I thoroughly enjoyed every page of this book. I found it to be one of Judith Rossner's lighter works.

I definitely recommend reading this book if you're a fan of Judith Rossner, or if you're just looking for a great book that will capture your attention and keep you intrigued until the very end!

I have read most of this author's books, but just now read this one which is one of her older novels and I loved it.....Nadine and Dianne are close friends even though they are opposites. After disatrous first marriages, they marry siamese twins, Eddie and Amos....They move to a small New Hampshire town to raise their children......."Attachments" is really the story of a woman (Nadine) whose dreams and hungers are satisfied in strange, fascinating ways.....This book is well written (as are all of Judith Rossner's books) and keeps your interest to the end.

Judith Rossner is one of my absolute favorite authors and part of her talent is an incredible scope of imagination. This book is about a woman who falls in love with a siamese twin--at the beginning she is 9 months pregnant, has gained 75 pounds and is over 6 feet and her husband and his friends catch her doing housework in the nude and horror flickers across their faces so that she realizes she can't stay there with her husband any longer and hops on the back of a much younger man-stranger's Harley Davidson--sounds way too bizarre to connect with and yet that is the power of Rossner--she has such a deep level of understanding of the human condition that the weird circumstances and events soon become things we don't even question because the characters are so well drawn and complex and believable. If you can get your hands on this book do--my 3 favorite Rossners are this, Emmeline, and Looking for Mr. Goodbar--all so vastly different you would not even believe one woman could have such breadth of skill and yet she does.

I read this on a recent holiday - ideal for reading on the beach and dreaming of a woman who could cook you gourmet italian meals every day of your life! Do such people really exist or is this why the genre is fiction. I learnt a lot about food and New York style neurosis. Got a bit slow towards the end but overall a good light read

If you liked Marilyn French's Her Mother's Daughter you'll love this book. Judith Rossner does a wonderful job developing her characters. You'll feel like you really know all of them when you're done reading the book. I really can't recommend this book highly enough!

The story is a classic is all I can say, and deserves well known recognition for the real truth behind the story that many people can't see because of the excessive sex and swearing that goes on. Truthfully, this is at least one of the best and most intruiging stories I have ever read on all accounts. The dioluge isn't like that of so many other stories, where the characters don't talk like real people but like rich and artiqulate writers with a deadline to meet. Even the relationships and the issues they cover are completely realistic. These things aren't usually pulled off very well by a writer for numerous reasons. But probley my favorite part about Looking For Mr.Goodbar is Theresa *or Terry*. She's the ideal protaganist, really, because she has human faults and human issues, and she's not like the typical good girl hero we are supposed to love through and through. However, she's not particularly bad either. Instead she is caught in the middle going from side to side trying to make sense of where she really belongs.
But I must say that even the ending, which is very depressing and morbid, doesn't leave anything to be desired. In fact, I think it was the perfect and inevitable ending to one of the best books of yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

It's the 1970's and the world has lived through the sixties and exploded into a one big wild and careless party. The vestiges of responsibility and family begin to tear and no where is it better illustrated than in depicting the life of Theresa. Theresa is a lonely single girl, teaching underprivledged kids during the day and cruising the bar scene looking for love after dark. Living in the shadow of her seemingly fabulous sister, Theresa born the shame of spine curvature (eventually corrected by surgery), the indifference of her parents, lack of friends, and the pain of empty love relationships. Theresa during the day, Terry is her night time persona who takes the young teacher to levels she never dreamed off as the story unfolds. Theresa is at odds with the good girl vs. bad girl images and yet is spurned by physical pleasure and the thought of a lasting and pleasurable relationship. The book's end is shocking and inevitable as Theresa looks for love in all the wrong places. A cautionary tale which rings true today, a copy should be given to every Washington intern.

Theresa is a teacher by day, and a bar cruiser by night. It's the seventies, and everybody's doing it, and as often as they can. I first read Goodbar a few years ago and have read it a total of 5 times since. It's a haunting story, one that gets into your blood and won't let go of your concious thoughts for days after finishing it. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in reading about the inner turmoil women face when confronted with situations where their sexuality faces off with their morality. I would also like to point out that the film based on this book and of the same title confronts the issues of sexual independence with stark and vivid imagery. I would recommend reading the book, though, before seeing the film as the book delivers a real kick to the theoretical groin while the movie doesn't delve as deeply into the mind, the heart and motivation of its main character.

Like all of Rossner's books, August was very entertaining. I love her sense of humor and the characers she develops are very interesting. I rediscovered Rossner recently when I was in a used book store and purchased Perfidia. I read Looking for Mr. Goodbar years ago and remembered that is was well-written. Perfidia was delightful and the best story I had found to read in years. After reading Perfidia, I went directly to the library to check out any book Rossner has written. They have all been excellent. In fact, they are so good, that I am planning to purchase all of them and reread them every year or so.

This is my favorite book by Judith Rossner. If you're psychologically-minded, this is a must-read.

I read this book while on holiday in Goa, India and I must say that it kept me spellbound from start to finish. What a page-turner this novel is! If you're at all interested in the workings of the human mind and if you want to see what complex psychotherapy is all about, then read this. I feel sorry for the reader who gave this book only one star, complaining that nothing happens. The story told is a masterpiece of psychotherapy-writing and should be included as a required text in psychotherapy institutes'training programs.

emmeline is based on a true story which was featured on "the american experience" a few years ago on pbs. it's about a sad and lonely ostracized old woman exiled by small new england minds and victorian attitudes. terrific book. i would read it again.

What struck me about the book was how it ended the way real life does - not in a pat unrealistic romantic way, but having to come to terms with yourself and your decisions in life.

Emmeline is one of the best novels of fiction I have ever read. I read it because I knew Judith Rossner was a good author, but was astounded at how this book kept my interest. If a book is not exceptionally good, I usually do not finish it. Emmeline was so good that I convinced my sister to read it (she usually only reads heavy reading like James Mitchner). She read it in one day. She loved it too. The ending is so very shocking, and really caught me off guard. I would read it again if I had the time, but want to read another Rossner.

This book was very well written but as the story continued it became increasingly more morbid and depressing. So much so that I would not pass it on to my daughters or friends to read. I kept reading in hopes that Madeline would turn her life around and find some happiness and sanity in a world where she had not known fulfillment of any kind. The story never did become uplifting and the reader is left feeling that Madeline relayed to us her thoughts, feelings and insights but refused to let us, the readers, know if she ever did have a happy life. Questions stirred in my mind....did she succeed in life...did she find happiness, love and contentment? I felt it totally unfair that she shared so much with us throughout the book simply to refuse to disclose what happened after she moved on.

This book was a bit slow-moving in places but it still grabbed me -- but I like Judith Rossner's style of writing. The ending was disappointing; it felt like there should be more. If you like Judith Rossner's other books, including Looking for Mr. Goodbar and Olivia, you'll like this one. If you're new to Ms. Rossner's work, I'd start with Olivia and if you like that one then give this one a try.

It took me a little while to grasp the direction of this novel but about half way through it suddenly grabbed me and I couldn't stop reading until I had finished the last page. I found the characters very believable, thoroughly examined, although I would have liked to have seen more sides from mother. I thought the ending to be poignant and simply, just about right. Madeline was a strong character in a realistic, believable sense. Happiness is not always found in career, love or stability. Most of the time it is found in discovering one's own independent self. That is the message I derived from this book.
