Trinitarian Theology Past and Present
Careful theological scholarship is the means by which each age can review its theological past. Among its justifications is that new conditions provide new eyes with which to view our inheritance and thus to correct a distorted present. It is scarcely disputable that we owe some of the greatest theological writing to the need to controvert and refute those heresies - or, rather, those different forms of the one underlying heresy - which would turn Christianity into its opposite. Future generations may well have cause to thank even the most tiresome modernism and political correctness for their focusing of questions that would otherwise have gone unexplored. How much more can we thank those great minds, beginning this century with the ecumenical trio of Barth, Rahner and Lossky, who have reminded the church of the centrality of her confession of the triune God. Not all the plants in the garden, are, however, worthy of cultivation; the sheer fashionableness of trinitarian categories should remind us that there are trinities and trinities, and that in particular there is a continuing and unreconciled difference between East and West that cannot be healed except by careful and scholarly examination of the overlaps and differences. This study of the work of two modern British theologians reveals not only that British, nay English, theology has something important to offer, but that a comparison of two of its representatives from different generations opens up aspects of the relationship. The character of the theology of William Temple, not now much discussed, is becoming clearer with a measure of the clarity that hindsight provides, and this book adds to our understanding. His movement out of his early grounding in British idealism, cautiously transcended as the years go by, was in part the fruit of a deepening of trinitarian insights. Especially in this context, his essentially western direction provides a useful contrast to aid the chief scholarly contribution of this study, the retrieval of the trinitarian theology of John Richardson Illingworth. Often dismissed with faint praise, and simply classed along with those whose work on Lux Mundi puts them into a fairly recognisable class of rather immanentist high church Anglicans, the originality and depth of his contribution is here made interestingly apparent. It is at this place that we learn of the gains of the recent interest in the theology of Eastern Orthodoxy, for to see Illingworth with the eyes given by our recent re-education in the Cappadocian contribution is to see him anew. Here is indeed a western theologian who does offer possibilities for a measure of genuinely ecumenical conversation.

Agent's note
I write this review with a heavy heart. My name is Sally Richards and I was the agent on this project. I was a personal friend of the late Don Richard and helped him conceive this book idea. Don Richard and co-author John Brodie worked very hard through this material that you may find difficult to read. But, this book may very well save your child's life. Even though I don't have children, after reading this book I now tell friends (who are parents) about things that they never considered risks before. I'm not talking about being paranoid, I'm talking about protecting your children from preditors who walk among us. It's a fact. 140,000 names were listed in the Department of Justice missing Person's Clearing House, about a third of those were children.

There are people who find your children a great temptation for their sexual fantasies and murderous thoughts. That's a fact. All you need to do is read the long lists of child predators who have been released into your neighborhoods (you can go to your local police department and demand a list) to know that this is not paranoia. These people cannot be "cured," and often when one is captured for an abduction, they're often repeat offenders. There was something in their past that pointed clearly to the fact that they would become pedophiles, or one day be capable of murder. Arm yourself with this book and the study of cases and predator behaviors and you will be in a better position to identify risks and protect your children.

The words inside this book may be difficult to read; these pages tell the story of the many years of research Don and John conducted that details the thoughts and actions of men who treat children as objects of sexual pleasure. When I did the first round of editing on this book, I remember thinking how terrified I would be if raising a child in these times. Don and John were very close to their work and, at times, I had to tell them to back away, to be objective, but it was even hard for me to not loathe the people they were writing about. Finally, we came up with a book we thought told the story in a fair and helpful way that educates parents about the patterns and methods of child abductors/molesters.

Read this book and keep your children safe.

California Senator Richard Rainey, John Philpin, PhD, Forensic Psychologist, Francis Koopman, Esq., Lieutenant NYPD (retired) and US Senator Dianne Feinstein all endorse this book.

Proceeds from this book will go to the Amber Foundation for Missing Children

Great guidebook for travelers and scholars.
Richardson covers all the basics in just a few pages. Most of the book is devoted to specs on about 55 crosses throughout Ireland and photos from several different angles, which is a particular detail she attends to. She also includes information on similar Georgian and Armenian crosses, which seem to be related. Richardson has done extensive research in the area of high crosses, and studied with the likes of Nora Chadwick and Francoise Henry. This is a great intro (but only an intro) and the paperback would be a wonderful guidebook to take with you on Cross Hikes in Ireland.

Social London
Richardson's book, London & Its People: A Social History from Medieval Time to the Present Day, is a fascinating survey of London through the occupations and diversions of the people who have made up the English capital for the past thousand years.

This book presents London in the extremes (rich and poor, powerful and powerless, etc.) as well as in the middle, mostly where it is today. London, founded as a remote outpost of a major empire, later became the centre of a much more vast empire, one of the extremes present in the historical development on the city. London was spared much of the turmoil which plagued continental capitals; London has been spared invasion and much upheaval, churning its way along a remarkable historical path.

Interesting stories, complete with paintings, drawings, and photographs, make up the main part of the text. One such story is illustrated below:

'King's Bench Prison, St. George's Field, circa 1800, by Pugin and Rowlandson. This building of 224 rooms, was renowned for the freedom of its inhabitants. It was quite easy to buy 'liberty' of the walls, and was a much desired place of incarceration. Women were allowed to live there, and traders such as bakers and tailors could move freely in the building--at the height of the gin epidemic there were at least 30 gin shops in the precincts.'

Another great illustration is contained below.

'The 1869 Debtors Act abolished imprisonment for debt other than for money owed to the Crown. It also provided that those who were already in prison for debt could be freed with their debts cancelled. This produced a rush of people anxious to be incarcerated for a few days so that their debts could be erased, and a good many people crowded into the last City debtors' prison at Whitecross Street. '

Both stories include a drawing or painting illustrating the scene.

Richardson illustrates contrasts current in each historical period as well as contrasts between the historical periods, i.e., London going from being a city of producers to a city of financiers to a city of consumers. Included also is a wonderful chapter, entitled 'Strangers to Our Shores' in which foreign perspectives of the city are recounted in an interesting style.

Marine Mammals and Noise
This is and excellent book for the researcher, graduate student, or undergrad (with some physics under his or her belt), who wants to learn about the effects of underwater noise on marine mammals. Currently this topic is the focus of much interest and is one of the most active areas of marine mammology research. Richardson et al. do an excellent job explaining the technical information, and have organized the book chapters in a logical sequence. Most terms are explicitly defined and the use of technical jargon is kept to a minimum. This book is a must for any researcher, or student, in the field.

Remarkable book for negotiators
This book has a real wow factor. I was amazed at how much ground it covers - game theory, pscyhology, decision analysis, negotiation stuff. There's a great balance of technical help with easy-to-read conversations between hypothetical negotiators making the tricky concepts easier to understand. You probably won't want to read it from cover-to-cover but every chapter has really useful insights on how to negotiate better with positive or negative counterparts.

THE Sherlock Holmes
To me he will always be THE Sherlock Holmes. Regardless of what other people feel about Basil Rathbone, Carelton Hobbs, Clive Merrison and even Jeremy Brett, John Gielgud will always be the perfect Sherlock Holmes. And Ralph Richardson will always be the perfect Watson. Together they eclipse the whole of their peers, simply by the way they portray the master detective and his dear friend. That is the way Sir arthur wrote them, and that is what you will hear in these stories. My only complaint is that they cannot contain every scene that Doyle wrote for each story, but such were the constraints of 1950's radio (or 1990's radio for that matter). The episodes were written with a clear understanding of drama, and acted with the skill of master performers. What stands out to me is the mutual respect that Holmes and Watson share, as opposed to the browbeating that Rathbone dished out on Nigel Bruce's Watson ("Do you have to be so dense!"). And the mysteries are darn good besides. If you want to introduce someone, particularly a young person, to the world of Holmes you can do no better than this set. These are the tapes that endeared not only Sherlock Holmes to me, but dramatic radio and the skills of John Gielgud as well. You will love them.

What a life!
Though he lived over 200 years ago, John Richardson was the first navel surgeon. Way ahead of his time, he performed operations of bellybutton-alteration on such contemporary superstars as Martha Washington and Betsy Ross. That was before the Colonies revolted of course!

It really works!
I read this book, tried it on my hard-headed 16 year old son, and wow, was I pleasantly surprised at the results. To this day my son remembers some of those stories I told him. Then I used it on my teenage daughter, with similar results. Now I am buying it for a friend who is going through what I went through. This book helped turn Mom the Enforcer into Mom the Communicator. Thank you John Alston!
