This book sux!!
an excellent compilation of often-overlooked characters
I couldn't allow Jeff Rovin's ADVENTURE HEROES to be represented by only one derogatory review. In this book, Mr. Rovin continues his ongoing quest to familiarize his readers with the wide range of science fiction and fantasy characters that have been presented throughout history. I might quarrel with some aspects of Mr. Rovin's alphabetical system (The tv show wasn't called "Lt. Columbo," so why should the entry have been under the "L"s?), and, of course, Mr. Rovin's selection process is, as always, occasionally questionable (Where were the kids from the tv show "Dungeons and Dragons"? Where was Kolchak? Why give space to a one-shot parody of Sgt.s Fury and Rock? If you're going to include Rama, then why not delve further into various other religions? How do some golden-age comic book adventurers rate inclusion while others do not? And will we ever be treated to more than casual glances at the literatures and popular cultures of other countries?), but this book remains an excellent example of its type; with so many characters to choose from, we can't expect Mr. Rovin to get to them all, and he does pretty well by the ones he includes. Aside from the above, the only real complaint I can offer about this book is that the cover features Doc Savage so prominently, but, since Doc was covered in ENCYCLOPEDIA OF SUPER-HEROES, the book does not discuss him at all. As noted, no book of this type can ever hope to be all-inclusive, but for a look at several American adventure characters of the first half of this century, most of whom Mr. Rovin had no space for, I strongly recommend Robert Sampson's six-volume series YESTERDAY'S FACES.

Time Waster
I found this book a complete waste of my time. I kept wondering when the story would begin. I oftened wondered why I continued turning pages.
I'll have to agree with an earlier reviewer (which I wish I had read before reading the book!) that questioned the the merit of this book being a bestseller. Mr. Clancy: quality, not quantity, please!
Tom Clancy's Op-Center Mission of Honor: Without Honors
I've been a fan of Tom clancy ever since the release of 'The Hunt for Red October'. Its a shame to say that the works of his successor to the Op-Center series, Jeff Rovin, does not possess the magic of a true Clancy novel.
The first two novels of Rovin already disappointed me because it became more political and less thrilling. No strikes were made, all talk. His third book really let me down because through this book, Op-Centers Strike Team has been permanently dissolved. Yes, a covert non-military team was made to replace it but the Paladin could never measure up to the standards of the elite Striker.
Another thing that disappointed me was the fact that Rovin deviated from one of the most popular trademark of a Clancy novel, REALISM. All this about Vodun and its leader doing magic and prophesies just don't cut it.
If Clancy wants his and Mr. Pieczenic's creation to retain its good reputation, I suggest they either replace or train Rovin.

Exciting-at-times thriller...but drags at points.
This recently added story to the "Op-Center" series was all right at points. This is the only "Op-Center" book I have read, but it has quite a few moments of high tension, but there are points where it drags and I constantly got lost. The end of the story was quite unusual and awkward. It sort of lets the reader know how it ends, but it leaves you hanging a bit. Check it ou t at your local library before you even try to buy it. Depending on how you look at this story which seems violent at the end, it could be a great buya and a great story, or it could be a great letdown. For me, it was half and half. I give this book a B-.
