Documents of a horrendous crime
It doesn't matter if one is Catholic or not, one thing that must be agreed upon is that the abuse and mistreatment of children must not be tolerated. Therefore, it is disturbing to read such an account as this; that one can see the mechanisms that were systematically used to protect the perpetrators of these crimes, rather than the slew of victims.

This book is NOT a book condemning Catholism or Christianity. I am not Catholic myself, but I have enough respect for Christianity and the Catholic Church, that had it been merely thus, I probably wouldn't have wasted my time reading it.

With the persistance of the staff of the Boston Globe, though, much of this information, which was previously off-limits, has been opened and researched. This book is a product of that research, and without drowning the reader in tons of details, goes into many aspects of this story - how the story broke, victims' stories, profiles of some of the most heinous perpetrators, the Catholic culture around Boston, and the heirarchical structure of the Catholic Church, and the effects this scandal has had on the Catholic Church in America and in the world.

As late as this has come to many people, I am glad that somebody had the nerve to pursue the story. For those who still want to believe that this isn't a major problem, remember that what is written here is just Boston's story, and just a small bit, at that. The priests who committed these crimes are criminals, and should be recognized as such, both inside and outside the Catholic Church.

A painful read, but a must read
1. This book is an excellent investigation into what occured in Boston involving the Catholic church and sex abuse.

2. It is also an excellent book in explaining the power of the Catholic Church in the culture and politics of Boston. This power may explain why Cardinal Law and others were able to get away with such abuses of power.

3. This is an extremely painful read as it details exactly what occurred to these children while they were being abused.

4. With that said, THIS BOOK IS A MUST READ FOR ALL CATHOLICS!

Excellent resource
The authors have a done a fine job compiling the facts about the sexual abuse crisis that is rocking the Catholic Church. Although the authors present the facts in a balanced way, you will be morally outraged by what "responsible" people of the church are capable of. A must read for anyone who has any doubt about the authoritarian, anti-intellectual, and medieval nature of the Catholic Church.

A complete reference loaded with sample code.
This is no book for people who want to learn ASP. They should first read some other book, but after that, they need this book. This is the most complete ASP reference I have seen, loads of components are documented in a way people can understand and there is lots of functional sample code. All code is done in both VBscript and Jscript. Pittfalls, do's and don't are very clearly noted in the text and pages about win-nt configuration have screenshots. Yes, this book has made my life a lot easier. The only reason I am not giving it 5 stars is the fact there's no 2 small chapters on VBscript and Jscript, so I still need to pick up the beginnersbook. Like all wrox-books no paper is wasted, and every page (1200+) is filled with small fonts and margins as small as the printer would allow, which makes the pagecount even more impressive.

Core Methods, Objects Reference.. this is invaluable!!
As an intermediate ASP programmer many times you need to find reference for how to do something in a hurry. Well this book is the answer. Concise clear well organized. Good reference coverage of XML to the end. I've had it for a couple months and it has proven invaluable to me and my team for reference. This book is not designed to teach you to code elegantly and efficiently, but even if you are a seasoned ASP programmer.. don't pass this one up. Definitely a good buy for your reference shelf.

All The ASP You Need
Generally, I buy Wrox books to get an overview of the terrain, then buy an O'Reilly nutshell book for reference purposes. ASP 3.0 Programmer's Reference is the exception that proves the rule. It's excellently put together, easy to navigate, and unusually broad in scope. You get a lot for your money.

One more thing: since ASP programmers tend to be less steeped in technology than, say, C++ programmers, it's especially important to have a reference that's easy to use and clear on every point. That's the best part about ASP 3.0 Programmer's Reference -- you never feel like you're lost (unless you're totally unfamiliar with the language, like the gentleman below.)

ABOVE AVERAGE TEST TAKERS BE CAREFUL
These books are ok but they aren't for everyone. I test well on standardized tests and took a practice test and scored very high. The more i worked in this book, the slower I became and the lower i scored. Take a practice test-If you are someone who scores high on standardized tests usually, you may just want to take the test on adrenaline and your good wits. That is what I will be doing next time, as I did on the SAT's as well. These books help lots of people I'm sure, but this is one case where someone scored significantly lower due to practicing methods not necessarily needed.

May be helpful--but the practice tests are not full-length
The tips and strategies in this book may be helpful for some people. But in my opinion, reading about such tips and strategies will probably not help as much as taking plenty of timed, full-length practice tests. That's the area in which this book falls short. True, the book offers practice tests, and the questions and explanations for the answers are generally well-written. Unfortunately, the tests are not "full-length," despite what it says on the cover. An actual LSAT has five multiple choice sections, of which only four count toward the score, and a writing sample, which does not count toward the score but is sent to law schools. The practice tests in this book only have four sections and no writing sample.

The omission of the writing sample can perhaps be forgiven, if the authors of this book are correct when they say that the writing sample will never affect the decision of any admissions committee. The omission of the fifth section makes these tests a fairly poor simulation of the real LSAT, on which you have to complete all five sections, because it is impossible to know which one will not count. The LSAT is in part a test of endurance, a test to see if you can retain your mental abilities after being subjected to difficult questions for nearly three hours. The practice tests in this book may help you figure out how to answer questions, but they cannot help you learn how to keep your mind working during that last 35 minutes. If you buy this book, just be aware that the publishers are apparently using a very unusual definition of "full-length" when they display this term prominently on the book's covers.

Tough read, but the sample questions and tests will prepare you for the real exam.

bad bad bad bad bad
i couldn't get past page 3 of this book. it's bad. don't waste your money on this one.

DRIVEL
This is not a good book; if you want real mystery, read P.D. James, Conan Doyle or a host of others.

Robinson's character is gimmicky; the plot is gimmicky; his writing style is gimmicky.

If you have insomnia, however, this would be a good book to purchase.

Also, comparing Robinson to Grisham is like comparing a painter of Elvis Presley velvets to Leonardo Da Vinci. Robinson's not a real writer, let alone an artist.

An excellent third in the series
Kevin's obviously built on his experience and feedback from his first two novels, researched, and come away with a nicely rounded third in the series. I hope there are more.
Again, we have 2 1/5 reviews with no content and lots of venom. Hmm.

THIS BOOK IS NOT WORTH IT!
DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. IT'S NOT WORTH IT. I AGREE WITH THE OTHER REVIEWER. IT'S NOT REAL MYSTERY AND IT'S BORING. WHAT ELSE CAN I SAY? ROBINSON SHOULD HAVE DONE SOMETHING ELSE BESIDES WRITING.

A Real Page Turner!
I meant to read the first couple of chapters before turning off the light and going to sleep, but SPLIT SECONDS just grabbed me and wouldn't let go. I read it straight though, and finally turned off my light at 3 a.m.! Stick Foster is a paraplegic newspaper reporter who doesn't let his wheelchair interfere with his life. He's not a superman or anything, just a smart, determined, and honorable guy who just won't quit. He reminded me of the kind of protagonists Dick Francis creates...people of character whom you'd love to have as friends and business associates. The whole cast of characters seemed very real to me, but sadly, Robinson killed off my favorite one!

I enjoyed the fast-paced plot about a computer hacker bent on creating a disaster for NASA, and the book's climax had my heart pounding, but I was just as fascinated by the nuts and bolts of Stick Foster's life in a wheelchair. I had a lot of misconceptions about that before reading this great mystery.

I can't wait to read MALL RATS, the second book in this series!

Overall Good Sleuthing
I think is it sad, that a worthy first effort has been dragged down in the reviews by some sick individual. (Have a look at all three in the series - Split Seconds, Mall Rats, Matter of Perspective - always two short, meaningless 1/5 reviews). Whoever wrote these reviews must have something against handicapped people and is obviously doing this maliciously, as evident by their anonymous and content-free reviews. The rest of the reviewing community shuns you fool.

Anyway, back to the review: The author obviously has chosen the character of "Stick" so he can write from a point of view that he knows. As mentioned in the trade reviews, the ending can be a bit pat, but overall a good first sleuthing. I want to give 4 stars - but to counter balance the below useless reviews, I am awarding 5.

Not worth one star!
I looked at a few pages and gave up. If you want to read a bad book, buy this thing! If you want a good book, look for another writer 'cause it ain't Kevin Robinson!

Exactly! What _is_ wrong with a wheelchair detective?
Here this person goes again: Why would a person review if they only ready the first page ???
Unless *gasp* they didn't like the author, or what the author stood for. Pretty pathetic.
I would definitely agree this is not the best novel from Robinson, but review objectively, not brainlessly.

What's wrong with a wheelchair detective?
I haven't read this book and was trying to decide whether to purchase any of the Stick Foster mysteries, when I saw the review that seemed to think that having a detective in wheelchair is taking "PC" too far. HARDLY! People in wheelchairs do all kinds of things and it's about time we appeared in literature and other media! To make your main character disabled has nothing to do with PC. Maybe the author is in a wheelchair? What difference does it make if the character is too? Now, if ALL the characters were disabled, then that would a little much. Life is filled with diversity, why not our novels?
