The best Crit Care Handbook
This is easily the best crit care handbook around. Well written chapters - the one on mechanical ventilation is the best I've read in a handbook - and hits most topics you need to know.
Downsides - it can use some updating, and I think most chapters can be a little more detailed. (better to have more detail than less)

Another good option would be Joseph Varon's Handbook of Practical Critical Care Medicine.

If you're going to buy a crit care handbook it should be one of these.

The Elephant of Thai Life & Legend
Published in Hardcover by Elemond Electa (2000)
Authors: Ping Amranand and William Warren
Amazon base price: $60.00
Average review score:

One of the finest "coffee table" books I have ever seen!
I bought this book in 1999 while in Bangkok on vacation from Saudi Arabia. During that fantastic 10-day trip, I had the opportunity to see some elephants around Bangkok and learned a bit about the special relationship that the Thai people have with elephants, much like Indians. The elephant is very highly regarded in Thai culture, and although animal cruelty toward elephants is known to happen from time to time, it is particularly rare. The 'mahouts" of Thai society are those who train and care for elephants, and there is, not uncommonly, a special bond between man and beast.

This book is beautifully published on acid-free paper, and contains enough photographs of the history of the elephant in Thai culture to keep you entranced for hours and hours. Exquisitly researched, the authors have done a tremendous service not only to the Thais, but to the elephants in their care.

If you have a soft spot for elephants or are fascinated by Far East cultures, this book is truly a "must have" title. It is a treasure!

Fantastic! A must in any environmental scientist's library
Gives a detailed explanation of the different properties needed for environmental modeling and even for chemical engineering design. Very well written, thought a little boring (is imposible to be funny with this kind of material). Puts you in the right track immediatly.

Excellent Research Source
If you are researching the Civil War, especially the practice of medicine and surgery during the Civil War, this is an invaluable source. This is a personal journal of a Civil War surgeon. As such it is told in his own words. The reader is regaled with day to day details of the surgeon's life.

Montale's highest work and his most pointed poetry
Although not as popular as his first period ("La ossi di seppia" through "La bufera"), Satura is Montale's best work, and his lyrics are considerably more pointed and biting than they were before. I'd recommend this to anyone who is interested in Montale's work, and the "Selected Poems" published by New Directions is a helpful introduction to his first period. My personal favourites: "Xenia," "La repertorio." This is a facing-page translation from the Italian done by William Arrowsmith, which he'd published after his death although the footnotes were added by another critic.

The Shakespeare Controversy: An Analysis of the Claimants to Authorship, and Their Championships and Detractors
Published in Hardcover by McFarland & Company (1992)
Authors: Warren Hope and Kim R. Holston
Amazon base price: $34.50
Average review score:

When will we admit that DeVere wrote the Shakespeare plays?
While making a compelling case for the Earl of Oxford as the writer of the Shakespeare plays, Warren Hope and Kim Holston have also provided an exemplary history of the Shakespeare authorship controversy. What's amazing is that DeVere's name hadn't become prominent in this controversy until the first part of the 20th century. Yet, the ground under the Stratford actor, Will Shakspere, had been eroding for nearly a century. The buildup to the Oxfordian-Stratfordian struggle (now taking place in the pages of Harper's magazine) is both dramatically and lucidly conveyed in this work. I was agnostic on this issue for many years; the combination of The Shakespeare Controversy and other research convinces me that DeVere's time has come. I highly recommend this book for its meticulous scholarship and excellent writing.

Tick Tock! Who Broke the Clock?: Solving the Work-Life Balance Equation
Published in Paperback by Innovations International (01 March, 2003)
Authors: Warren "Trapper" Woods and William A. Guillory
Amazon base price: $7.95
Average review score:

Great book for those seeking balance!
I've had the good fortune of attending a seminar by Trapper Woods in the late 90's and have waited for several years for him to write a book. He was by far the most gifted speaker I'd ever heard and his message was one that helped me immeasurably in my professional and personal life.

The message in this book is profound. Regardless of how much "stuff" we've accumulated in our lives, regardless of how much money we earn, the real key to happiness and productivity is to live in accordance with our values. What is most beneficial about "Tick Tock, Who Broke the Clock", are the exercises that force us to look deep inside and (sometimes painfully) grade ourselves on how we're measuring up. Based upon our deepest core values, we then establish activities that help us bridge the gap between where we are and where we need to be in order to live a life of congruency.

Thank you Trapper and Bill for this gem of a book. Your message is powerful and deep. Very very well done!
