A wonderful coverage of the roads, the state they wind through and the minds of the authors and photojournalists.

creative ideas, not for children
These are true rustic retreats for adults. Just know this is not for children's tree houses or play houses. These are very rustic retreats, such as a lean-to to use as a nature retreat, or for the shack-like building the size of a garden shed for sleeping in as a weekend getaway,(sans electricity or toilets).

The one I loved the most was a rustic arbor for grapevines that was basically 4 poles with a semi-roof--for the vines to grow up and over the top to form a roof. The idea of sitting under it with a table and relaxing outdoors was quite tempting. However, where I would get the rustic tree trunks to make this is beyond me (but it looked wonderful).

There are no photographs. This is not a glitzy-beautiful tempting type of book. It is about the nuts and bolts of really building one of these structures. I suggest browsing this book first to see if there is a structure you are interested in.

The plans are quite detailed and seem more than adequate to use as building plans.

Rustic Retreats
We have enjoyed all the Stileses garden house/project books and consulted "Sheds" when we were planning our own shed. We especially appreciated the step by step instructions and clear drawings. We were still deliberating over plans when we saw "Rustic Retreats" in a book club ad and we ran all over greater Seattle looking for it. We must have bought the first copy in Washington. We proceeded to build the cover garden house in the fall of '98, finishing the shingles this summer. It was originally intended to be a storage shed but was so wonderful that we added chairs and a bed. It was our first building project and what a treat!

the one book to inspire you
the drawings in this text are very detailed yet artful. the prose is kept simple without much extra unnecessary information. the authors leave ample room to improvise on your own, but you could certainly follow the instructions to the letter and finish up with just what is described. the designs in this book are so varied you will very likely find a structure that appeals to you. apart from the designs, the building techniques and materials described are so varied, that many can be interchanged for most of the structures described. i found myself flipping back and forth and was inspired to use elements of multiple designs in just one structure. a very well done and handsome book!

Uh Oh, Now For The Other Side
First, let me explain that I absolutely adore Gale Gand's show Sweet Dreams and I love her Butter, Sugar, Flour, Eggs cookbook. I've made a lot of her recipes and they always come out great. But, this book has too many ingredients that are hard to find, unusual, time-consuming, (you get the picture). Also, it doesn't help matters that our home is totally alcohol-free. I'm probably not the best choice to write a review for this book, however, I am an avid cookbook collector, baker, cook, etc., and I felt I needed to cast an opinion to keep the reviews "fair and balanced."

Robust,Rustic Food For Beer/Wine/?
I've for long time been a fan of Gale's, but only recently discovered her partner, Rick through his amazing new book, "Amuse-Bouche."

So wanted to check out more of his culinary wizardry, and found it to be of same high, creative quality.

This is quite a collection of hearty, flavorful food, meant to stand up to beer brewery atmosphere. Yet it is all very stylistic and well prepared.

To date few dishes prepared are winners, e.g. Roasted Vegetable-White Bean Chili; Grilled Portobello Mushrooms with Polenta Cakes, Mesclun, and Balsamic Sauce; Roquefort and Pear Salad with Grapes and Spiced Pecans; Provencal Lamb Shanks with Roasted Vegetables, Roasted Garlic, and Tapenade.

This is fun food to serve during winter and those fire in the hearth nights when a hearty meal and drink hits the spot.

Just an unusual, well-done, useful work from cover to cover. Don't forget the great desserts by Gale!

I've used it so much I need to buy a new copy
I have gotten so many great meals out of this book. I recommend it completely without reservation.

Some of my favorites include the lamb ragu, the pear salad, and sweet ptotato- apple puree.

I have used it some much t he binding has broken and I need a new copy.

The only other books that come close in use are the Hugh Carpenter books.

Firetowers, Lookouts & Rustic Cabins for Rent
Published in Paperback by Bear Mountain Press (01 March, 1997)
Author: Carolyne I. Gatesy
Amazon base price: $14.95
Average review score:

Very attractive
This book doesn't merely wax prosaic on the attractiveness of renting a firetower. It gives very well structured and encouraging information to allow you to do it, as well as useful tips on what to bring and how to get to each tower. The pictures are amateurish, but that adds to the appeal - they're like pictures I'd take if I was perched above tree level at N,000 feet.

Wonderful places to visit
It is certainly fun "window-shopping" those mountain top cabins and firetowers. I am certainly going to spend the night in one this year. They appear to be some of the most magical places on earth...and are available for a song...

great book
great book for beginners easy to read information lots of step by step details

Natural, rustic and simple
This 'older' book shows you in simple diagrams how to build rustic log structures and furniture the original way. I have used the methods to build a fantastic fence from trees harvested from my own property. I have also built most of the birdhouses. This book is not really for building a log cabin. It is the greatest book of folk art for rustic log furniture and structures I've ever seen.

European Bakery Breads from a Machine? Who Knew?
If you buy this book you will use it all the time. Ours lives next to the bread machine, because there's just no point in walking across the kitchen with it. Clear instructions and helpful tips are given on how to make hundreds of yummy breads using your bread machine, or your bread machine and oven. Those of you without baking stones might want to pick one up (I just sent someone this book and a stone--both purchased right on this site!--for a gift) because you can get superb round loaves with the stone. Here at our house there is always foccaccia, and usually one of the great breads made with a starter (like Levain or Whole-Wheat Walnut). Don't want to fuss with your stone? Brother Juniper's Santa Rosa Struan is excellent, and the best peanut-butter and jelly sandwiches in the world can be made on their recipe for Whole Meal Bread which is made with yogurt and cinnamon for a touch of sweetness. We eat the Mangone Family thin-crust pizza once a week, and the Deep Dish pizza with a Durum Wheat crust is a pizzeria-style impress the kids favorite. Is your mouth watering yet?

Whenever I make bread from this book for dinner parties people always ask me where I bought it. Is there a more convincing reason to dust off your bread machine and try again?

Easy to use bread cookbook with outstanding results.
This is a book for the breadmaker machine owner who wants to branch out a little and try something different. The techniques and ingredients section alone (the first 87 pages) is worth the price of the book (speaking as a novice breadmaker). The results of the recipes I have tried have been outstanding. After I made the Pao Doce bread (p. 288), my husband commented that it looked so beautiful, he would have bought it immediately if he had seen it in a bakery. It tasted just as good and was simple to make. Many of the recipes call for using homemade starter--something that I had always thought must be difficult but that turns out to be as easy as throwing a few ingredients in the breadmaker and letting them sit overnight. Highly recommended.

A Favorite at Family Gatherings
The recipes in this book are great! I discovered this book two years ago shortly after purchasing my bread machine. I was discouraged with the recipes in the manual so I was thrilled when I tried the recipes in this book. My family loves all the different breads that I bring to the family gatherings. I have tried the baquettes -- a favorite, challah, wheat bread, french bread italian, and many more. Everyone loves all of them! I recently purchased this book as a gift for an upcoming birthday. Three relatives purchased this book based upon my comments a few years ago. Enjoy!

A nice look at one style
As I just wrote in a review of Cabin Fever, this book, too, is a delight to look at. But it is limited (as its title says, of course) to one style that is a bit more rustic than what we have in mind. Still, this is a lovely book to peruse. As we gather information on vacation homes, our favorite book is a new one called Second Home, which includes visits to everything from oceanside homes and lake cottages to mountain cabins. Second Home also includes information on how to shop for a second home, how to decide what location is right, and tips on building, decorating and so on. I've never met a vacation house book I didn't like, and I like them all. But Second Home is our favorite because it has such variety of home styles and helpful tips in it.

Not simply for those who love the Adirondacks region
Yes, some call the look "Adirondack," but the style is, of course, much broader than that-a true American classic with variations that have abounded for decades and decades in many parts of the U.S. Personally, the book reminds me of the classic camps and vacation lodges of the Missouri and Arkansas Ozarks. So, no matter where you live, if you love rustic style, you'll be inspired by this book.

Excellent depiction of "Adirondack Style"
Ann O'Leary's "Adirondack Style" is the kind of book you curl up with in front of a roaring fire with a cup of tea. You can dream about a rustic retreat that makes you feel comforted and relaxed. This book is not to be missed if you live and love the Adirondacks.
