Pillsbury Doughboy meets Leatherface
Above, best describes Jerry Brudos. A doughy family man who wanders from one job to the next and has a deep hatred for who else? -- his mother. Serial killer after serial killer say they hate their mother. So why do they kill other women? Brudos also likes to wear ladies undies and high heels which makes me wonder why his wife never thought there was more to her husband then just his headaches. I'm not saying that all men who wear women's underwear are serial murderers but I don't understand how Darcie Brudos never followed up on her husbands weird habits. For instance: locking his workshop door and refusing to let her in, telling her to call him from wherever before she could come home, disappearing at all hours, and finding a paperweight that in the shape of a woman's breast. Is it me, or are some people really that naieve? Ann Rule is great at true crime writing and this story holds your interest, I think Jerry got off easy considering that those four women no longer have their lives and their families no longer have them. This book should also serve as a warning to women....BEWARE....we are not as free as we think we are, when we have to worry about our car breaking down or walking in a Mall parking lot where a maniac could be waiting.

engrossing, shocking
I have to agree with the reviewers who described LUST KILLER as one of Ann Rule's best. Rule's engrossing writing style accompanied with the sheer horror of this man's deeds makes for a guaranteed page-turner of a book. Some of the crimes Jerry Brudos committed were more disgusting than anything I've ever heard, so I'm surprised this is the first time I've ever heard his name.

As always, Rule treats the victims with the reverence they deserve. This book doesn't go into the same extreme detail about their lives as other of her novels do, but then this is a very short book. If you've never read Ann Rule before, I recommend starting here.

This Guy is REALLY Sick!!
"Lust Killer" is the best of the 7 Ann Rule books I have read to date. Set (once again) in "peaceful" Oregon, it tells the story of Jerome Brudos, an absolute Wacko of a "small time" serial killer. "LK" is notable for its brevity and compactness. The author does a first rate job of concentrating the plot, which never wanders or digresses into backgrounds, geographical descriptions, or introductiuons of minor characters as do some of her later works(see "And Never Ler Her Go"). There are no wasted pages in "LK". This is the perfect place for a reader to test Ann Rule to see if (s)he likes her. My guess is that the author passes with flying colors. AR fans need not think twice, this one is a no brainer. The story is so compact that the reader can even break the "Ann Rule rule" and view the few centerfold photos without telegraphing the ending. Another amazon reader e-mailed me with the thought that Brudos and Diane Downs of "Small Sacrifices" would make a great couple. Read both and see if you agree. Question: Why do the streets and subways of New York City seem safer than Oregon?

Good easy True Crime reading
Ann Rule is one of the best True Crime writers. I will be looking for more of her work. This book has some interesting stories and are easy reading and written well. I would recommend this book if you like true crime.

This collection held my attention until the very last story!
A friend turned me on to Ann Rule's books. This was my first book of hers. I could not put it down! I've got friends waiting to borrow the book when I am finished. The stories are easy to read, astonishing and bone-chillingly true! I'm hooked!! The stories describe seemingly normal people that have very dark sides. This collection of stories has definately opened my eyes to the nature of the human beast. My heart goes out to the victim(s) and their families. I hope Ann keeps cranking the books out because I intend to read every one of them!!

Heart pounding and Spell binding, Hard to put down!!!
Anne Rules.. Fever in the heart

ST-TNG: Possession
Star Trek-The Next Generation: Possession written by J.M. Dillard is well-written book. This book is a sequel to an eariler book by Dillard called Demons in the ST-TOS series.

This book is about energy beings... bodiless entities that brought a planet-wide plague to Vulcan eighty years ago that were trapped inside special containers. Now, the containers are being opened... unless the entities can be stopped once again, they will spread their madness, their maelstrom of emotion, hatred and rage throughout the Federation.

This book has fleshed out Deanna Troi and Worf characters as they battle the energy beings as they begin to take over the minds and bodies of all they encounter. The Enterprise and her crew are amoung the possessors targets and Captain Jean-Luc Picard will face this deadly enemy.

If you ever have a chance read Star Trek-The Original Series Demons #30 first and then Star Trek-The Next Generation: Possessions #40 in that order it will make better sense. This book really gets into the character's minds and you think you're reading a horror book. There is a high degree of intrigue and mystery as the characters turn from friends to foes and no one can be trusted.

Suspenseful and Scary
This one's bordering on a horror novel, really. It's an excellent book - it's just that some parts are really, really suspenseful and freaky. Dr. Kyla Dannelke is a good character, and a match for Worf (!). The aliens possessors really make your skin crawl. The scenes on Vulcan, and with the Ferengi, were frightening. Sometimes I just wanted to yell at the characters, "Don't you see what's going on?", but there wouldn't have been any storyline if they had figured it out immediately! The tension is lifted during the Alexander-and-hamster scenes. The solution to the problem is really creative, too.

Very,very creepy
In case any of you are wondering, this book is a sequal to an earlier book of Ms. Dillard's:TOS #30:Demons(look for my review on this book also). The two book have basically the same storyline(aka. energy beings that feed on fear invade the Enterprise)but not the same plot. This book was definately chilling. The author really makes you feel Deanna's instense fear of these creatures.Like its prequal,a MUST read!

Ann rules!
Another great Ann Rule book. While not my favorite of her books, this out does many of the other true crime books I have read. I like that Ms Rule not only gives the facts, but really tells it in a story. If you have not read Small Sacrifices, I recommend that one, it is my favorite Ann Rule title for its sheer unbelievabity (also, Lifetime TV made it into a decent made-for-cable movie).

Outstanding!
This book is a combination of one book-length story, "You Belong to Me," and short stories: "The Last Letter," "The Vanishing," "Black Christmas," "One Trick Pony," and "The Computer Error and The Killer." There are 461 total pages, with 278 pages composing "You Belong to Me." Every page will keep you thoroughly engaged in the story. It is very difficult to find a stopping point for a bathroom break or cup of coffee.

Good Early Ann
"The Want Ad Killer" represents good early Ann Rule when, for whatever reason, she wrote as Andy Stack. It is the frightening tale of Harvey Carignan, a serial killer who terrorized young women in both the Seattle and Twin Cities during the late '70s. The all too apt title refers to a teenage girl who was abducted after answering a "planted" classified ad. "WAK" is short, concise, no nonsense true crime. It is told as a police story, with little courtroom drama or legal maneuvering. There are also none of the longer, more involved sub plots of the authoress' later stories such as "And Never Let Her Go" or "Everything She Ever Wanted", making this a good choice for readers unfamiliar with her work. For the few Ann fans that have yet to read "WAK", don't think twice. A word of warning: The Ann Rule rule is in effect. Do not look at the centerfold photos or the book's cover. Far too much is revealed therein. Keep yourself in suspense for as long as possible. Parents of teenage girls will keep their daughters locked up after reading this one.

Accurate Depiction
This book is true to form. The former head of the Minneapolis Crime lab is a personal friend who worked on this actual case. He told me about the case before I ever read the book. After I read the book, I could tell how accurate Ann Rule depicted this true case. One attracting aspects of this book is that it fast pace, always on the move. There is never a dull moment because there can't be. This book takes you on a trip through the inner workings of a true diabolical mind. Along the way you travel to numerous parts of the United States where this hanus murder went from Alaska to Washington and finally in Minnesota where this unfortunate story ends. I also has the privelage of meeting Det. Sonnestahl who worked the Minneaoplis end of this case. This is a book that will leave a lasting imprint on your memory.

First time Ann Rule reader
My first adventure into reading true crime, certainly not my last. It seemed as though Ann must have been an eyewitness to Harvey Carnigan's life of crime. It was very well told, easy to follow, difficult to put down. Eight more Ann Rule books sitting on the shelf for me to read - and more to come.

Reading this book turned me into Ann Rule's biggest fan.
This book was the first of Ann Rule's that I ever read. Now I own all of them!! It tells the great tale of a young girl who was brainwashed, and convinced by her father to murder her step-mother. Ann Rule dos a great job of telling all aspects of this story without describing too many of the gory detail. There are great pictures that help you keep the characters straight and help you realize that this amazing story is actually true. The story doesn't end with the discovery of the guilty pary, all the court proceedings and aftermath are almost as interesting as the main story itself. This is definatelty a book I could read in one sitting

Your heart goes out to Cinnamon
I have just finished this book; the first I've read by Ann Rule, and have been engrossed from the first page. As soon as I finished it, I scanned the Internet to find out what had happened to the main characters; especially Cinnamon Brown, the poor young 14 year old girl that was locked up for the crime that her father brainwashed her to do. I was so pleased to discover that she has been released from prison and is happily married with a kid. I hope and pray she can put what her father did to her behind her, and get on with having a happy normal life. If you like a book with real people, real situations, and real emotions, get this book. You won't regret it.

Ann Rule at her best
After seeing several "true crime" shows on the Brown Case I ordered Ann's book. I had been a fan of hers for several years but hadn't read this story yet. She brings the people involved in this case to life.

What David Brown did to his family is unthinkable. He molested his wife's sister, he manipulated his 14 year old daughter into killing his wife and then sat back and enjoyed his freedom and the insurance money from the death of his wife.

While he lounged in a nearly 1/2 a million dollar home, now married to his late wife's sister, his daughter sat in the Ventura School (a youth prison). If not for three men, who went above and beyond the call of duty, David Brown would never have been convicted. Kudos to Jay Newell, Jeoff Robinson and Fred McLean. And to Cinnamon Brown for breaking the silence.

Ann Rule weaves a story so incredible and so vivid you will not be able to put the book down till you're done!

Bravo, Ann, on another truly exceptional book.

Not that interesting
I usually enjoy Ann Rule's books. But the first story in "Fever" was dull. It was a boring soap opera starring an average looking woman, a frumpy coach and a husband who needed a backbone. The only likable character was Morris and once he was gone, I was left with the boring tale of the average looking woman and the frumpy coach. Ms. Rule just went on and on with a story that could have been told in half the pages. The other short stories in the book were intersting. Infact the "Highway Accident" might have been a better story to spend some time telling.

Outstanding
Ann Rule is the # 1 true crime writer. I have read many true crime books by other authors but none of them compare to Ann Rule. She tells you everything about the crime, the killer & the victims. I have every book she has ever written & will keep buying her books. Thanks Ann for being the best.

Another one from the heart
My enthusiasm at reading another book by Ann Rule was well placed. Ms. Rule has an uncanny ability to transport me to the very spot she is writing about. All of a sudden I am in Yakima, Washington. I can smell the winter scents in the air as the tension mounts in this story of a romantic triangle that proved to be fatal. With an ease that Ms. Rule is well known for, I am swept along the story line. I follow her not knowing where she will take me, but trusting all will become clear. What is true skill on her part is that in the beginning the reader doesn't know who did what - only that this is a true life story of betrayal and eventually, murder. As the tension mounts even more, Ms. Rule delivers the details in a fashion akin to a balloon ride. Before I know it I am, unfortunately, finished with her story. My balloon landed and now I have to wait for her to write another. Ms. Rule writes with such thought and obvious deliberation that it is quite easy to trust her work will always be interesting and compelling. As long as she continues to write, she will stay on the top of my favorite author list

The story is gripping, the writing so-so
I picked this book up mainly because I'm from the Philadelphia area and followed the intense coverage of the Capano trial as it happened. The story is compelling: the wealthy, politically connected yet controlling & obsessive lover, the beautiful yet troubled and needy murder victim, infidelity, betrayal, violence, stalking, family ties, all the ingredients of a TV movie or novel, yet, sadly, from real life. Ann Rule does a thorough job of assembling the facts, having interviewed many of the key players and obviously having extensively studied the trial transcripts, evidence and court pleadings. She also does a nice job of painting psychological portraits of the principals: Capano, Anne Marie Fahey, Debby McIntyre. Rule's writing is workmanlike, a little cliche-ridden, nothing special, but the story pulls you in and makes you shake your head in bewilderment at the waste of it all: a lovely, spirited & intelligent woman dead instead of raising the children she ought to have had; a bright, wealthy attorney who had every advantage in life yet squandered them all; close-knit families broken into pieces; lives and reputations destroyed. Read it and weep.

Outstanding true crime thriller
"...And Never Let Her Go" is an excellent true crime novel based on the real life murder of Anne Marie Fahey by her lover, Thomas Capano. The case drew national attention because Anne Marie was the scheduling secretary for the governor of Delaware. Although I remember reading about the crime in the newspaper and some magazines, Ann Rule's book gives additional insight into what led up to the crime, how the police tracked down the killer, and the subsequent trial. Indepth interviews with the Fahey family and Thomas Capano's other lover, Debby McIntyre, give welcome insight into Anne Marie and Thomas Capano, and allows the reader to see how vulnerable and susceptible Anne Marie was to Capano's manipulations. Rule's book can be enjoyed by those who kept up with the case through the media, and those who may not have heard anything about Anne Marie's murder.

If you're looking for exploitive material....
you won't find it here. Ann Rule went out of her way to show respect to all involved (even to Capano himself, to a certain degree). In my opinion, the book was sensitive, informative, sad, incredible. I do think that Debbie M. is not as innocent as portrayed, but Ann didn't go too far out of the way to absolve her.

I just don't get some of the negative reviews. One person (2 or so down) at first complained that Ann was trying to let the facts speak for themselves and that wasn't good enough. In the next paragraph, he says that Ann needs to step back and let the story speak for itself. Huh?

Another person said that the other books on the subject (by different authors) looked better. Yeah, if more exploitive Jerry Springer stuff is your thing, go for it.

Someone complained that there wasn't enough action and the dialogue was bland, and that they were used to reading fiction and this book was horrible. Um, this isn't fiction. You want action every two pages and snappy dialogue, look elsewhere. This is real life, baby.

ann rule still rules
this one wasnt one of my favorites, but it was an engrossing read. I somehow just couldnt get sympathy for Scott, hard as I tried. Ms. Rule is at her best when she is writing about maniupulative women ( ie: Small Sacrifices and Everything she ever wanted), but this was a good read to loose yourself in. Rule's command of the english language,is lovely, and her descriptions of things are haunting. I have never been to Seattle, yet reading her books, I have felt like I can actually see it. I enjoy reading her, and think that she is actually the best true crime writer alive since Capote. But end of the dream wasnt her best- but not her worst either. All an all, a good read, with a warning- Rule is one of those writers that you start reading, you cant put down and stay up all nite reading. So if you ever read a Rule book... start it on a weekend!

I knew many of the characters and enjoyed the book
I enjoyed the book tremendously because it reconnected me to a time in my youth when I had a strong association with Scotty and the Scurlock family. How painful it must have been for all of them to go through. I feel the strongest for MaryJane Scurlock. She has had enough heartache in one life for any woman. Scotty was always a free spirit. I'd be lying if I said I didn't feel a bit of what Ann Rule described in her book as his magnetism and presence. Ann doesn't deserve to be attacked though, and I've seen a bit much on this site. She may not have hit the nail every time she swung the hammer, but I had little difficulty believing most of what I read, because it closely fit my memories, images and understanding of the principals involved. In fact, there was more than a bit of ugliness left under the sheets and she deserves some credit for keeping it there. As for me, I'm sad any of these things have happened at all. Scotty may have reaped what he had sown, but I still feel a sense of loss with his passing. Scotty chose his path and denied his gifts; it's a good lesson for all of us. I also feel some loss regarding Rev. Scurlock. I was one of many who listened to his thoughts and sermons and feelings for hours on end. He had much of the same charisma Scotty had. But his "reported" treatment of the Seattle police was arrogant and more than a bit disappointing. His deeds and unheeded philosophies are going to burden him for the rest of his life. It's a sad and well told story, worthy of more thought.

A TALENTED MALE PRIMA DONA
Ann Rule can do no wrong; her stories are always interesting, however, not quite as complex as the ones the late Thomas Thompson wrote (who is my favorite author for true crime).

If you want to know how to get started robbing banks read this book. No...better yet pay attention to what happens at the end so you know what you would get yourself into by robbing banks.

The evolution of a criminal is prominent in this story and should keep you glued to the book 'til finished. A lot of things happen in this story and the author makes it easy to keep track of everything. A grand read!

Not up to par
I've read all of Ann Rule's books, including her pseudonymous ones. They are invariably compelling studies of both victims and killers. This time out, it seems as if Rule was so fearful of saying anything negative about Sheila Bellush (the victim) that the woman is scarcely more than a shadow. Her ex-husband Allen is, in true Rule fashion, defined so thoroughly that he comes across in all his horrifying reality. So do Sheila's second husband Jamie, her two daughters from Allen; even her four quads feel real. But Rule is so cautious in her descriptions of Sheila herself that the book becomes very heavy-going, very one-sided as a result. As well, because so much detail is paid to the litigious battles engaged in by Allen and Sheila in the ten years after their divorce, one has to wonder why a woman who believed her ex-husband was very capable of killing her would (despite her desire to provide for her children) constantly seek to even the score with him in a courtroom.

I do not believe, ever, in blaming the victim, but I think in failing to deliver a clear picture of Sheila, we're left with the extraordinary tale of a woman in fear of her life, yet not so fearful that she'd stop poking a stick into the cage holding the lion. Given how well every other character (even the most minor ones) are defined, it's a great pity that the central character remains so shadowy and undefined.

This book simply isn't on the same level as Dead By Sunset or And Never Let Her go--tales that show just what Rule can do when she pulls out all the stops.

Loved this book!
As a long-time reader of Ann Rule, I am pleased to say that this is her best book yet. While reading this unbelievable story, you will feel like you personally know the characters. Of all of Rule's protagonists, Allen Blackthorne is the most intriguing. He had everything anyone could want, and really nothing to gain by killing his ex-wife, but just couldn't allow her to slip away from his grasp. Well researched and written!

Excellent read..highly recommended
Every Breath You Take, a true story written by Ann Rule is my first time read for anything written by this author. I'll have to say I was highly impressed. If I have trouble getting a book to grab my interest after the first or second chapter, then I don't go on with it. The simple fact is I don't have the time to read books I don't enjoy. I purchased the book and loaned it to a friend to read first because I was reading a novel and didn't intend to stop until it was finished. My friend brought this book back to me a few days later and said she loved the story. At first, I'll admit the family history did sort of distract me and made me wonder, but that soon passed and I think I did appreciate being able to connect who each character was or had been to Sheila and Allen. After I'd finished reading the book, I had nothing but the highest praise for Ann Rule's research in writing this story. True, there were a lot of questions I had to ask myself about Sheila. It didn't take a mental giant to figure out that Allen was a demented sociopath. It makes a person wonder what Sheila was thinking to stay with Allen after watching him deliberately kill the man and woman on the motorcycle. That would have finished me off, if I hadn't already been gone after he'd bankrupted my parents. She appeared so weak in the beginning and gradually gained insight and strength, only to turn around and do some really stupid things. But the learning lesson she had taken before she finally left should have forewarned her that Allen was not a man to be reckoned with. And still she persisted on dragging him back into court. What kind of mother would have allowed him around her two daughters knowing he had sexually abused one of them? I had a real problem with Sheila from the beginning, but at the end I realized no matter what her reasonings, she didn't deserve to die at the hand of some young punk that was killing her for the money. The characters involved with Allen were of low-life and low intelligence caliber. Sometimes it doesn't take a really smart person to be a superb athlete (look at Mike Tyson). Danny Rocha thought he was smart because he was good at golfing and winning thousands of dollars in betting with Allen. But he truly was a really stupid man. Allen was baiting him to be used and he didn't have a clue. I've worked for a short time in an abused women's center. During that time, I've seen a great deal and can truly understand why women run for their lives from abusive husbands. This is a very serious problem in our society today. It isn't until after a person will finish reading a book like this one that they sit back and think "Oh, my heavens!" Keep writing Ann Rule and I'll keep reading along with the rest of your fans.
