When Summer Laurence was only 17 years old, she falls in with the wrong crowd and becomes pregnant and addicted to drugs. After she spends 30 months in jail and has her baby taken away, Summer is deYtermined to turn her life around. Armed with a PHD, Dr. Summer Laurence finds herself in Osuma, Washington getting ready to start her dream, opening a counseling facility for drug addicted children. What she didn't count on was her benefactor's nephew, Brody Hollister, the local sherrif.
After Brody's wife is killed by a drug addict out for revenge, Brody vows never to trust drug addicts again and as chief of police, he will not tolerate Phoenix House. Neither Brody or Summer expected the strong attraction they felt for eachother. The two must work through their problems to find love.
I highly recommend this book. The only question I have is this: Coming from the Pacific Northwest I know exactly what area this book is set in. It's called Leavanworth, Washington, not Osuma! The only thing I could guess was that the author didn't want more hoards of tourists coming to the most beautiful area in the state of Washington.

Dr. Elliot Hunter is at the absolute end of his endurance when his father summons him to Montebello. Elliot has been in terrible emotional agony since the loss of his wife and daughter some years ago. In the wake of his grief, he slept with his younger sister's best friend and broke her heart. Elliot is filled with self-loathing and is seriously considering taking his life when he is summoned to the foreign country.
When Kate discovers that Elliot is nearby, she is livid. She feels as if she has been set up by his family. As their attraction growns, Kate is mightily conflicted. Elliot is still in love with his dead wife and has made it very clear that there is no place for another woman in his life.
Ms. Detmer Riggs has a fantastic book here, rife with realistic emotions and healing heartbreak. The payoff was immensely satisfying. The only problem I had with the book was a minor one. The plot background was a little jarring and may have been ebtter served in a prequel of sorts.
Kudos, Paula. I drooled over Taming the Night. You didn't disappoint me with this book. Definitely a must read and a keeper that you'll never forget. This lady is an amazing talent.

This book has attracted controversy in the past because it deals with date rape - a subject which is often in the news these days because of the concern over the legal fraternity in getting it treated fairly in our politically correct world. So, here is a subject to be handled carefully and, to be fair, PDR does so in the main. However, I did not really warm to her heroine. Frankly, Carly Anderson is not someone I would like for a friend. There is just a touch of hollering "no" at the point of no return and that is, of course, the problem with the whole topic of date rape. Also, for a very intelligent woman, she allows this one episode to cause her to make some questionable choices in her life; she is not a happy woman when we meet her and you really have to wonder why she has not been able to be more pragmatic about herself.
Her hero, Mitch, is made to suffer disproportionately, in my own view, for something which he did at a very young age. PDR makes this man a paraplegic at the height of a fantastically successful career as a professional athlete. He does, in the main, rebuild his life but he still suffers - there is no truly meaningful relationship in his life and his physical disabilities are horrendous although he does cope very well with them. He is a very charming man and desirable one.
There is a "hidden baby" in this book. And, sadly, this is where PDR lets herself down. Although Mitch meets and loves his daughter when finally he is allowed to know her, Carly and he (really Carly in my opinion) decide to keep her paternity a secret. This is where the plot becomes clouded and departs from what some may view as the reality of the modern world. Denying a child knowledge of its paternity is, I think, probably a worse "crime" than date rape especially when the father is loving, caring and willing to take full responsibility.
The issue of IVF for paraplegics is explored here as well which is interesting because it allows Carly and Mitch to start again. However, this child will know its parents but not its sister. This issue has provoked discussion elsewhere and is never resolved by the author.
I liked Mitch. He was gritty yet realistic in handling his disability. He suffers and is tortured about his actions and their outcomes but handles them better and more maturely, I think, than Carly. Carly is, I think, the character that is a little bit two dimensional.
A book which continues to cause discussion. If you like PDR then it is not to be missed. I have always wondered why it never got released, as far as I can tell, in the UK. It is PDR at her angst-ridden, tortured hero best. I loved Mitch but would not like to have lunch with Carly. Highly recommended for the issues raised here: date rape, retribution, suffering, disability and paternity.

Sheriff Ford Maguire had no time for romance. Keeping the peace in Clover, South Carolina kept him busy, while reminding him that most people weren't to be trusted. Then single mom Sophie Reynolds came to town testing Ford's notions about love.
A Desperate Woman
All Sophie had left in the world was her infant daughter- a child she would protect with her life. She had no intention of getting romantically involved , especially wih the town sheriff, the one person who could uncover her startling secret. But Ford wasn't the type of man a woman could resist for long.

"Family By Fate" is the second story written by Paula Detmer Riggs. I would have to rate this story close to "The Way Home." Liza and Max, total strangers, were on a skiing trip when their paths crossed. They came to know one another better, and fell in love. Later, an event happened that changed Max's life to the unexpected, but Liza knows that she can change him for the better.
In the third story, "Baby On A Doorstep," Caroline finds a baby on her doorstep by mistake. While she is searching for the father of the baby, she finds someone who she falls in love with. The problem is that he is not as willing as Caroline to be a family.
This book, "A Bouquet of Babies," is one that I would recommend to anyone that loves to read good romances.
The other story by Paula Detmer Riggs is equally heart-wrenching with Lisa and Max embroiled in an unforgettable passion. The other by Ms. Bagwell tells of Caroline Pardee falling in love with the father of a baby she has found.
A BOUQUET OF BABIES is worthwhile for fanatics of Ms. Howard and heart-rendering stories, but for those who have read "The Way Home" in her past books, the appeal of this book will be undermined though.THis is not to say that the other two authors are not good - they are equally credible. BUT with Linda Howard, she is incomparable.
The second story by Paula Detmer Riggs is a heart-tugging, heart-warming, and uplifting story. This is the first time that i encountered this author and i'm heavily impressed. "Family By Fate" is reminiscent of the film "An Affair To Remember." Even the poignancy of the film is carried in this story. You'll surely adore and admire Max Savage as much as i do. He's lucky to have such a formidable heroine like Lisa. The story offers delightful scenes, lots of interesting characters, has a vibrant pacing, steamy, and towards the end, i got the feeling that i was reading a full-length novel. I'll definitely grab other books from this author.
Stella Bagwell's "Baby On A Doorstep" makes an enjoyable read as well. Caroline Pardee finds a baby by mistake and in the search for the baby's father she finds a handsome but unwilling guy.
Three in one- "A Bouquet of Babies" is a book i can recommend to anybody who loves beautiful romance.

I initially bought this anthology because of Rebecca Paisley, but found I liked her story the least. Cleopatra's eccentric nature became tiresome after a while. Not my style. However, I enjoyed both Paula Detmer Riggs and Carole Buck very much. Enough to try other work by them. CB's story was very good because the woman wasn't perfect (size 6, etc.) and came to realize her own beauty. I really enjoyed this story the best. PDR's story showed a man's side of pain and how he needed to heal before he could move on with his life. These stories were a nice departure from typical storylines. Overall, I would keep this book because it is different from what I normally read.

From the moment we meet Summer as she remembers her misspent youth to the moment she regains her family, falls in love with the hero (Brody) and ultimately finds the one thing her life has always been missing, we are taken on a roller coaster of emotions. Ms. Riggs is a master at sweeping you into a story and making you never want to leave.
TAMING THE NIGHT is a gem!
