Tedious for those not reading the Bible daily
Your view of this book is likely to depend on your religious outlook on life. The book is full of Bible-Quotes. It uses biblical personalities and settings as examples for burnout and the things that bring burnout about. Of those examples that do not figure biblical personalities, at least half have some strong connection to the church.

Personally, I feel that a book that deals with a clinical psychological issue, such as burnout, should rely on academic research and reasoning. That is missing here. Time and again the bible is taken as the source of all truth and the author's interpretation as our guiding line for doing things in life. Especially the latter makes it very difficult reading for people with academic training who are used to take a critical view of unsubstantiated statements.

For Christians facing burnout, this is must reading.
This book is practical, readable, and worthwhile. Even if you're so burned out you can hardly face another book, this one is worth the time! Lots of case histories and real life examples, so you know the authors have dealt with real people. Very solid biblical foundation. Non-technical explanations make it easy reading for anyone. Solid, practical suggestions for avoiding or escaping burnout. This is two books put together in one volume. Reading this book helped me identify the strengths and weaknesses, as well as the potential hazards of my own personality type. Best book on the subject I've seen.

Bad plays and screenplays from an over-obvious writer
Larry Kramer won an Oscar for his screenplay in WOMEN IN LOVE, and has received quite a bit of attention for his political dramas. Sadly, they're not very good. WOMEN IN LOVE still reads as campy and overbaked, and the dramas seem shrill and uninteresting. In an essay on his much-lambasted satire JUST SAY NO, Kramer vigorously champions what he sees as the play's genius (he favorably compares himself to Aristophanes!), and though he rightly scores points against the prissier critics who deplored the play's lack of good taste he fails to consider that the play was (and remains) obvious and unfunny.

Kramer is an inspired political writer, and though you may disagree with him his essays are always worth reading if you care about gay identity. But he is a weak and obvious playwright and screenwriter.

On becoming a great writer.
"Women In Love" ranks among the finest films from an unrivaled era in screen history. "Faggots" was and remains a seminal American novel, and "The Normal Heart" one of the best and most produced American plays of the twentieth century. This book charts for lovers of great writing exactly how Kramer forged himself into a literary triple threat. It's easy to be distracted by his formidable civic achievements and confrontational public persona, but as an artist and living writer of fiction he ranks among the grand masters. This book is a treasure.

1000 pages of truth
This books tells the amazing story of the notorious House Unamerican Activities Committee, 1938 to l968, and tells it in a highly dramatic way -- presenting the reader with the actual dialogues that took place in the committee room. It is a tale of folks you have heard of, but never seen in this light before -- among the names are Ronald Reagan, Richard Nixon, Gary Cooper, Paul Robeson, Jerome Robbins, Zero Mostel, Elia Kazan...,and on and on. A rogues' gallery? Well, judge for yourself which guys are the rogues and which the heroes (if any)...In any event, the book is a terrific read.

Hard core history
A fascinating book--we're talking transcripts of the sessions before the HUAC. You'll discover who sang for the committee (and how loudly; some of the famous people who caved before the committee will suprise you), and those who ran it in riotous circles. The best reads: Zero Mostel, Pete Seeger, and Tom Hayden. Original history, without the filters. (The index, however, is terrible.) A must have.

liberals are inexplicable
This book is intended to show how bad those mean old anti communists were and how noble and heroic the communists were. Except. By showing us the communists themselves, by letting us read their actual words, it is impossible come away with out feeling intense revulsion. These people were unpleasant liars at best, Evil at worst. They condemn themselves. Why anyone thought that printing transcripts of their testimony would help the liberal cause is beyond me. Communism can only be defended if things like facts and morality are not allowed to cloud the issue. The book is a valuable resource for the anticommunist cause. Not what the liberals intended. But their myopia is all encompasing. Inexplicable.
