Get your feet soaking wet
I've just finished getting through a book on Lingo, and decided to pick this book up in the hopes of becoming an Actionscripter. The writing style of this book is excellent-- it wastes NO time with senseless conceptual jargony and gets straight to the point. You'll find yourself actually learning at a quick pace through a series of short examples of Actionscript that become more advanced and build on previous examples in the book. Better yet, the CD is packed full of open source examples for every short tutorial in the book.

This book is the definitive actionscript reference. Though, beginners be forewarned-- this is not a book for those who are not familiar with the fundamentals of programming and those who are not fully acquainted with Flash's interface and a conceptual understanding of animation.

Excellent Tutorial and Reference
I started with Macromedia's Flash MX ActionScripting Advanced and I learned a lot. However, it does not contain a complete dictionary. I bought John Davey's book and in addition to the complete dictionary in the book, it is also on the CD. I keep the online version loaded when programming Flash. Furthermore, the 400+ pages of tutorials, are simple, plentiful, and each one illustrates one learning objective. Both books are good, but this one is better.

Not JUST the best ever AS reference for designers...
I thought this would be a reference. Well guess what, I was wrong. This is a reference in the back half, but a How-To in the front half. I'd say, skip every other ActionScript book till you buy this one. If I'd known this would have tutorials in the first half (yes the first 400 or so pages are tutorials), I wouldn't have bought some of the other ones I have. Combined with the CD content, this book is a great first book for the intermediate animator moving into scripting. And, it will stay usefull for as long as you are using Flash MX. Between this book and the O'Reilly book "ActionScript for Flash MX: The Definitive Guide, Second Edition" by Colin Moock, you'll have all you really need. Then you can buy the specialized stuff on games or UI or whatever.

To a Time so Long Ago!
I was one of the men mentioned in the book, I thought it was an excellent book and very factual...it really did bring me back to a time so long ago. The best part was that Frank Grzyb wrote about everyone...if you were there it will bring you back. If you were not there it will give you a true insight into how it really was there at that time. Thank you Frank!

Eye Opening Experience !
In reading these stories, you can feel what these young men and woman felt, how scared they must have felt yet their friends and loved ones didn't know. I felt like I was there with them, they will never forget what they went thru nor should we !

simply written expression of complex experience and emotions
I found the simple style a compelling and true account of the memories and feelings of ordinary american boys, who served at one of the most difficult times in american history. Very little BS or false glory, just a real account of real Americans, when less sacrificing refused to serve.

beware of james
noone could evre make as much out of the traditional ghost story than MRJ. angles, details, objects. by changing one thing, focusing on something else, etc., james shows the potential in the classic elements. he doesn't stretch it too far, and he doesn't have to. he plays around with subtle changes, but his writing is serious. great descriptions, excellent at details, james is considered the ghost story master by a great many. check out how he carries out the details in Canon Alberic with the mysterios book, the descroptions in Ash-tree, the mysterious lurking fear in Count Magnus, or the plot in Oh whistle.....

Best ghost stories by best reader
M.R. James is one of the greatest writers of ghost stories ever; we all know that. Add Nigel Lambert as reader. I enjoy audio books almost as much as print, but never have I heard such a perfect combination of voice and material as in this collection. Lambert masters accents and voices of every kind. This--and the companion volume," A Warning to the Curious" are an unending delight, well worth the price.

These stories shill you to the bone!
Unlike many writers of today, i.e., Stephen King and other pretenders, Ghost Stories of an Antiquary by Montague Rhodes James(Editor), et al are very scary indeed. The story "A school story" and "Oh, Whistle and I'll come to you, my lad" are both very demented. M.R. James strength is his subbtle way of incorporating horror; since it is what we do not see or what we think we hear that is truly frightening. Blood and gore is not scary. However, being in an old basement with a candle that is hardly burning and then hearing a strange sound that will even scare the bravest person; now that is what M.R. James deals with, i.e., the demons inside our heads and the evil that resides around us. I will definetely read more stories written by this genius.

Descendants of John Milliman
I bought the book on John Milliman and the companion book on Aaron Milliman a few years ago. I refer to them constantly and have provided information to other family members doing Milliman family research. A great compilation of names and information and WELL indexed. If you have a Milliman in your family tree this is the book for you!

Great resource for Milliman research. A must!
Ms. Austin did a supberb job in researching and compiling information on the decendants of the first known Milliman in America. If you are researching the Milliman family line you will be absolutely thrilled to obtain this book. She even included pictures when available. What a treasure!!!! Thank you Ms. Austin!

Fantastic book
I find this book extremely useful as a reference tool, as well as an entertaining read. In addition to reporting daily happenings of the Reds throughout their storied past, Rhodes and Snyder sprinkle insightful and entertaining essays throughout the book. RedLeg Journal is the prized possession of my Reds library.

For the true Red's fan
Before I began reading this book I considered myself an exceptional Reds fan. After finishing this book, I realize that I have forgotten more about my beloved Reds than I can remember. This is an excellant book, and I highly recomend it to all Reds fans or baseball fan everywhere. Greg Rhodes and John Snyder have written great books about the Reds before, but I truly believe that they have saved the best for last. It was sad when I finished the book, I can't wait to see what they write next.

The History of Battery B, 1st Regiment Rhode Island Light Artillery

Book Description
Battery B served throughout the war in the Second Corps. The outfit saw its first action at Ball's Bluff. From there, the battery eventually accompanied the Union army to the Peninsula and was engaged at Fair Oaks, Savage Station, Glendale and Malvern Hill. Next, the battery fought at Antietam, and then, at Fredericksburg, the outfit followed the infantry in close support in front of Marye's Heights. At Gettysburg, the battery was part of the artillery that held Cemetery Hill. The intensity of the action in the battery's front can be noted by the fact that one Confederate cannon ball struck and lodged in the muzzle of one of the Rhode Islander's guns. After Gettysburg, the battery continued to serve with distinction at Mine Run, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, and the siege of Petersburg.

What a hero!
Gervaise's father wishes that his son will grow up to be a Knight of the White Cross, and so Gervaise leaves his dying mother and travels to Rhodes. When he arrives at Rhodes he never dreams of all the adventures he will be undertaking, and the excitement he will be involved in. First comes the rescuing of Ricord and Santoval, after which the Grand Prior knights Gervaise and his comrade, Ralph, which is a great privilege for the boys. Some time later, after visiting the house of Signor Vsados, Gervaise mentions to Ralph that he did not like the looks of the Greek who had also been at the Vsados household. Ralph laughs at him, but Gervaise's suspicions are aroused even more when he sees the man talking to a slave of the Order. After reporting to Sir John Kendall Gervaise suggests he disguise himself and go among the slaves, to try to find out if a plot is being arranged. What will he find? Gervaise has many more adventures, and also a little romance, for Claudia De Forli bestows her colours on him. Gervaise also sets an example by the boy-galley that he was put in command of. It is the only galley ever to have only young knights appointed to it. In the end Gervaise takes part in the Siege of Rhodes, which was a bloody affair. Don't miss reading this story of a gallant Knight of the White Cross!

Alabama : Atlas of Historical County Boundaries
If you're interested in this sort of thing as I am this book could be of great value however the price is unreal. I have a CD that does much the same for the entire country at a third the price of one state however this book is MUCH more accurate and shows county boundaries that only occured for as little as three days. The CD is also easier to use. That said I'll likely ask for the book as one of those Christmas presents I wouldn't buy for myself.

Not original. Free on the internet. Not very useful.
I had already downloaded "The Other Side of the Mountain" and read it. Nowhere on this site is it mentioned that this book is simply a reprinting of that "FREE" work. It was not even spell checked or edited. Do a search and download the original. If you THEN want a printed copy, order this one. The only thing new and improved is the very nice cover.

The book is basically about 94 very short and dry retellings of small battles between the two adversaries. Not much is useful or educational. Not even entertaining. I was looking for education and enterntainment.

There is another FREE companion piece called "The Bear Went Over The Mountain". Do a web search on each and download.

-Copernic.com is the best web searcher I've found.

Informative Guerrilla Tactics
I have a certain curiousity for Military Science and this was a great book that related to Guerrilla Warfare. There are a total of 15 Chapters, 14 of them with many different real life vignettes (around 92). As well many interviews with real life mujahideen fighters who were there. Anybody who posesses a distinct interest in Military Science or Guerrilla Warfare will certainly enjoy this book!

Great Raw Material, Helpful Commentary, Missing Closure

It may not be obvious to the hurried shopper, so it is worth emphasizing up front that this book not only has the full support of the Foreign Military Studies Office of the U.S. Army, but is provided courtesy of the United States Marine Corps Studies and Analysis Division.

The selection of stories may have been done by the Soviets from whom the work is borrowed, but in any event is quite good--16 vignettes on ambushes, 10 on raids, 2 on shelling attacks, 6 on attacking strong points, 2 on mine warfare, 6 on blocking enemy lines of communication, 2 on siege warfare, 4 on defending against raids, 3 on fighting heliborne insertions, 5 on defending against cordon and search, 14 on defending base camps, 6 on counterambushes, 3 on fighting an encirclement, and 14 on urban combat. One wonders if those responsible for inserting our forces into Afghanistan in the failed effort to capture the Taliban and Al Qaeda leadership intact, ever read this book. It is quite good.

Although it provides very professional U.S. commentary after each vignette, commenting on both Soviet and Mujahideen behavior in the combat situations, it fails on two counts: the index is terrible (mostly an index of names, rather than combat lessons), and the final chapter is a whimper rather than a sonic boom--this book should be re-issued immediately with a proper index and a concluding chapter that pulls together the concise troop leading "bullets" for each of the 14 combat situations depicted by the vignettes ennumerated above.

One final note: the availability of this book via Amazon.com deserves special commendation. I have been trying for years to get the U.S. Army's Strategic Studies Institute to get all of its very superior and valuable publications made available via Amazon.com so that its taxpayer-funded knowledge would be more widely available, and have simply not been able to get them off the dime. As 9-11 demonstrates, knowledge that is not shared can ultimately exact a great price--what our war colleges produce, at taxpayer expense, needs to be given broader dissemination, and Amazon.com is "the" portal for monograph and book form knowledge.
