Attention Lovecraftian Horror Fans
This is the eleventh book in Chaosium's Cthulhu Cycle series. This volume features tales of Lovecraft's most well-known creation, the octopus-headed entity, Cthulhu. Included are the foundational stories (i.e. "The Call Of Cthulhu" by H.P. Lovecraft and "The Black Island" by August W. Derleth), some rare reprints (i.e. "Some Notes Concerning A Green Box" by Alan Dean Foster) and some interesting new stories of Cthulhu in the modern world (i.e. "Rude Awakening" by Will Murray). In any collection the stories are of varied quality but I enoyed the majority of the works collected. If you are a reader of Lovecraft's Mythos fiction then this is a must for your library.

MEMORABLE LETTERS
These letters written to his family by a foot soldier serving in France during World War I graphically remind us that war can not only be hell, it is hell.

American raised and professionally a scholar at Stanford University Robert Pellissier nonetheless felt the pull of his native country, France. This may well have been his reason for enlisting in the French army in 1914. He was sent to the front where he fought in the Alsace mountains.

Masterfully written these documents relate in gripping detail life and death in the dank, frigid trenches where French soldiers are bombarded every day by thousands of German shells. Pellissier tells his family of the horrific sights he encounters almost hourly, and of the ill treatment of civilians by the Germans. His professorial eye misses nothing of the bravery or the cowardice.

He was wounded on August 29, 1916, and died soon after. His letters were penned from officer training school, from the front lines, and from the hospital. All are testimony to a man who loved and died for his native land.

I Once Had a Pet Preying Mantis
Published in Paperback by Mosaic Press (1995)
Authors: Len Gasparini, Leonard Gasparini, and Robert Dykstra
Amazon base price: $9.95
Average review score:

inspiring love of poetry and of nature
I purchased this book because the Journal of Canadian Children's Literature said that every library and school in the country "should have it". I would enlarge that recommendation to the US and Canada, e.g. garter snakes are almost everywhere.

Gasparini is a masterful poet better known for his adult volumes and plays. He presents "nature lessons in verse" that I still find echoing in my mind. My nephew found it hilarious, a neighbour's child memorized several poems to recite to her class. The poems do not demean the reader with anthrocentricism. Instead, they ignite your curiosity with sophisticated prosity and a masterful command of poetry as an art form.

Spark a child's imagination!
This is the first science fiction book I ever read! It changed my life as I read about the expolits of two children living in a Mars colony. The young boy and girl discover that there is, indeed, life on Mars. This is an excellent book to introduce science fiction to a child. Well-written with science facts yet the two protaganists are likeable and interesting. If you love science fiction, share this with your children and spark that same love in them!

Addressing the pervasive prevalence of brutal extermination
Collaboratively compiled and edited by Samuel Totten (Professor of Curriculum and Instruction, College of Education and Health Professions, University of Arkansas, Fayetteville) and Steven Leonard Jacobs (Associate Professor and Aaron Aronov Chair of Judaic Studies, Department of Religious Studies, University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa), Pioneers Of Genocide Studies is a scholarly, 617-page compendium of learned essays contributed by a variety of informed and informative authors concerning the phenomena of twentieth-century mass murder -- especially as inspired, sanctioned, or perpetrated by governmental states. Addressing the pervasive prevalence of brutal extermination from the perspectives of psychology, sociology, theology, and law, Pioneers Of Genocide Studies also attempts to answer the question of what must be done if genocide is ever to end. Pioneers Of Genocide Studies is a seminal and highly recommended contribution to academic reference collections in the fields of 20th Century World History, Social Science, Cultural Studies, Holocaust Studies, Judaic Studies, and Political Science.

Excellent book for educators.
As an educator, I think this book is one of the best I have read on this subject. It is factual and covers both social and medical aspects of HIV infection and AIDS. Its focus is scientific but it explains a wide range of technical concepts (eg current drug therapies, methods of detection) in suprisingly easy and straightforward terms. It has a very humane feel to it as its authors are both AIDS physicians and scientists involved in the searching for better therapies. I think this book can truly help people learn about AIDS.

THE SHERMANS ARE AMAZING SONGWRITERS!
This is a magnificent song book for anyone who loves Disney or Sherman Brothers music. They wrote the songs for MARY POPPINS, CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANK, JUNGLE BOOK, THE ARISTOCATS, CHARLOTTE'S WEB and THE SLIPPER AND THE ROSE. Nine of their songs were nominated for Oscars. Twice they won an Oscar. They're just the greatest. I love this song book and play the music in it all the time with my kids. Some of their other great songs which are included here are "It's A Small World", "Feed The Birds", Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious", Winnie The Pooh", "You're Sixteen" and "Tall Paul". These brother songwriters are the greatest. I loved "Walt's Time" too!

Nice individual meditative version
St. Leonard's Way of the Cross is reflections by St. Leonard of Port Maurice on each station of the cross. The pamphlet includes a very short introduction regarding St. Leonard; an opening prayer; a line drawing of each station with a short reflection of the station by St. Leonard; a short history of the Stations of the Cross; and a handful of prayers appropriate for the Way of the Cross or prayers before a crucifix. This volume is intended for personal rather than group use; as such, it can be an excellent choice.
