A book on how things used to be.
Man-o-man, I used to love looking at old buildings and would be in awe of the amount of work that went into them. All of the art work, craftsmanship, and downright labor. Well, this book really brings to the forefront through numerous period photos and floor plans. The book actually contains very little wording, but then the photos and floor plans are enough to tell you many things about the structures. Most of the buildings are in New York City and I recently had the opportunity to visit. As I walked along the many streets, I came across buildings that had been built by the architects and it was just awesome to look, of course, only from the outside at the wonderful structure and compare it to the photos and floor plans that are now etched in my mind. I look at the book and discover new things about the works of art that I hadn't known before. Sorry if it sounds a little romantic but when I pass one of the new office buildings or structures, well, I'm just not moved by them. Dave Sanchez

A great atlantan intellectual
I have known Robert Craig through his teachings at Georgia Tech, and only this book demonstrates his overwhelming knowledge of Atlanta and it's only and few representative historical architectures. Through this book, many a style mostly art deco and streamlined are defined and throughout the cultural aspects of Atlanta. A Very good resource.

An excellent book for beginners.
This book an excellent one for beginners being introduced to C++ programming. The author take small steps and builds up on the language gradually. The topics of arrays and pointers have been introduced and presented in an excellent manner. The simplicity with which the material is explained is unparallel. The explanations are concise. This shall be a good book for beginnners to start with.

Mathematics based on the just because principle
Like so many of the "hard" sciences, mathematics suffers from a perception complex. The public view of the practice and practitioners is that of a hopeless muddle of esoteric babble. But to paraphrase E. T. Bell, "mathematicians are as human as the rest, sometimes more so." One could make a solid argument that human essence can be boiled down to the creation and appreciation of art, employing a strategy in playing games with the only goal that of winning a non-essential prize, doing things for the mental exercise and seeing patterns where none is immediately obvious. All of these items are found in applied mathematics and in this case it is called recreational mathematics.
No artwork requires more thought to understand than that of M. C. Escher, where so many objects start as one thing and are somehow metamorphed into others. Many of the current ideas of fractals can be found in his drawings. So many "simple" games that we are exposed to have strategies that are mathematical in nature. But some, like chess, seem to defy solid mathematical analysis and show us once again how powerful the human computer really is. As the numbers of such puzzles appearing in newspapers and magazines indicates, a large percentage of the public enjoys a good mental tickler.
This collection is a distillation of those thoughts, featuring mathematical explanations of most. The works here show once again that the distinction between mathematics and the rest of the world is an artificial one put up by small minds. Mathematics is a joyous endeavor that provides more joy and frustration than any other ever imagined by intellects on par with that of humans. It is a joy to read about people doing mathematics for no other reason than recreation. It is also sad to realize that so many people who proudly wear a badge of mathematical illiteracy are so far gone that the do not realize it when they are employing mathematics in a recreational manner. For a short time, one of the best-selling books was one describing how to solve the puzzle known as "Rubik's Cube." As is explained here, the solution is based on beginning group theory.
A welcome addition to the literature, this report of the Strens conference is refreshing. For it shows mathematicians and their ilk having fun doing mathematics. To be blunt, that is something that the public simply does not understand.

A Good Source of Information on Richard Doddridge Blackmore
At least a portion of the book's title lives up to its name in that it is the best source yet for information on the LIFE of Richard Doddridge Blackmore. As a very distant relative (fifth cousin four times removed) it provided me with a wealth of information about his family history.

A waste of money
Mr. Roeper has said that he "doesn't get" the fuss about Charlie Chaplin, and he gave a "thumbs up" to JACKASS: THE MOVIE.
Why anybody would pay good money to read a movie book he has written is beyond me.
Hysterical -- absolutely cannot live without .
We love this book - it is a humorous book not to be shelved within the confines of "video directories." Ever since Adam and Eve have the sexes disagreed over almost everything but one of the biggest issues men and women (at least the men I date never agree upon are films to watch -- but often times we are too afraid to say what we really think. This amazing book touches upon all of the thoughts and feelings men feel on womens films and vice-verse, however derivitive they may be, of the constant battle in the video store. Instead of saying "i disagree with you" you can now say "um, turn to Richard's comments. page 28..." It gets one's point accross and no one's feelings are as hurt.
Video didn't kill the radio star...it may have broken up a few marriages but kill? Never.

Interesting and almost captivating...
until I read the part that said the Imperial Family spoke German quite often, that Alexandra was basically a whining female doh (ahem), and that Alexei was a little brat who one would want to smack across the face. These "American telegrams" that are "the dramatic new evidence" is all a bunch of crock--anyone who has studied the Imperial Family as people in-depth can figure that out easily.
