Human Inference: Strategies and Shortcomings of Social Judgement
Published in Paperback by Prentice Hall (1985)
Authors: Richard Nisbitt, Lee Ross, and Richard E. Nisbett
Amazon base price: $34.00
Used price: $122.00
Average review score:

It is the best work on the subject.
Nisbitt and Ross bring to life the field of judgment and decision making. It is a scholarly analysis of the subject. The book is essential reading for every pschologist, trial lawyer and any other person who must understand how people make judgments and decisions.

A Must Read
This is a landmark work in the field of social psychology, but it is also of great interest to a more general audience. The subject of the book is how humans think and make decisions. Since we all do this, and how well we do this has a considerable impact on our quality of life, this is one book that I believe should be part of everyone's education. The book is written for undergraduate students in social psychology so it is heavier reading than popular psychology books, but it is correspondingly more detailed and informative.

Beautiful look at a gorgeous state
Atkeson & Ross capture the beauty of this state in their photography and words. I lived in Oregon 20 years ago and every time I look through the pictures in this book, I'm reminded of its beauty. I never get tired of looking at these photos. The book is split up into several sections: The Oregon Coast (which in itself is a rare treasure), the Columbia River, the Western Valleys (including Salem & Portland), the Cascades (including a couple shots of Crater Lake), and Central Oregon.

While the only true way to view Oregon's beauty is to visit, this book gives an excellent idea of what it's like to live there. Atkeson has some truly marvelous and at times breathtaking pictures contained in this book.

Enthralling beauty of known and hidden locations
Oregon III is a gorgeous display of the Oregon coast, waterfalls, fast flowing creeks, brooks, rain and mist. The photographer has sumputuously captured the essence of Oregon: her unending supply of known and hidden bodies of water are a wondrous thing that can be found throughout this stunning state, vividly presented in this outstanding volume. The Pacific Ocean is detailed in all its grandeur of cliffs, jutting rocks, and chilling waters. The undulating coastal beaches offer thousands of rich greens, cool, damp browns, ocean blues and whitecap whites in unending discoveries that take the travelor's breath away at every bend in the road, every view to be found. When a travelor heads inland from the coast, there is the Oregon coastal range to meander through. Off the beaten path are "lost" creeks and water falls that tumble along as they have for thousands of years, all but forgotten unless the travelor stops and walks through the trees, sometimes only a few feet from the highway. Here one may find rich mosses embracing the rocks and boulders, pebbles, and fallen trees that border on a creek hurrying somewhere, laughing with the breezes. So enchanting, one might expect to see fairies or other mystical creatures presiding over a lost kingdom. The photography and text invites the reader to imagine these enticing treasures with deserved pride. The creators of this book take you to the Cascade Range. Don't be surprised to find deep crevices with water trickling from above. If you decide to to traverse such a crevice be wary of the freezing waters that occupy these fissures. The rocks and boulders will be slippery with wet algae or the thousands of years of being splashed on from the falling waters. The coolness will invigorate you as you find yourself succumbing to the pleasure these photographs provide for you. The photography and beautifully written text will take you away momentarily, but you won't find any real satisfaction until you've experienced the reality which is Oregon. When you view this book, you'll know you've had an overwhelming experience, and everytime you open its cover you'll feel Oregon calling, calling. calling..............

A superbly researched and written biography
Richard Hillary was a decorated fighter pilot who flew and fought in the Battle of Britain during the some of darkest days of World War II. He became an ace pilot and was shot down in September 1940 by enemy fire, experiencing severe facial burns. During a painful recovery he wrote the wartime classic, The Last Enemy under the pen name David Ross. He returned to flying but was killed in a Blenheim on January 8, 1943, at the age of 23. Richard Hillary is a superbly researched and written biography of a remarkable young man and highly recommended reading, especially for anyone with an interest in World War II, the Battle of Britain, and the young men who stood against a seemingly overwhelming tyranny.

Best Biography I've read
A biography of a fighter pilot and author.

This book expertly captures the emotions of the time in which it is set whilst giving us an in depth look at the life of one of our Battle of Britain heros.

It is extremely well researched and puts right many of the inaccuracies of previous publications. If you have read The Last Enemy, then this is a 'must read'. It will appeal to a broad spectrum; not only those interested in aviation, history or the lives of authors and pilots. This is not your standard military aviation book, it is full of facts, yes, but it is also an exciting, emotive and most of all, enriching read.

I have never read a book on squadron history but will definitely read this authors book to be published next year on No. 603 squadron (Richard Hillarys squadron based in Edinburgh).

Finally, don't be put off by the size of it....it's a great read with plenty of photos (some never seen in the public domain before)!

An adorable and funny book for Rugrats fans.
The Rugrats all crowd around to listen to Grandpa Lou tell a story about the fierce pirate Blackbeard. When Grandpa dozes off, the kids decide to make up their own ending. They raid Tommy's mom's closet and dress up as pirates. Before they know it, they find themselves in the days of the real pirates. Angelica is mistaken for a princess and is kidnapped by Blackbeard, who hopes to collect a large ransom. Now Tommy, Chuckie, Phil and Lil, and Susie have to rescue Angelica. They team up with Grommet, a cabin boy whose father has been missing ever since his ship was captured by Blackbeard. I reccomend this cute and hilarious book to anyone that's a fan of the Rugrats cartoon.

Valuable observations by a European visitor.
The author, an Austrian Captain of Hussars of Scottish descent, traveled widely throughout the South in 1863 and 1864, observing the Confederate Army at war and viewing the Confederacy and its culture generally. The present work, originally printed in a British periodical, appeared after the war.
The modern reader will likely be jarred by Ross' frank admiration of Southern mores and institutions, but his perceptive observations of wartime conditions remain a valuable document (augmented by interesting parallel annotations by the more famous Colonel Fremantle and others). Harwell's admirable editing of this acclaimed 1958 classic is retained in this highly readable 1997 reprint.

Thought-provoking, eye-opening, and harrowing.
Scary stuff. This is not a job I think I could do. I was amazed by the immense variety of family distress situations faced by the court. Judge Ross seems to maintain great powers of objectivity and analysis in the face of a near-constant stream of the most painful decisions one could have to make. I was stunned by some of the descriptions of what many kids before his court endured before they got there. Fascinating book. I hope more are forthcoming from Judge Ross.
