Stanek firmly establishes himself as the leading voice in innovative Web publishing and design. His book is a 1200-page masterpiece that you'll want next to your computer ALWAYS. I bought 2 copies, 1 for home and 1 the office.

In the early days of the Intranet set up, I relied heavily on the core chapters written by Stanek to help me learn FrontPage basics. As the days progressed, the book helped me move to more and more advanced topics. I even used this book to help me create my own WebBots and Wizards--something I NEVER thought I could do on my own.
When I contacted Mr. Stanek to thank him for writing such a wonderful book, he suggested I place a "brief note" at Amazon.Com so others could see how much the book truly helped. Well, I didn't think brief would cut it....this is really a wonderful book and everyone should know about it. In fact, anyone that publishes on the Web regardless of their experience level should get this book!

Because of great foresight on Stanek's part, the book hasn't lost its luster. It still shines like a new dime and I rely on it to help me create cutting-edge Web sites time after time. You won't find another book like this one. I guarantee it. - CM

Stanek pulls out all the stops in helping readers understand advanced development concepts with JavaScript. There's tons of useful examples and lots of great tips. I especially liked the tutorials on the sample applications (which are fairly advanced and definitely something to take a look at). Stanek doesn't just present the objects and their methods, properties, etc. He develops complete working examples that put the techniques he discusses to work. I learned so much reading the JavaScript chapters, that I recommend this book to others who JUST want to learn JavaScript. But the book doesn't stop there...
The other section that I really liked was the LiveWire section. Stanek explores LiveWire application development in more detail than I've seen anywhere else. He also develops working applications. There's an entire 20-page chapter dedicated to working with files. The chapter is full of terrific examples that explain every aspect of reading, writing and modifying both text and binary files (so I don't know how this could be lacking). Furthermore, there are indeed specific notes on accessing data and files using file paths (something that another review claimed was missing from the book). Heck, there's an entire section on this subject in the file chapter.
And while I'm up on my soap box, the other SUPPOSED flaw mentioned is a counter created using the project object. This example and discussion fills barely a 1/2 page in a 30-page chapter and is obviously meant to be a simple example of how to put the project object to work. Stanek begins the example by saying the project object maintains its state as long as the application is running. He also says that if you stop the application for any reason the project object and all its properties are destroyed and obviously the counter is reset. I mean DUH. No kidding. So what's the problem? I think the problem is that Netscape Developer's Guide is a well planned, well thought out book, that is way way way better than anything else available. -- Alice C. Watts

Whenever I buy a book, which is fairly often as I develop commercial Web sites. I take the time to compare the book to other similar books. So how does Netscape Developer's Guide compare to other books out there? Extremely well. No other book covered as much ground and made so much sense. (800 pages of pure heaven) No other book had single sections that were worth the price of the book alone (Netscape Developers Guide has three sections that are certainly worth the price of the book, even if they had been the only sections in the book. The sections are the JavaScript, LiveConnect and LiveWire sections.) And yes. It has been a long time since I read a book with so much to rave about.

Each chapter gives a complete overview of the subject it covers. The key phrase here is "complete overview", as the in-depth detail that many of the new features of FP 2000 has over its predecessors is not there.
This is a good overview of FP 2000 for the intermediate user who has used other versions of FP. I would recommend that beginners or advanced users look elsewhere. If you are looking for detailed descriptions or examples of FP 2000's new features, look elsewhere. If you plan on using database integration, ASP, DHTML or CSS and you buy this book -- budget to buy at least one more book to cover these advanced features.
In sum, I feel this is a good book for a book report about FP 2000 for a high school class; as a "hands-on" guide for real users, this book is not it.

Part I of the book is useful in getting you up to speed on Frontpage 2000 quickly. It has 2 chapters designed as quick lessons to FrontPage 2000. Everything after this moves increasingly to intermediate, advanced and expert areas.
Part II of the book covers the essentials of multimedia, tables, frames and image maps. I found the design advice to be sound and helpful. No other Frontpage book I read had these kinds of design tips. Most others focussed on how to point and click.
Part III of the book covers all the core features of Frontpage 2000 from themes to style sheets to GIF animation. Again, I found the focus not only on Frontpage use but on sound design refreshing. Chapter 9 on dynamic HTML and Chapter 13 on GIF animation had tips I found nowhere else.
Part IV has 5 chapters on forms and form handling that takes you through intermediate, advanced and expert areas. Wonderful! No other book I found had such in depth coverage of forms.
Part V covers templates, wizards and webbots. This is pretty basic and beginning. The only chapter I found useful was 24 covering user registration and restricted webs.
Part VI covers integration with Office. You'll find separate chapters on integrating Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Access. Chapters 26 and 28 on Excel and Access were the most useful to me personally. I learned several good tricks and just one of these is worth the price of the book.
And that's only half the book. Still, 25 chapters and 5 parts to talk about some other time. --HJ

Again in this book as with others in the series I have found single chapters that alone were worth the price of the book, and in a book filled with such chapters you cannot go wrong. The chapter I use the most is 2. In this chapter covers configuring and tuning the sql server database. The chapter starts by looking at guidelines you can use to choose server hardware covering memory, CPU, drives, and more then goes into tools, services and more that you can use to optimize the sql server. In addition to covering the graphical interface, the book covers command-line tools extensive and I found this to be invaluable.
Mr. Stanek includes a best practice tip on page 35 that caused a light bulb to go off in my head and helped me resolve a problem with our databases. This tip covers memory usage in various situations and how you can optimize the memory configuration. The chapter goes on and on like this giving out secrets that other admins didn't want to share with someone like me who was just getting started. In short I think the chapter gave me the equivalent of several years worht of in the field knowledge and since I didn't have years to prove myself this was incredibly helpful.

It's the story of a great change coming to a magical world and those that have a part in that change. Vilmos is a young boy. He lives a somewhat normal life with his "mother" and "father", until his dreams become more than figments of his imagination. With the help of a mysterious benefactor, Vilmos gets away just before he is found out for what he really is (a wizard-to-be). It is also the story of a princess, who is heartbroken, and the journey she undertakes that changes her life and helps her come to terms with the loss of her mother.
Robert Stanek put together a true masterpiece. Not only did the book set the stage for the following books, but it allowed the reader to feel like they were right there within the story. This is one well written book, as it has a little bit of everything. There's well-developed characters, mystery, suspense, conflict of good vs. evil, and more. This was a truly good book and a pleasure to read. This book should be enjoyed by readers of all ages!

The one thing it needs to include is an FYI or "gotchas" section. The pocket administrator is not so good at indicating what it is leaving out.
For example: Restoring backups to other dbs with different owners but identical schemas is non-trivial.
DTS packages running stored procedures do not allow for error trapping. This mean if the SP raises an error, the DTS package will not notice and continue as if the SP ran successfully.
While you can not expect a pocket administrator to cover these details. It should briefly indicate that these are issues to be considered, but beyond the scope of the reference.
Other than this oversight, it is an excellent reference.

I don't think you'll find a better book to get you through the day to day admin tasks. The book also covers lots of advanced subjects and it does so extremely well.
