I like this book.
I have most of Jeanne Rose's books. This one is a fun, wonderful to use and try book. Some of the recipes are very old. Some are of her own formulations. They are all fun to use, and or try and they are fairly easy to make and play with. If you want a simple book, with lots of recipes, with information on the herbs used, and also which are simple enough to change for your self, and gives you a good start for it, you want this book.

Herbal Body Book and HERBS & THINGS
I have many of Jeanne Rose's great herbal and aromatherapy books. The "Herbal Body Book" and her original "Herbs & Things" are available in a beautiful new 2nd editions. These are two of the most fantastic herbals and aromatherapy books that were ever written. Fantastic, quirky, informative, delicious and filled with easy to follow body and skin care formulas and recipes for health that were invented by Jeanne. She writes because she knows about the subject matter intimately. These are invaluable reference books that every lover of herbs and aromatics should have in their library. For the Information of Ask Jeeves, the Herbal Body Book has been rekpublished in a 2nd edition through Frog, Ltd in Berkeley, CA and Herbs & Things has been republished by Last Gasp in San Francisco, CA.

Wonderful book for the herb lover, and the body lover
I'm 14 years old, and am just discovering the world of herbs, and ofcosmetics. I found this book very useful in both areas, because of thewonderful descripitons, and the useful, simple recipies. Oh, also, the version I read was the 1976 version (from the library of course) so I imagine that this newly updated copy is even better!

a must
This book includes a glossary of specialized terms, of herbs, and recipes. Everything you need from hair product to belly product for pregnant women is inside this most useful companion. The most interesting is that you may learn to make your own blend of herbs to target specific conditions and not only follow a limited number of recipes.

Buyer beware - dangerous advice in this book!
I don't like to pan books, but unfortunately Jeanne Rose has written a book containing many dangerous recommendations. The Aromatherapy Book is not a good book for anyone but advanced aromatherapy practitioners with a solid knowledge of essential oil safety.

Some of the dangerous suggestions in this book include using highly irritating and sensitizing cinnamon bark oil for head lice, putting sensitizing Peru Balsam on broken and chapped skin, and baths and skin treatment with lemon verbena, an oil so phototoxic and sensitizing that it has been banned in European perfumery. Rose even suggests using sassafras oil and tea without mentioning that both contain a potent carcinogen and are FDA banned.

It's a pity that Rose paid so little attention to safety, because there are some very creative uses of essential oils and lots of interesting stories and history in the book. There are sections on spiritual and emotional uses of essential oils, vendor listings, and a nice chapter on natural perfumery. Just remember that if you choose to buy this book, you must doublecheck all of the essential oil uses against some very reliable safety information.

Aromatherapy Applications and Inhalations
I just read a rather scathing review of Ms Rose's book. Quite frankly I have studied with her at a two day intensive. She is one of the leaders in the aromatherapy revolution here in the US and has more published titles on the subject than most in her field. She is a marine botonist by education and is also very, very dedicated to the aromatherapy industry. She helped organize NAHA, the Aromatic Plant Project, and has also done a lot of behind the scenes advocacy work on keeping the ethical standards high of producers of essential oils.

Yes this book is not as well organized as it could be, I believe this is her first attempt at publishing. I use this book in my classroom, because it is a little easier to use than the more techincal books because it is on the primer side which makes it excellent for not blowing away someone who knows nothing of aromatherapy. It is excellent in that its quick references in the front of it are fast and easy to use for identification of the correct eoils on various disorders. I am sorry the reader was disenchanted with the publication. I find Jeannie to be a very matter of fact person who should be getting more recognition for her work in our field. Indispensable Aromatherapy Primer
It was because of this book that I started my avid interest in aromatherapy which led me to taking advanced education with Ms. Rose and gaining my aromatherapy certification.

You will not find alot of recipes in this book, but it is an excellent book for looking up particular essential oils, finding their properties, cautions etc. for both the beginner and advanced aromatherapy student. The aromatherapy reference charts listed in the book are indispensable and there is even a Chakra and Color chart as well. It is direct, and written in layman's terms. I myself have 2 copies of the book because I wore out the first one!

I find Ms. Rose's personal stories that are weaved throughout the book delightful and because of her particular style of writing - have every book that Ms. Rose has ever written.

Well past its prime.
Don't be misled by the attractive book cover. In comparison with current books on making natural skincare items, this one is moldy in both content and appearance. You'll get much better information and recipes from: 1) 'Make Your Own Cosmetics' by Neal's Yard Remedies. 2) 'Natural Bodycare' by Julia Meadows. 3) 'Natural Beauty at Home' by Janice Cox.

A wonderful starter book into making herbal cosmetics!
If you already incorporate herbs into your life, this book is wonderful for making your own cosmetics using items you probably already have in your kitchen. Definitely worth the price...I still refer to mine today!

This Woman Has MAJOR Image Issues
This person has ISSUES! There is a chapter on "Fat and How Not To Be" which is very angry and hate-filled towards ANYONE even slightly overweight! ("There is no such thing as a slightly fat person - either you are or you aren't")
Once I found this chapter, i was really in shock and considered getting rid of the book all together. I haven't (yet) and I'm still not sure if I can really take anything in it seriously after discovering this chapter. Also, the "solutions" presented are sooo unhealthy - the author speaks of fasting for 4 days and only breaking her fast for a couple of cold glasses of wine.
The herbal part of the book was okay, but this chapter just disgusted me beyond belief.
