My teacher at my tutoring school has this book. He said the Allyn & Bacon is his second brain where he stores his important Grammer and Usage techniques. I was interested with what he said; so I bought one myself from Amazon. This was the only reason I bought this book.

However, after I had received this book, I found this to be quite useful for the SAT II writing test. It would be a great reference guide whenever I need help with word usages, paragraph formats, punctuations, critcal thinking techniques, etc.

This book is wonderful. If I can give more than 5 stars, I would.

The Allyn&Bacon Handbook is the most invaluable reference book I have ever come across. Originally purchased for guidance on formal composition, the book has helped me with everything from letter writing to revision. It contains valuable information on just about every writing topic. This book is an excellent companion for anyone taking an English course.

This book has helped me with my college English papers. A very practical reference guide for English students. The book is also direct to the point that even my middle schooler used it for his English class.

This book was given to me as a gift in junior high school. It was and continues to be a great gift! I used it in high school and throughout college. I still refer to it once in a while. It is easy to use and provides a suffient amount of examples to meet your needs. It is easy to read, not too wordy in explanations, and it has a user-friendly format. I highly recommend it.

I don't know if I should call myself lucky or not by actually having the author (Behren) of this book as my Writing 2 teacher. All I can say is that this book is okay (just okay.. no better and no worse), but Mr. Behren is certainly not a good teacher. Anyway, this review is about the book not the author. All I can say is that I'm reselling this book back to the bookstore!! I certainly don't want to keep this one!

This cut down by more than half the time it has taken my students to learn to write summaries, integrate sources, understand argument, and write syntheses.

Many of the readings are also interesting and productive, especially those on Folklore and Obedience to Authority. I'd teach it in combination with a course reader, though, since there's almost no attention to the process of helping students find their voice and write more beautiful prose.

But no one book can do everything, and I plan to keep teaching this one. My students like it too -- with its focus on arguable ideas and the wonderful step-by-step breakdown of the writing process.

As an english instructor at the university level, it is difficult to find a book that addresses all the issues one faces in a freshman english class. This book covers all the basics for grammar and sentence structure, plus it progressively takes a young writer through all the stages of writing from brainstorming to editing. The assignments included in this book help students learn the craft of writing and the language of the lessons reaches all levels and abilities. A truly fantastic addition to any instructor's arsenal!
