This reprint of the sole extant copy of a tract published in 1852, which was probably but not certainly given to Abraham by Mary Todd, is inof itself an excellent daily devotional. Unlike many contemporary devotionals, the commentary after the daily passage is brief, to the point, and timeless. Carl Sandberg's prolog provides us with some further information about Lincon's faith.

Since each Sanburg poem in this cycle is read skillfully by a different actor, the listener gets a hightened impression of the poet's many voices. Sanburg's poetry is like 'The Spoon River Anthology', a motley crowd of speakers. I enjoyed listening to this production even more than the recordings by Sandburg himself.

Unfortunately, I have not had a chance to read this entire book. An exerpt from it, The Fiery Trial, was published in 1948 along with the full volume, and that is what I read. The 478 page part that I did read, however, was enough to recommend this book. Carl Sandburgs writing style is beautiful, and extremely descriptive. The characters are plentiful, and each one is well written out and adds something to the story. Though this novel, or at least the part that I read, takes place during the Civil War, the book does not focus on the war. It instead focuses on the way people are affected at home or after a battle. The book is totally focused on the characters and that really pulls you in. It also makes you think twice about the real causes behind the war and it lets you see that neither side was wholly innocent. I recommend this book to anyone who likes a lot of characters and is able to keep a full load of information straight in their head. It is not perfect, but it is wonderful, and I'm certain that others will enjoy it as much as I have. It made me stop several times to exclaim, "Wow, this is a really great book!!!"

Carl Sandburg was a very boring book, to me. It was a biography on a railroad man named Carl. This book started out with a chronology of Carl Sandburg's life. Carl was born in the 1860's and died in the 1960's, at the age of 93. After the chronology of Carl's life, the book resumes onto the beginning of Carl's life. He began as a cheap railroad man. Then, one day when he was about 25, he struck an oil well and became rich. Following, he paid for college and became a great college professor. He taught college until he retired at the age of 85. Eight years later, at the age of 93, Carl Sandburg died. I believe if this book was fictional with a little bit of adventure here and there, it would have been much better. Also, if it had som action at all, to me, the book would have been much better. Overall, I give the book Carl Sandburg, by Richard Crowder, 2 stars.

This person seems to be more interested with Sandburg's writing than with Sandburg. But he definitely has respect for Carl.
