Casca's Russian Front a must!
Feel the biting cold of a Russian winter as Casca and his buddies try to make it back through enemy lines to safety! Not a book for the faint hearted or squeamish. Those who have ever read the Sven Hassel novels will enjoy this one, and I'd recommend watching the film "Cross of Iron" to get some idea of what Casca went through in this one. One of the best in the series, and see how Hitler REALLY died!

ANOTHER BARRY SADLER EPIC!
This should be all made into movies. Highlander stole the idea but it doesn't come near to this work of extrodinarry talent that Mr. Sadler had. This is a must read.

One of the top 5 Casca books
This is my all-time favorite Casca book. My favorite parts are where one of Casca's men kills an SS squad herding Jews on a train, and where Casca kills the three SS men with the female Jewish prisoner. The rest I won't give away. The action surpasses any found in those 500+ page epic historical novels. It is simply the best.

Of Germanic and Mongol Tribes against Imperial Rome
Casca is back, and fighting for a weak, inbred, and failing Roman Empire. After Christianity became Roman Catholicism, Casca's pagan ways are now illegal. Like Christians of earlier times, pagans are enslaved. By doing a repeat of his win in the arena of the now decrepid gladiators, he goes - once again - from slavery to the legion. As he passes from one captor to another, Casca experiences Romans, Germans, and Mongols during a pivotal time in history. An easy, but good read.

One of the best Casca stories
Ignore the review below, it bears no relation to the book. This story is not about Mongols - see #22: The Mongol, - Huns or anyone else mentioned in that erroneous review. This book takes place between the years 163AD and 250AD and is based largely at a hold in Scandinavia, amongst a fledgling Viking community. Casca meets and falls in love with a beautiful woman, but to win her he must fight her evil father.

There is plenty of good action here and charts the love between the two main characters as well as the normal action and adventure usually found in Barry Sadler novels.

Attila meets his match
An interesting account of the Huns invasion of Western Europe in the 5th century, told through the eyes of Casca, fighting for the last time for the Roman Legions. The account of the battle between Attila's Huns and the legions under Aetius is well written. There is a poignant part early on when he returns to a favourite place we read about in an earlier novel, and one can't help but feel for the character. Certainly well worth a read.

Well told story.
I liked this book for a couple of reasons. The first, and most obvious is that it is just a plain old well written story.

The second is the feeling of familiarity in some of the things Casca experiences here. Twice in the story he goes back to places that meant something to him in the distant past. This is something I think all of us have felt when walking through the halls of the school you attended as a child or driving by the house you grew up in. Places, by themselves, are nothing without the people that made them special. The way Sadler relates this feeling really stands out in this book.

Worth a read - one of the best Cascas
This is a story of a man's love for his adopted family and of revenge woven into the usual warrior-style book Barry Sadler penned. For that reason its one of the superior Casca novels and shouldn't be missed in favour of one of the turkeys he later wrote. There is also a fairly accurate historical account of the fall of the Vandal kingdom in north Africa, too.

One of the best written of the Casca series
There are many reviews here of the books in the Casca series, and little need to review the underlying premise in detail - if you are here, you've read at least one, and know that Casca is the Wandering Noncom - doomed to be a mercenary till Christ returns.

The series is engaging, and this is one of the best. If you have not yet read any, begin with the first if you possibly can. then read a few others. Only with a few Cascas under your belt will you appreciate this book as the essence of the series.

It is sparse, well written, and gives more insight into Casca than most of the other books. If you have read Casca, but not this one, seek it out.

Blue Barry bear counts from 1 to 20

Twenty for the Price of Ten
Unlike many counting books which only go through ten, Blue Barry counts all the way to twenty. He counts all kinds of things children like, including the twenty delicious chocolate chip cookies at his grandparents` house. We are never told why only he is blue, but this has been a favorite topic of speculation in our house. I doubt it will win awards, but with the reasonable prices of Golden Books, this is a bargain counting book.

A Rum Book, me hearties!
Casca has a stab at being a pirate while doing a good turn for a ruthless plantation owner, little knowing his paymaster has a hidden agenda! A good tale of the high seas and Sadler uses realistic terminology to give the reader the feel of being there. Definately one to read but not at sea!

A burning story - Casca roasted well and good!
Casca falls foul of the Brotherhood in Persia whilst serving the King Shapur II. A typically good Sadler novel, well-paced, informative historically and full of action. This follows on from The Warlord and precedes the Damned, so its best to read these books in that order to get the feel of the life of the main character. You can't help feeling for the main character as he is betrayed and sentenced to burning at the stake - but I won't give the plot away by telling you how an immortal man survives that! Read it for yourself, its a great action fantasy adventure.

Casca's Mercenary story a winner
This story is set in Cambodia shortly after Pol Pot and his Khmer Rouge comes to power and has Casca leading a band of mercenaries on a rescue misison into the jungle to get a Chinese family out before the communists capture them. I like the story mainly for its fast pace, frequent action and easy dialogue between the characters (there is a love interest with Casca falling for a rather sexy Chinese girl), plus the won't-they-will-they-get-away suspense as the commies get closer and closer. I won't give it away except to say that there is an explosive finale.

Humour and Revolt
Casca gets involved in the Boxer rebellion in China in 1899-1900 and fights on the Chinese side against the imperialist British oppressors. Well, that's the condensed version, but I found it by far the most hilarious of the Casca stories (the parade ground scene with the corpse on the flagpole and the bandit raid on the Chinese village being two scenes which had me in stitches) and if you can ignore the blatant anti-British bias that screams out at you this is an enjoyable yarn of Casca acting as a British undercover spy and ending up fighting against them. The Chinese water torture scene is very well done, too.
