Not a real calculus book
"Thomas and Finney is remarkably easy to read." I agree. It's easy to read because there is not much of substance there. It's basically a recipe cookbook. The authors are not mathematicians and don't truly understand some of the more advanced concepts (in the last parts of the book.)

The problems are not challenging, and do not lead to any new insights. For a book with great problems and insightful discussions of the key concepts, I recommend Swokowski's Calculus.

Yet it is a decent text for what it is intended to do, which is to teach engineers. That's why the two stars.

Calculus And Analytic Geometry - Thomas and Finney
This text since its first edition way back in the 1960's has been held with high regard. The authors have sailed smoothly and presented the vast and ever increasing scope of calculus in the most pleasing manner which is indeed very reader-friendly.The authors also go down memory lane and recall age old instances in the history of calculus. The treatment of conceptual topics such as limits, derivatives,Integration as the area under a curve etc. is marvellous. Majority of the text also include computer related theory and problems. Critically speaking, the only drawback if any is the level of some of the exercise problems of which further some are outrageously simple. Nevertheless, this book should be recommended for all those readers and the mathematically oriented for learning calculus the way it ought to be learnt.

Extraordinary Text
I always try to find 'good'textbooks like this one.I highly recommended to anyone taking calculus and related courses. This is user-friendly, self-study text book on differential and integral calculus.Someone said it merely hones the technical skill,it would be true for some extent. But I am sure by using this book you'll mastered the techniques and applications of a great branch of mathematics. I would also highly recommened to high school and colleges to use this book.I already used it to learn calculus myself and it made a great help.I am now studying electrical engineering and still using it.People are saying calculus is hard to grasp but I thought they haven't try this text. Finally if Issac Newton see this book,I am pretty sure that he will be amazed by seeing textbook which he invented the subject himself but never presented in those beautiful and elgant form. This text is the bible of calculus.

hefty...but pretty good
I like this book because it has an excellent format and a logical progression of topics (quite standard). It has answers for every other question and provides NUMEROUS each of section questions as well as end of chapter questions, of various degrees of difficulty.

The explanations and expositions are clear and concise and should have you understanding most of the material with some thought and effort. Because let's face it: no book will learn for you or magically transform itself into your ability without some effort (however much or miniscule) on your part. I find mathematics fairly easy (I'm an engineer), so this book was quite good because some of the questions do take a bit of time (some challenge is always good!). A few of them are VERY difficult, though I've yet to run into one that is by my worth unsolveable. But this is dependent on your mathematical ability.

Altogether, not bad and will teach you introductory calculus and multivariable claculus with some useful appendices as well, including some complex numbers (but not enough). Damn thing weighs about 10lbs though...:)

Great
I used this book for my single-variable integral calculus course and I must say it did an excellent job of teaching what the instructor couldn't. The problem sets are good, and if the solutions manual wasn't riddled with errors, the combination would be outstanding.

Just another calculus text
I've had the 'pleasure' of experiencing numerous calculus texts over the years - starting in high school in 1987 and until now (mutlivariable calculus) and, as a math major, I'm sure I'll get to see a few more. I witnessed the growth in the use of graphing calculators and Computer Algebra Systems (CAS - MathCAD, Mathematica, Maple). Thomas' Calculus makes good use of CAS applications and even includes a CD with some 'good stuff'. But it left out all the historical text from the book, expecting the student to find it on the web. Personally, I enjoy reading about the development of mathematics in-line with the presented material and knocked off a star accordingly. The second star I took off was because the reference materials in the front and back of the book are not as helpful as they had been in other texts I've used.

Good text for self-study
I've used this text to teach myself calculus, basically reading the text cover-to-cover and doing about half the exercises. I've found it fairly easy going - the text is well written and contains enough worked examples that you can do most exercises without too much trouble. I would advise against spending money on the Student's Solution Manuals (Sharf/Weir) though - these do not contain enough detail to be of much help with the exercises that you get stuck with.

The Best Calculus Book Ever
This book is the best calculus book I ever had in my possession. It is very detailed and it also gives you lots of examples. There are also a lot of problems that you can work on for practice followed by the odd answers at the back of the book. This book can take you from calculus I & II to Multivariable Calculus. I think that this book should be recommended to anyone taking calculus in college.

the epitome of mediocrity
This book is very poor. I give it a poor rating because the solution manuals that compliment this book are very mediocre. The solution manual that came with the book (It came bundled with the text at my college bookstore) seems as though it was hastily put together. Some answers are wrong, have typos, or even lacking altogether. The solution manual only covers chapters 1-12. The remaining chapters are covered in another manual...that's where the above problems are thrown into plain view. In the second solution manual, some answers don't match, are missing, or wrong. For example, chapter 13 has two sections that are flipped around, which shows the haste in bringing out this book. I have nothing good to say about these texts. When Calculus 3 is over this semester, I have 660+ pages worth of TP...that's the only way I feel the purchased can be justified.

Recommed This Book With Reservation
As all of you know already, all (except some exceptional textbooks by distinguished authors) Addison Weslely Mathematics books are well known for their terrible excercizes, explanations, lessons, and their contents. There are a few reasons why the above statement is true, but you can figure them out by yourself. Also, lack of information that hinders AP Calculus B C students further emphasize that this is a book made for the novice mathematicians of extremely low ability in problem solving and thinking. Overall, this book is not a book that can be used in an Advanced Placement Calculus BC class; and indeed, this book would a terrible choice for a short calcululus class at a university that offers a good quality mathematics education. This book definiately receives a "poor" recommendation; its contents must be enhanced for it to receive a better recommendation from the instructors and learners in the United States.

Professional Review
This calculus book is an excellent choice for college bound mathematics students in high schools. It covers every topics needed to succeed in later math courses and future; it has ample real-life problem situations that not only hone mathematics skills of the students, it also helps them to understand most of the abstract concepts of calculus. This book is suitable for use in any AP Calc courses (AB or BC). Despite many special features in this overall superior book, I do not strongly recommand this book. The reason is that this book uses very minimum colors and graphics that can help high school students to be interested in the materials in calculus; besides, graphics with colors CERTAINLY helps everyone to grasp the abstract "stuff". If you are a high school chairperson, and you are considering to purchase this book for your school to use as an AP Calc text book, I recommand you to look for a newer book.
