This is a Fantastic and Unique Historical Novel You'll Enjoy
I read this book the first time in 1985, eighteen years ago.
The book is a historical fictional novel. The people and events that took place actually occured. The author filled in some of what may have been said, although she researched the book thoroughly on location and refered to some diaries and letters
for dialogue.
The reseach took place over many years. I spent many long days at the libraries where she did her research as a teenager. We
also visited some of the locations of the events and places in the novel. The novel is a fast paced, riveting read. It is not a book that you'll want to put down. The Battle scenes are painted vividly with words, and it is an important piece of American History that you'll not want to miss out on. Frankly, I am surprised it hasn't been made into a major motion film yet... This is definitely a unique one-of-a-kind novel you must have to add to your bookcase or library, especially at a time in our own renewal of freedom and patiotism in history. It makes you appreciate what early Americans endured to make this country what it is today. Men will like this book for the intriguing historic battles, and women will be drawn into the romance and life in early America. It's a very entertaining way to spend some time. I hope you will enjoy this book as much as I did. Happy reading!

Green's Sleuthing Reveals much about Shakespeare
Martin Green's WRIOTHESLEY'S ROSES IN SHAKESPEARE'S SONNETS, POEMS AND PLAYS adds significantly to our information about Shakespeare, of whom few have been able to tell us very much. The book captures the social milieu of the times, mentioning almost everybody who was anybody. It focuses on the well-educated, politically active, and sexually ambiguous coterie surrounding the Earl of Essex and their influence on Shakespeare's knowledge and concepts. Green's thesis is that the third Earl of Southampton, Henry Wriothesley (pronounced Rose-ly) was the "thou, my Rose" to whom the sonnets were addressed, the inspirer of Shakespeare's red and white and Rose imagery. One cannot but be impressed by the amassed evidence, starting with the Wriothesly coat-of-arms and the architectural particulars of H.W.'s Titchfield home. For all who love sleuthing, this book is a must. Stylistically a delight, partly because of Green's ready, wry humor, the book argues its case with the cogency of a skillful lawyer, anticipating and covering all points of view. In his insightful interpretations of Shakespeare's writings, Green highlights the puns and dark conceits that he says were there for artistic reasons and not out of legal necessity to avoid revelation of homosexual or sodomitical content. The book concludes with a short, lyrical chapter describing an initial meeting of Shakespeare and Henry Wriothesley, so beautiful that one ardently hopes it was so. Mr. Green is also author of THE LABYRINTH OF SHAKESPEARE's SONNETS, London 1974.

The Ballad Of Billy Badass & the Rose of Turkestan

Buy more than one copy--it's so good, you'll want to share!
Billy Badwater is one of the most appealing fictional characters I've ever met. In fact, all of the characters in THE BALLAD OF BILLY BADASS AND THE ROSE OF TURKESTAN are so fully realized that the book is replete with major characters and rich lives that continue well beyond the page. There are almost no minor characters because any character that comes under Sanders' skillful pen for a couple of sentences springs to life by such adept description and wise choice of detail as to defy understanding of quite how the hell Sanders manages to invest so much in each character time after time.

The book wove the seriousness of its subject matter brilliantly with generous, laugh-out-loud humor. Grandfather has to be the sweetest dead curmudgeon in all of literature. I'll never look at a crow again without wishing that Grandfather would suddenly say something insulting from the crow's beak and ride on my shoulder for a few sarcastic miles.

A wonderful romance takes place in the midst of intense action that keeps gathering momentum and doesn't let go of its grip on the reader as the story avalanches down an unearthly mountain of terror and something eerily vulnerable and wholly of this world while being altogether unworldly rises to battle the threat of chaos with the frailest and most potent of powers.

Best of all, even better than the fabulous characters, the heartwarming romance, a dead grandfather anyone would love to posthumously adopt, and a kickass plot, best of all is the overall sustained level of incredibly terrific writing. It would be a disservice to merely call William Sanders a great writer because he surely deserves the appellation of one of the world's greatest living writers. Grandfather, if looking over my shoulder, would dryly remark "One of the greatest, dead or alive, for that matter." And Grandfather knows his stuff.

Great Book!
I have read most of William Sanders books, and have enjoyed them all. The Ballad of Billy Badass and the Rose of Turkestan did not disappoint me one bit. This book should be on everyone's bookshelf, and in every public library.

That's How It Is
No one writes about American Indians better than William Sanders--and that's because he is one, yes, yet it's also a credit to the power of his talent. Sanders proves that again with THE BALLAD OF BILLY BADASS AND THE ROSE OF TURKESTAN, a remarkable novel that effortlessly blends mystery, romance, humor, suspense and bone-chilling, supernatural horror.

Billy Badwater and Janna Turanova are the most unique and intriguing pair of lovers I've ever had the pleasure to spend time with. Life has been hard for both Billy and Janna; but no matter what life has been for any of the people in this story, all paths lead to the Nevada drylands, and the terror that has awakened there--and none who walk away will be untouched or unchanged, including those who read this novel.

Who are these people who must save the world, and therefore, save you and me? A Cherokee man of no ambition, recently discharged from the more shadowy regions of the U.S. Army, with a passion for big motorcycles and small, beautiful women; and a highly-educated, independent-minded, sweetly desperate woman already at war with the faceless governments who have poisoned the earth and victimized us all, regardless of where you live and who you believe you are.

Seamless prose, detailing so intricate it takes your breath away, and original, memorable characters are only some of the hallmarks of this wonderful book. I will especially never forget the craziest, zaniest, loveliest wedding; and THE best grandfather, either living or dead, whether a blue jay or a crow.

Let William Sanders take you on this extraordinary journey. He is a writer so gifted, wise, honest and brilliant it's a road you will always remember traveling.

Nasgi nusdi, as the Cherokee say: That's how it is.

Good but a little vague
If your looking a relationship survival guide, this is not it. It's exactly what is says it is. It simply defines styles. It was a little vague and didn't offer any in depth solutions. But it made sense in it's simple way, and was definitely good reading and interesting though.

Stimulating...Thought Provoking.....Useful Tool....
This book is exactly what I've been searching for. I've been a Hollywood producer, writer and editor for a major television network, for the last 21 years. Needless to say, I've encountered many different types of personalities. This book has been very useful in my understanding of various individuals. In a business of communication, this is of the utmost importance.I strongly recommend reading this book. I wish you the luck I've recieved after applying the knowledge I've consumed from this literature....

A most enlightening and enjoyable read!
This book gave me exceptional insight and understanding. After 45 years in two marriages I now finally understand what makes relationships work. I highly recommend this book to anyone who seeks answers to difficult questions about their own relationships. This is a wonderful and easy to read book!

Genius in ascent
The first two volumes in this series are fascinating looks at Sturgeon's development, well worth reading for those who are already fans of his. The third is where Sturgeon really starts to hit his stride, though, and this fourth volume is the first that I can wholeheartedly recommend to those previously unfamiliar with his work. Not every story here is superb; some are a bit dull, and some are overlong and predictable. But there's enough excellent material here to make it a solid introduction to Sturgeon's work, and the fascinating end-notes on each story by Paul Williams will make you wonder why other authors' complete-works collections can't be as thoroughly researched or as interestingly annotated. "Maturity," the first story here, is a masterpiece in the old sense of the word: it marks Sturgeon's transition from journeyman to master, while prefiguring _Flowers for Algernon_ (and predating it by a good 20 years). Other high points of this collection include the non-fantastical "A Way Home," the horror story "The Professor's Teddy Bear," the hilarious "Tiny and the Monster," and "Thunder and Roses," which is still relevant after 55 years.

Brilliant!
Four volumes in and no clunkers yet, this guy had something special . . . and his Hugo and Nebula winning short story is still about thirty years away. Wow. If you've been following along all this time let me just say that this volume will give you more pleasures than any writer had any right to give you, most writers have a couple truly amazing short stories within them and while not everything Sturgeon wrote was genius the sheer amount of good stuff here is simply astounding. "Thunder and Roses" has to be one of the most humane stories ever written and others like "There is No Defense" or "The Professor and the Teddy Bear" (if it doesn't scare you, you must not have a pulse) stand up remarkably well. Again, you owe it to get every volume of this series and save it for the generations to come, we have so few literate writers these days and those few that we have deserve to be remembered and enjoyed. Sturgeon is one. Read him.

Yet another alltime GREAT
This guy knew how to write about love, in all of it's phases, yet never or rarely descended into mawkishness. And a lot of his considerable output is classic. Buy it if you have to skip lunch for a week. If you've never read Sturgeon before, you're in for a treat, language of a grace and power to rival Bradbury and a way of moving along jauntily that compares with Henry Kuttner (Lewis Padgett) and Alfred Bester.

Negative, Realisitic, and Gritty, but the best book ive read
I was obsessed over the movie for a long time and when I read this book it had the same theme and characters but it was vastly different than the movie. The ending was almost the same, but it was shocking how much they did to each other. Everyone seems to think it was about materialism only. I disagree. It was about investing twenty years of your life and wanting something to show for it, and I think their anger and revenge stemmed more from an attitude of 'How dare you waste my life' or 'How dare you ruin our family' that it was more the main theme than the house. The house just happened to be caught in the crossfire. It definetly makes you think, and is by far one of my favorite books.

This book and movie changed my life.
It sent the message that material things can be dangerous in any relationship. I have read this book many times and each time I read it, it reinforces that idea.

Hard to find but worth the search
It's Adler's best book, and yes, it's better than the movie. A funny, scary look at how far people can go when everything is at stake.

Annoying
The reviews for this book are extensive, with most recommending this book for beginners, which I agree with. The book seems especially appropriate for people who may otherwise think SM is a bizarre and scary activity that appeals only to deviants. I think it would be an excellent way of introduction for a vanilla partner. What's good about this book-for me at least-was almost completely overshadowed by the cutesy, juvenile attempts at humor that are found thoughout the book. Perhaps it "lightens up" the subject matter, but I found these attempts at humor tedious. Also, the illustrations and B&W photography is dreadful. They look like 3rd generation copies. The illustrations of knots and bondage-among other things-are pretty much useless since they're so unclear they can't be followed. While whether one appreciates the writing style is a subjective matter, there's no excuse for poor quality illustrations and photographs in a how-to book. Unfortunately, these are major flaws in what would otherwise be a good intro. to SM. I would expect better quality for a book in this price range.

Practical, wonderfully insightful and a kick to read
"Screw the Roses..." is the answer to a thousand curiosities the uninitiated might have about the psychology of the world of SM and of its citizens. In addition to the thorough exposition on the mindset of SM people, it offers buckets of practical tips and advice for all, from beginner to experienced player/participant. The humor begins with the title and the disclaimer just inside, and extends all the way to the end, making "Screw the Roses..." probably the most amusing book available on psycho-sexuality. It is written from the authors' perspective of male dominant/female submissive, and though the rationale for doing so is presented respectfully and tastefully, it occasionally takes a bit of mental effort to apply an appropriate transposition. The pages on the basic psychology alone make this a worthy purchase; the coverage of so many other topics (tips & techniques, furnishing your dungeon/playroom, etc.) make this a book not to be missed if you have even the lightest interest in SM.

Indispensable book
The deeper I got into this book, the more often I found myself saying "YES!" in agreement with Philip and Molly's philosophies about doing SM. This, along with SM 101 by Jay Wiseman is truly a "must have" book if you're serious about wanting to learn what SM is all about.

The book covers virtually every facet of play from descriptions of what each "type" of SM players are, looking out for the "wannabes," negotiation before playing, bondage techniques, flogging, spanking, and even humiliation.

Illustrations and photos are sprinkled liberally throughout the text and help to make the information that much more easy to understand and follow.

Since this book is now a few years old (I understand an update is forthcoming), the resource section is a bit outdated. Otherwise, this book is outstanding!

A little pricey for a paperback but still worth it
For those of us that are interested in life beyond the original "Little House" series, this is a great book to own/read. I think that it captures the character of Laura and Rose because the stories and articles are by their own hand.

I really enjoyed the photos throughout this book because while Garth Williams' representation of the Ingalls family is lovely, it is nice to see what they really looked like. Even though they are in black and white you can imagine Pa's eyes twinkling.

Rose and Laura have very different styles, but both styles are very good. I especially liked Laura's articles because they paint a picture of farm life. The sections range in length so if you one have a few moments of reading time here and there it isn't necessary to worry about reading it in one sitting (though you may want to!).

Other things I recommend are the Little House series (of course!), and the series about Rose that was published recently (it has its slow parts but it was written by someone close to the family so there is a lot of accuracy). If you want to read more of Laura and Rose's writing this book is the perfect solution even considering the high price.

Loved this Book!
I loved the short stories by Rose Wilder Lane, (especially "Innocence") and Laura's pieces are also touching & well-written -- definitely recommended for the die-hard Ingalls-Wilder fan and for anyone interested in good short stories. Rose Wilder Lane will really impress those people who haven't read anything by her before.

Feed your Little House Craving
This was the book 10 years ago that introduced me to the fact there was more out there beyond the Little House books written by my favorite author and her daughter. After reading her "Missouri Ruralist" writings, it puts the theories of Laura not really writing the Little House books to rest. It also introduced me to the thrilling storytelling of Rose; so much so, I broke my cardinal "no lending of Little House books" rule to disasterous results. I'm glad to finally have a replacement.

Rose's interview with her father drives me nuts! You will find yourself wishing, after reading this and other snippets on "the man of the place" that Laura and Rose would have spent more time writing about him.

should be titled Antique Roses for South Texas
I thought the book would address more than the South Texas Area. Rather misleading title- It is difficult to find information on roses that do well in zones 6-9.Too many pages devoted to flower arranging and potpourri making.

Good News and Bad News
The good news is that this book identifies antique roses that are not seen that often and has some very good pictures of them. There is also some interesting discussion about how some of these roses were found and identified by hobbyists. The bad news is that I was expecting a lot more information on husbandry. For example, there are only two pages in the book dedicated to growing antique roses in containers, but there are no less than 52 pages (about half the narrative of the book, discounting the rose list in the back) dedicated to indoor flower arrangements with roses, drying and preserving roses in displays, etc., which has absolutely no interest to me. I'd recommend this book as a supplemental reference on antiques, relying on other sources for care information.

Start with this book if you are interested in old roses.
As a horticulturist and landscape designer, I am asked to do seminars on antique and old garden roses. I always recommend this book as an additional source of information. It gives a lot of good information on propagation, care, and recommended varieties. Especially valuable is his list of roses in the back of the book with suggested landscape uses. This book won't disappoint you.
