Wordy and Disappointing
I was very disappointed with this book. I found the writing style dry and the photographs/layout just not up to par. It almost seemed like somebody's thesis with som photos thrown in. Somebody needs to do a large format picture book on this subject with more about Jackie!

not enough for the money
The writing is dry. The pictures are not the best and it fails to show whnat the White House looked like before the restoration. Everyone says that it looked horrible so why not give the reader a taste of what was so wrong with it? If you can find the White House guidebook that was produced to pay for the restoration read that instead. It has much betters photos.

Superb!
A superb survey of the White House decor of President & Mrs. Kennedy. The book documents the ideas, process, decisions and choices behind the stunning interiors of the Kennedy White House-both the public and private rooms. What comes through the text is Mrs. Kennedy's leadership and vision - combining taste, history, beauty and great cunning - just to create and then manage this melange of egos, talent and intelligence was an accomplishment, and the results live on today (albeit not as beautifully or artistically). We all gained a greater knowledge and appreciation of our nation's historic and artistic past because of Mrs. Kennedy's work.

I've corresponded with Mr. Abbott and he's been most kind and interesting. He assisted in the current show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, "Jacqueline Kennedy: The White House Years," and there's a number of items on display relating to the White House decorations.

Read the book, catch the exhibit (it moves to the JFK Library in Boston in the fall).

Not appropriate for children!
I was hoping for something to read to a child. Instead I found Santa mixed up with the NRA and toting a Confederate flag. Adults may find this an amusing rendition of St. Nick's visit with clever illustrations - but I'd never read this to a child.

Full of Belly Laughs
If you or someone you know is a genuine redneck--then buy this book! Davis crammed his book full of great lingo, authentic redneck details, and hilarious parody. Just don't try to drink an RC cola while you read, or you'll end up laughing and spewing it all over the book. Take it from one who knows!

Very creative and amusing--adults & children will like it.
Amusing and very creative in content. Sure to hold attention. Very good for Christmas. Adults will appreciate the book as well as children. Very colorful! Worth the money!

Great illustrations, story not what I was hoping for
I was hoping for a story line with a little more zip, something more like the Irish Night Before Christmas or the Cajun Night Before Christmas. The illustrations are wonderful, the story is nothing special. Same old Night Before Christmas with a mild twist.

Beautiful illustrations, lots of fun
This book has beautiful illustrations that really bring the story to life. The classic tale of the night before Christmas told with a Texas twang, it will delight adults, too. James Rice replaces Santa's reindeer with a team of Longhorns, and the winter snow with the Texas dust. It's even more fun if you can find a Texan to read it out loud!

A Great Book
After reading the Cajun Night Before Christmas to children for many years and anticipating the release of this book, I was very impressed with the work of the authors. As usual, James Rice did an excellent job of illustrating. I am always impressed by his drawings, especially with the expressions of the characters. It was a great follow up to the Cajun Night Before christmas. I have added it to my vast collection of the original Night Before Christmas books and its variations. After I master the dialect and get the words to flow, I will probably be reading this book to kids for years to come. Thanks, Jenny, Amy and James

The Land That Time Forgot

Not good literature, but great reading.
It may not be Edgar Rice Burroughs at his best but, The Land that Time Forgot is great adventure. This book contains the three Caspak novels; The Land that Time Forgot, the People that Time Forgot, and Out of Times Abyss. Three stories that chronicle the adventures of three different men on the Antarctic sub continent of Caspak; a volcanic depression that supports a diverse and dangerous prehistoric eco-system. Bowen Tyler, the hero of the first story, leads a disabled German U-boat and English survivors into the isle of Caspak where they need to fight for survival and try to find a way to back home. In the second story would-be rescuer Tom Billings crash lands in Caspak and meets the prehistoric woman Ajor. Together they fight their way back the Ajor's home territory. The final Story, and perhaps the best is about English lieutenant Bradley and his capture by the highly evolved Weiroo men. His story shows the best of Burrough's rolling adventure style complete with unbelievable coincidences and narrow escapes only to be caught again to prolong the story. So suspend your disbelief and plunge into the world of 1914, fighting the Kiaser's men, Dinosaurs, and strange cavemen. The back drop and story line more than make up for the dated romantic ideas. Not as tight and focused as Tarzan, but where else does one get submaries and dinosuars?

The Land That Adulthood Forgot
It is hard to know exactly how to review this trilogy by Edgar Rice Burroughs. I remember being given the first book, The Land That Time Forgot, by my father and devouring it, followed quickly by the next two volumes. My tastes were not sophisticated but my eagerness was in the extreme and these three books took me away to a place of dinosaurs, evil Germans, stalwart heroes, beguiling animal-skinned beauties and a mystery that defied evolution (or, more precisely, any known logic or science). I was truly in the land before time: childhood. Imagine my joy on discovering all three very short books wrapped in a modern new package that I could feel confident reading on a commute to work without undue embarassment. These books are still fast paced and have a truly pulpy, nostalgic feel to them. They can grow repetitious read all at once and perhaps the border between pulpy and musty is a fine one. They are more adventure and action stories than tales of the imagination (although the third installment does conjure quite a number of interesting images). The writing is simple and the dialogue is ludicrous. But the whole experience is still a delight as I was transported back and for that I am thankful for this wonderful new edition.

Still holds up well after all these years...
While Burroughs was denigrated as being a "pulp" novelist for most of his literary career, he was clearly a better writer than the vast majority of genre writers who publish today, and he was also a better story teller than most. The complaint of a reviewer that Burroughs was an obsessive racist would be hilarious if it weren't so ignorantly misguided. Similarly the complaint that Burroughs had no ear for dialogue is drenched in ignorance. The dialogue of early 20th century America is not the dialogue of late 20th century England, a fact that should not need explaining, but unfortunately explication is needed for those who who lack the most rudimentary of analytical faculties. I find Hemingway to have a tin ear for dialogue because the people I grew up with didn't speak like Hemingway characters at all, but I don't criticize Hemingway for that and suspect that he accurately recorded the cadence of his fellows. Burroughs had a good feel for the common man of the early 20th century, which is one reason his books still sell.

The Land That Time Forgot is a great adventure by a very good fantasy writer. Check it out while it's still in print.

[bad] :(
... the scripts don't work. The downloaded scripts are different to the ones outlined in the book (neither work) and the after sale support is non-existant.

The first book of the series was great... This rarely works and this book is no exception...

leave this book on the shelf = save yourself the frustration
1. too many errors

2. the codes don't work.. and you don't get support from the team that put them together... you will have to be overly nice to even here... "Oh! we will get back to you" from them

3. Full e-commerce app? what is an e-commerce system without a checkout feature? they basically leave out all the meat and expect you to work at the same projects you bought the book for on your own

basically, looks more like a couple of tutorials taken from the internet and thrown together in the form of a book in a hurry to capture the market before a better one does.

LEAVE IT ON THE SHELF!!

Increase Your Flash Application Skills
Flash is becoming much more of an application/interface tool than ever before. This book does a good job of furthering the skills taught in the first book. While the book doesn't follow with a case study pertaining to all chapters, it does give you methods that you can pick and choose from, so that you don't necessarily need to read from beginning to end to get real and usable benefits.

I particulary enjoyed Chatper 5, which shows some very good ways of using MySQL with Flash: getting lists, details, and searching without having to load new pages or go back to previous pages...that's the good thing about Flash interfaces.

The book is a rather big step in difficulty from the first book, but worth it.

Snow Garden is an Eden for This Talented Writer
I have read both of Christopher Rice's novels and he has matured greatly as a writer since the publicaiton of his last novel. Anyone who is now foolish enough to attribute his success as writer to his mother's fame is either blindly jeleous of his success or ignorant of the talent Christopher posseses. The book is filled with plot twists and secrets which keep the reader on the edge. His use of flashbacks to fill in character's past and tie them in with the present action shows a great deal of time and thought was put into The Snow Garden. The imagery in the novel makes you feel as if you are seeing the action through the character's eyes rather than a third party discribing the scene. Using imagery and ideas taken from Hieronymus Bosh and weaving them into his thriller is a brilliant move for Rice and helps give more insight into Bosh for the reader and understand the plot better. If Christopher has mautred this much form his first novel, I can only wait to see the power of his third novel. Anyone who is looking for not only an entertaining but stimulating read should buy The Snow Garden.

Christopher Rice has done it again!
Another great book from Christopher Rice. After reading 'A Density of Souls' last year, I could not wait until his next book 'The Snow Garden' was released. I was not disappointed. The has written a very intriguing gothic mystery.

This story centers around fictitious Atherton University, and key characters Randall Stone, a Freshman student, and Dr. Eric Eberman, a married, closeted professor. Enter a cast of characters from different walks of life, all with their own secrets in their background, 2 deaths nearly 20 years apart, both ladies with relationships with Dr. Eberman, and a bizarre sex cult, and you have the basis for a very good novel.

Like A DENSITY OF SOULS, I could not put this book down. Christopher Rice has definately distinguished himself as an author with his own talent. Now with two very good novels under his belt, people should no longer be saying he only got his book published because of who his mother is.

I cannot wait until his next book, whatever it may be, is published.

Way to go Christopher! Keep up the Good Work!

Another excellent book by Christopher Rice!
This book is full of mystery and suspense. Randall is a college freshman living in the dorms. His best friend is Kathryn, who lives across the hall. Randall and Kathryn are able to discuss anything, even Randall's homosexuality, but neither one has the courage to discuss their pasts. Kathryn's secret past deals with her boyfriend during her senior year in highschool. Randall's past, well, you'll have to read to book to figure that one out for yourself.

Then there is Jesse. He is Randall's roommate. He is absolutely gorgeous and has more sex than any college freshman I ever knew. He seems to always get the person he is persuing, into bed. He also has some deep dark secrets in his past.

Finally, there is Dr. Eric Eberman. He is a college professor. He also happens to be married and closeted. When Randall arrived at Atherton college, he already had his eyes set on Dr. Eberman. He had read a book that Dr. Eberman had written, and knew the material by heart. This aided Randall in getting what he wanted, Dr. Eberman.

As with just about any good mystery, there has been a murder. At first the cops suspect the husband, but then determine that the death was an accident. However, some of the details are rather disturbing to Randall, so he begins to do some detective work. As he searches for information and clues, he puts himself in danger.

I highly recommend this book. It is a very easy read. I did not want to put it down. I read it in just two evenings. I can't wait for Christopher's next book.

Review of Rice Gold
This is a great book. Of course, you'd have to have an interest in the time and the place, the 1st half of the 19th Century and the coast of Georgia. Emminently readable, with good expositions of the various agricultural practices of the time. Well done.

Rice Gold is certainly worth a read
As a Georgia 'native' and historian with a deep interest in the field, I found this to be a fascinating text. But I would certainly agree that you have to have an interest in the topic--in which case it is well worth buying and reading.
