A lot of the flower resources I use don't tell you whether you can use this particular flower for cutting. This one tells you specifically whether or not you can, how to, how long lasting they are, etc. Also, I was tired of finding a beautiful flower and after much research find out it blooms in winter or early spring. There is a blooming season chart in the back of this book that shows you when that flower blooms in your growing region. Great pictures, good info on climate, sun needs, problems with pests, etc. 90 annuals are listed. I just wished there were more listed and that it would tell you the specific type of plant in each picture.

The Legend of the Hummingbird: A Tale from Puerto Rico

I use this book to teach elementary school children about Puerto Rico. The story as well as the illustrations teach the reader about the history and climate/vegitation of Puerto Rico. The last five pages include information about Puerto Rico's history and traditions. More examples of legends are also included, providing a starting point for the children to create their own transformation tales.

I first read this book in 1973. It was the inspiration to a lifelong interest in the Wars of the Roses. Although it is really a novelization of the old ballad "Most Pleasant Song of the Lady Bessy," I thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend it for any young girl who is interested in history from a personal perspective rather than cut and dry history. I've also read other books by the same author and have enjoyed them as well. These are not deep, philosophical works, but are quite enjoyable.

I was really excited when I got this book because before this I had never seen a book on Margaret of Anjou, or more correctly, Marguerite d'Anjou.
I was disappointed by this book. It is adequate enough by portraying Margaret's career in England. It skates over things, doesn't go into charectar depth at all. It barely mentions Elizabeth Woodville, or even Jaquetta Woodville. It also makes it look like half the Lancasterian men at court were in love with Margaret and begging her to betray the king with them and she was the virtous women who refused.
In truth Margaret was not such a nice women. While I do disagree with the contemporary oppintion that she was a villain she did do her fair share of sins. I am a huge fan of Margaret's but it's true.
Pretty good story, but a better read is Sharon Kay Penman's The Sunne in Splendour for an in-depth hisorical fiction of many people in the Wars of the Roses

Ruth Perot has brought a complex historical period alive in The Red Queen. Through careful research and a graceful writing style, she has enabled all the characters involved in the conflict of the War of the Roses to become human beings with frailties and self-doubt, but the the potential of changing history and becoming heroes. This is particularly true of Perot's development of Margaret of Anjou as a character in her historical novel. The reader comes to know Margaret not only as a historical figure but also as a woman who grows from a 16 year old girl into a mature woman. Her multi-layered personaltiy is that of a mother, a wife, a queeen, a politician, and eventually a heroic figure. She is set against a backdrop of political intrigue and unspeakable cruelity, but ultimately remains an intelligent woman, who much like Thomas More, is a woman for all seasons.Additionally, Perot's understanding of language gives the reader a real feel of the speech of the period. For readers of historical, this is a book that will delight them while giving them insights into history.
