A dangerous book--capable of igniting a spiritual fire!
This book is what got my passion for prayer ignited. Before I am too ashamed to admit how much I prayed. I am indebted to this book to my call to intercede for couples and marriage (revival)in America. A well-worn saying among book reviews, but it certainly applies to this one, this devotional needs in the hands of every believer!!! If you are reading this review, this means you!

Itzaj Maya Grammar
This is a technical work, not a teach-yourself; not that anybody likely to be buying it would be likely to be misled (or to need a review here ...?)

The blurb on the back (perhaps lacking our British self-depreciation) describes the book as an "exemplary grammar" and I must say this is a fair description. My interests are general linguistic so I can't make any comment on the work's value for Mayan experts, but it is certainly one of the very best grammars of a non-Standard Average European language I've ever come across. The extensive coverage of discourse-level topics is noteworthy especially.

The book is admirably clear and physically well laid out.
It really, really needs an index though.(my only serious carp)

PS the version sold is a paperback, *not* hardcover

A Path to the Maya
This book is by far the bext dictionary of a Maya language I have come across. It is written by Charles Hofling in collaboration with Felix Tesucun. It begins with sentence structure, which is fairly complicated, and thus helpful to a Western-minded person. It describes in detail many aspects of sentence structures. Best of all for me, it not only defines words with both Spanish and English equivalents, but it also uses those words in sentences - and translates them into both in Spanish and in English-- so that one can truly get a feel for the language. Also one can learn Spanish more easily while trying to tackle Maya. The reason this book was written was to describe this Guatemalan language, Itzaj, because he felt like it was threatened with extinction. A better purpose is that we be able to walk into Maya thought and better accompany them in their struggles for a free and safe life. Like the the Maya themselves, this language is robust and thriving and will be spoken many katuns in the future. One regret is that they did not influence Victoria Bricker to have her fairly good dictionary be as comprehensive as this.

A Hidden Treasure
By reading the introduction to this book, you will find that although Mandy Oxendine was Chesnutt's first novel it was not published until 1997. Being somewhat of a student of Chesnutt, I enjoyed this book a great deal. But I can also understand why publishers in the 1890's would turn it down. In the tradition of the times, there are twists and turns in the plot. The book is very short and is very easy to read. I would recommend it!

A Timeless Christmas Tradition
Master storyteller and social critic, Charles Dickens, turns this social treatise on shortcomings of Victorian society into an entertaining and heartwarming Christmas ghost story which has charmed generations and become an icon of Christmas traditions. Who, in the Western world has not heard, "Bah, Humbug!" And who can forget the now almost hackneyed line of Tiny Tim, "God bless us, every one!" or his cheerfully poignant observation, that he did not mind the stares of strangers in church, for he might thus serve as a reminder of He who made the lame, walk and the blind, see. Several movie versions: musical, animated, updated, or standard; as well as stage productions (I recall the Cleveland Playhouse and McCarter Theatre`s with fondess.) have brought the wonderful characterizations to the screen, as well as to life. This story of the redemption of the bitter and spiritually poor miser, and the book itself; however, is a timeless treasure whose richness, like Mrs Cratchit`s Christmas pudding, is one that no production can hope to fully capture.

The original "Carol"
It's hard to think of a literary work that has been filmed and staged in more imaginative variations than Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol"--there's the excellent George C. Scott version, the delightful Muppet version, the charming Mr. Magoo version, etc., etc. But ultimately true "Carol" lovers should go back to Dickens' original text, which remains a great read.

"Carol" tells the story of cold-hearted miser Ebenezer Scrooge, who despises the Christmas holiday and scorns all who celebrate it. But a visit from a series of supernatural beings forces him to reevaluate his attitude--and his life.

With this simple plot Dickens has created one of the enduring triumphs of world literature. It's a robust mix of humor, horror, and (most of all) hope, all leavened with a healthy dash of progressive social criticism. One thing I love about this book is that while it has a focus on a Christian holiday, Dickens puts forth a message that is truly universal; I can imagine this story resonating with people of any religious background, and also with more secular-oriented people.

This is a tale of greed, selfishness, regret, redemption, family, and community, and is enlivened by some of the most memorable characters ever created for English literature. Even if Dickens had never written another word, "A Christmas Carol" would still have, I believe, secured his place as one of the great figures of world literature.

Heartwarming conversion of a soul
Charles Dickens writes this story in such detail that you almost believe you have just enjoyed Christmas dinner at the Cratchits home. The characters have so much depth. The made for t.v. or movie screen renditions do not truly depict what Ebenezer Scrooge witnesses with the three spirits that causes such a change in his outlook on life. Such as Scrooge's emotions being quickened by the past heartache in his childhood; seeing how his bad choices caused the hardening of his heart and how deeply it cost him in the end; seeing what could have been his to enjoy and then thinking it could still be his with the Spirit of Christmas Present only to find out the future does not hold any love or joy for him by the Spirit of Christmas Yet to Come and instead his actions leave him robbed at death and no one left to grieve for him. Read the book to hear how this story was really written. Even if you have seen every Christmas Carol movie every made, the book will offer so many gold nuggets that you will think you are hearing it for the very first time. Pictures are beautifully detailed throughout the book. Excellent!!!

Terrific literature
Charles Dickens has been one of my favorite authors since I was forced to read him in high school. I had not picked up one of his stories since, but upon reading that David Copperfield was Dicken's personal favorite book he had authored, I decided to try him again. I was not disappointed. Dicken's creates an incredible cast of characters and paints a vivid portrait of 19th-century England. Aside from fulfulling those crucial elements of writing a novel, Dickens tells a terrific story. The initial serialization of the story into 19 monthly parts required Dickens to create many dramatic buildups and twists and turns that kept the audience buying the next installment. When it is all put together the novel is an unexpected roller coaster that has many climbs, dives, loop-the-loops, and sharp curves. In the end everything of course comes together beautifully and the characters all get their just desserts. This is yet another clinic by Dickens in how to write a well organized, though unpredictable, novel that maintains the interest of a reader through approx. 900 pages of writing. It is a wonderful experience that all lovers of good fiction should at least attempt.

Life Is A Great Storm
David Copperfield, Dickens' favorite child, is an experience. Forget what your high school teacher or college professor told you. Forget all the terribly bad film representations of this book. Forget the glib one-liner reviews about Dickens people being caricatures instead of characters. READ this book. This book is one of the few Real Books in this world.

The great storm scene alone will thunder forever in your memories. You will encounter with Copperfield:
• the evil, chilling Uriah Heep,
• the mental and physical destruction of his mother by a Puritanical, untilitarian step-father,
• the always in-debt Mr. Mawcawber who somehow transcends his economic and egocentric needs into something noble,
• the betrayal of Copperfield by his best friend and Copperfield's shattered emotions by this betrayal,
• the ruination of another close friend's reputation, and her step-by-step climb back out of the mire,
• Copperfield's own passionate step into marriage while too young with an irresponsible, yet innocent child-woman, her death,
• Copperfield's own rise from poverty and orphanhood into worldly success but empty life until mature love rescues him.

Dickens has a real gift for creating people that irritate you, yet gradually you come to love them - just like folks in real life. If you never have read Dickens, come meet David Copperfield. You'll find that your impressions of David from the brief snippets by critics, teachers, reviewers, professors and know-it-alls completely different than the Real Thing.

One of the best novels ever
This is my favourite novel by Dickens and one of my all time favourites. Some of his best known characters are here:the ever optimistic Mr Micawber, the stout hearted Aunt Betsy, the slimy toad Uriah Heep, the troubled Steerforth, faithful Pegotty, honest Ham,the nasty Murdstones, and so on.Even Jip the dog is brought to life with real character. No one has created such characters as Dickens. They are a sheer delight.Dickens has a wonderful sense of humour, which shines in this book.He also has a very readable style of writing. He can be overly sentimental, but this was expected by 19th century readers.Agnes, David Copperfield's second wife and true love is just too good to be believed. We can forgive Dickens these irritations, because he gives us the most memorable characters in literature. Also, there is a great deal of sympathy and affection for ordinary human beings and their foibles in his work. This is a novel which can be read over and over again during a whole lifetime, giving much pleasure with each reading.
