This book is a "must have" for any Gene Autry Fan. It has great pictures from his movies and personal appearances. You also have a list and plot summary of all the movies, tv shows and a listing of all the songs he recorded. If you are into learning about America Favorite Cowboy, the trivia questions and answers are great. I highly recommend this book if you love Gene Autry. As the author says in his introduction, "chances are that you are an avid Autry Fan if you purchased this book". A Fitting Tribute to the Legendary Singing Cowboy.

This book is an absolute masterpiece. It is filled with thrilling insight, and I have read at least ten times through. It is great for film fans both young and old. There is no collection that is complete without it.

Being the granddaughter of Tim Holt, I know a lot about him. But for someone who doesn't, this is the best book to read and learn about him. My favorite part of the whole book are all the wonderful pictures! David Rothel is a great writer, and he did a wonderful job writing this book! "I was five years old...I tried to sit up straight in the saddle as (my father) did, and every once in awhile I'd look down at my new cowboy boots...and I made up my mind that I'd never wear regular shoes again as long as I lived. I was going to be a cowboy for the rest of my life." Those are the words of Tim Holt later in his career, quoted in this magnificent book by author David Rothel. Tim Holt was a great "B" western movie cowboy star of the 1930's-1950's. His post-WWII western movie series that ran up until 1952 has to rate as the best series of "B" westerns ever made, with good acting, directing & production values, a lot of action, and great on-location photography. In many cases the RKO films made from 1947-52 should be more accurately referred to as "A-" westerns. The stories are always enjoyable and pleasing, and you can tell the good guys from the bad guys. Tim Holt was a fine actor and also appeared in several first class films such as Orson Welles' "The Magnificent Amersons," and with Humphrey Bogart in "Treasure of Sierra Madre." In his westerns he presents himself as a warm, easygoing & friendly cowboy with a good sense of right and wrong, a real hero. He is often drifting between jobs when the stories begin. This book is the first and only book about his life and films. I was born after his last westerns were filmed, and happened to discover the movies in the mid-1970's, after Tim Holt had already passed away (at age 54). I took an immediate liking to him as he presented himself in the movies, and when I later went to libraries and book stores to try to find information about him, found nothing except a few brief sections in several western film books. One paperback I found, "Great Western Heroes," published in the 1970's, gave more information than the other books, but not enough. Tim Holt has been a western hero to me since I saw the first movie, and it was a real joy to discover that this book existed when I found it on amazon.com. It's well worth the price. The book is well-written and is solidly bound with excellent print & photographic reproduction, has a great color cover of a more recent painting of Tim Holt, and is just loaded with a treasure trove of information on him. Childhood photos, reviews of all his films with accompanying pictures, copies of newspaper articles and his obituary, interviews and commentaries with his co-stars and fellow actors and family members, even copies of articles and interviews from western film magazines of the 1940's-50's. And some mysteries about his family life, his work after he walked away from acting (at age 33!) and did the rodeo circuit and shows, and the cancer that killed him are revealed here too. It's impossible to really express what a great book this is, and the author David Rothel deserves all the credit for the extensive research and effort he put into this magnificent volume. Highly recommended.

Rothel has done it again. Fresh thoughts about old familiar places. He is tune with the spirit of the old west and has a rare understanding of the Hollywood machine. He translates this world into everyday language for lovers of the west and westerns like me. I can feel the rustle of the sagebrush and feel the Indian eyes watching me as I leaf through the book. Well done!

This is an excellent reference book, scrapbook, and trivia book combined. Excellent pictures.

I first aquired this book about 20 years ago. I have always been a Lone Rnager fan, and when I found this book, I was completely thrilled. David Rothel has done a wonderful job in getting the facts about the Origin of our beloved hero. The interviews Mr Rothel did with the likes of Jim Jewel, George Trendle, and so many others who were involved with the creation of this great character, provide the reader with first hand information on how the Lone Ranger came to be. The pictures in this book show the begining of the radio show in a makeshift studio, to the television years to the big screen. The background information on how it was all done, keeps you wanting to go on for more. The detailed explanations of where Kemosabe came from, the origin of the Lone Ranger Creed, and much more, lend to some fasinating reading. This book tells it all for the devoted Lone Ranger fan. I am lucky enough to not only have this book, but to have it autographed by John Hart and Clayton Moore. If you are a fan of this great American Legend, try to get a copy of this book. You will be glad you did.

When I was born in 1953, my first memory of television consisted of Westerns Television shows as well as movies. I loved them at the time but after time, I grew blaise.

Just since last year, I have been faithfully watching "HGWT" each Saturday morning (like a child) and became fascinated and.... admittedly a little enamored of Richard Boone.

This month I have just read "Richard Boone: A Knight Without Armor in a Savage Land" by David Rothel. What a fascinating and complex man Richard Boone was, and I was delighted to have it affirmed how much I suspected that the character of "Paladin" was the real Richard Boone.

The book is filled with interesting photographs, interviews along with summaries of all the "HGWT" episodes. I was astonished to learn that Richard Boone was also starring in three others tv series. I had never heard of "Medic", and wish his anthology series could be televised. I always respect the work of repertory theate. And what a group of performers he had selected! Typically, TV execs aired this anthology series opposite "I Love Lucy"...unfair competition.

It was heartwarming to read of his wife's memories of her 30+ years with Boone. She has alot of guts and staying power!

This is the perfect book for any devoted fan of TV westerns!

various as the Menonites to playing the Japanese game of Go, an
expert of fine wines, well tailored colthing, and of course a ladies man about town. James Bond? No Paladin! Paladin was James
Bond before James Bond hit the big time. Here was a series way ahead of it's time. Tell me which western produced in that covered such subjects of the mental illness and the conflict of
being a part of two cultures? Richard Boone brought life to the
roll as Paladin. It is sad that the series lasted "only six years" but maybe it is for the best because those six seasons
was some of the television the world has seen.

I was surprised to receive a large, very well researched book about Boone. Its pictures were also beautiful. It's build with interviews with those who have known Boone. I had doubts about this method, but it worked fine. I think Boone had the charisma to be a great star, but maybe his looks did not allow it. Anyway, if you are interested in Boone, you find all essential facts about him in this book. I recommend it.
