.

Outstanding! You won't find a better SQL Server admin book.
I've bought several sQL server books in the past. This is the ONLY sql book that I actually use. Its a great guide and reference and it has answered every SQL Server question I've ever had (so far). I highly recommend this book.

I don't think you'll find a better book to get you through the day to day admin tasks. The book also covers lots of advanced subjects and it does so extremely well.
