Grow chick, grow!
The see how they grow series is yet another quality series put out by Dorling Kindersley (aka DK). Purchase them all if you can! Both children and adults will enjoy "watching" the chick grow. The last two pages are a pictorial summary of how the chick went from egg to eight week-old rooster.

A superbly designed and presented science book.
On The Spot: Volcanoes employs see-through windows and interactive features like pop-ups and flaps to show the young reader the wonder and awesome power of an erupting volcano. This superbly designed and presented science book is ideal for young readers ages 6 to 8. Also very highly recommended is the companion book On The Spot: Oceans as well as the other impressive titles in the Reader's Digest "On The Spot series" for children including Pyramids, and Space.

Educating your child re allergies: Key to reducing anxiety
What an informative resource for children (and parents) about allergies! This book touches on many types of allergies and simplifies the whys and hows of allergies from peanuts to pollens. My daughter (aged 5) was glued to the book as we read, in terms which she could comprehend, all about what happens to her eyes and nose and skin each SPRING. Educating children about their illness is one of the best things we can do to help them. A long overdue resource for children!

Our third favorite...
Not as great as the other books in this series but still fun for our 2 year old.

Excellent companion to any Hot Wheels selection
This book has been a favorite of my 3.5 year old son for a year and a half now. He enjoys the clear illustrations and straightforward text that accompanies them.

Each 2 page spread features one type of car--a convertible, a sedan, a vintage car, a sports car, a race car, a jeep, and a police car. The pictures are clear and detailed, allowing the children to learn more easily about the different types of vehicles. The book builds vocabulary and has helped my son (and me) a lot in classiying his growing hot wheels car selection.

One more advantage. Ususally the text of such encyclopedic books is not exactly linear--blurbs of information appear on different places on teh page, making it harder for the toddler to follow and understand the text. This is not the case with this book. The text is straightforward and simple and flows easily. Blurbs of additional facts and information are limited to naming different illustrations of parts of the car.

Truck Trouble no trouble for little ones!
I bought this book on a whim one year ago when my daughter was 3 years old. I wasn't sure if she would like a book about trucks. The first time I read it to her, she fell in love with it. She loves the pictures and story about the truck driver, his life in his truck (complete with bed), and his troubles on the road. I still have to read this book to her, now that she is four years old and into princess fairies. I highly recommend this book for all kids, even if you think they may not be truck lovers.

John's Truck
This is an excellent book for three and up. My son enjoys the realistic pictures and the engaging story.

Almost perfect
We've been looking for a dinosaur book for our dinosaur obsessed almost-3-year-old and this is one of the best we found. The illustrations are realistic without being too scary and the text is just simple enough without being useless. What this book lacks, however, is a pronunciation key (maybe everbody else in the world knows how to say these names, but some of them were lost on me!!) and some sort of indication of how the different dinosaurs described compare in size.

Good Intro to Dinasours
This was a good introduction to dinasours for a 3 year old. The pictures are very colorful and the text is kept to a minimum. The only difficulty was pronouncing the names of the dinasours so that my son could repeat them. I suggest adding the typical pronounciation symbols that you find in a dictionary.

good book for a simple introduction to reproduction
This is a good book for a very beginning introduction to reproduction for young children. It will definitely need to be supplemented with more detailed text and diagrams, but it's an easy place to start when you don't want to go into too much detail for a first talk. It starts out with bees and plants and moves to ducks, cats, and then humans. It uses the terms "sperm" and "eggs" but does not use any male or female anatomical terms (other than "womb") or show any diagrams of anatomy except for a superimposed drawing of a baby inside the uterus of a fully clothed woman. There is also a photo of kittens being born. That's as specific as this book gets. A good place to start for a child of about 4.

It's a good ice breaker
I was looking for answers to that exact question from my 4 year old and the book covers how a baby starts with a sperm and an egg. It started out great explaining how a bee carries pollen on it's legs from flower to flower creating a seed, but then the explaination becomes vague as it gets into the animals and humans and how the male sperm and the female egg get together to create a baby. The problem is that it answers the question where, but leaves the child with the question of How. It's honest and written to a 4 year old level with terminology that works well. I think it will help you break into a discussion of how that sperm gets to the egg.

A good young reader book
This was a good book with lots of color photos, drawings and maps. I think my children were a bit young for it (5&3)but they enjoyed the sections on what animals and plants can be found in the different regions.

Excellent child orientated book!
This is a fabulous book to have in your home. The book is broken into 3 main sections, World Geography, Fun Facts, and Amazing Animals. Each page covers a different topic with lots and lots of great color drawings. A fun picture book for those who can't yet read. The text is laid out in an easy to read format. With well thought out "Can you see?" or "Do you know?" sections, it makes it easy to spend time sharing this book with children. The information is interesting and brief, making kids want to read it themselves. Adults are sure to enjoy this book too and will definately learn a fact or two themselves.

Detailed & interesting fact book for young plane lovers
Each book in the "Eye Openers" series treats one subject, e.g., trains, trucks or airplanes. The books are divided into 2-page sections, across the lower half of which appears a large photo-like picture of a particular type of plane, train, etc. A short text on the left page identifies and describes briefly this particular vehicle. Smaller drawings across the upper half of the pages show details of the vehicle and its uses.

I was disappointed at first with the series based on its recommendation for children in the 0-to-3 years of age category. The subject matter and the format in which it is presented are more appropriate for older children.

"Planes" was a well-done example of this series. The illustrations of details point out features that are interesting and fun to identify on the larger drawing. In addition, most of the features that appear in the detail drawings also appear and are explained in the text.
