Excellent
Reynolds and Noakes have put together a very helpful book for fans of McEwan and academic readers alike. They provide detailed analyses of "The Child In Time", "Enduring Love", and "Atonement". But rather than insisting on one particular "reading" of each novel, they proceed by asking useful questions about certain passages, techniques and themes. These questions open up the texts in a variety of ways, encouraging you to reflect and re-read and ultimately to make up your own mind. The initial essay and interview with McEwan are informative, as are the selected reviews and the glossary of literary-critical terms at the back. (My only complaint is that an analysis of "Black Dogs" isn't included, which I think is one of McEwan's best.) Overall, this is a book which recognises the complexity of its subject, yet proceeds in a way that makes it accessible without "dumbing it down." In that sense, the book is much like those of McEwan himself: it invites you to explore some fairly complex issues, but in a remarkably engaging and entertaining way.

An excellent analysis
Far too much history today is mired in ideological or methodological disputation. Here is a book that proves it is still possible to do first class work in spite of it all. Well-written, insightful, and analytical. One hopes for more work like it from this author.

A Must Read For Any Lewis and Clark Fan
This is a well researched and engaging historical text set 100 years before Lewis and Clark. It is a jouney of a Native American across this continent from the Atlantic to the Pacific Oceans outlining the rich and varied cultures of the many peoples who inhabited this land before the impact of European settlers. The author is comfortable and familar with his topic and weaves an engaging story. I strongly suggest this work for anyone who wishes to know, study, or to become aware of the history of the people who have inhabited this North Americian Continent.

I enjoyed following the main character through his journeys and learning the stories, medicinals, sports, traditions of the various tribes with which he traveled and stayed.

The notes at the end of each chapter bring you current with what is happening today in each area of the journey for the Native American People and make it a rich teaching text.

Conan Kicks!
Conan O'Brien is one of the funniest men alieve and this book proves that! This book evolved from a sketch on the show(one of the best, other than Pimpbot 5000). He and the Late Night Writers are amazing, they come up with so many diffrent sketches that its not even funny. If you have ever wondered what celebrities babies looked like this book is a must have.
HAIL CONAN!

heart,
ivy the barbarian

He's very funny
The book is funny with hilarious pictures and commentaary. In my opinion Conan O'Brien is the best show between the hours of 12:30 AM and 1:30 AM on nbc.

A Must Have For Any Conan O'Brien Fan
This is definately a must have for any Conan O'Brien fan. Late Night with Conan O'Brien is simply the best show ever. Conan O'Brien is the funniest man alive and he along with the Late Night writers have only shown that with this hillarious book. I can't wait until In the Year 2000 comes out. Conan O'Brien is truly a genius when it comes to truly hysterical, unique and orginal comedy, I give this book Five Stars. Read over and over again.

Excellent Book Especially for beginners
I have read many Books on the topic of Visual Basic, this one being my first foray into VB.Net. This book contains the best compilation of exercises I have seen in a beginner's book. The explanations are thorough and clearly explained. In addition, the authors appear to go to great lengths to expose the reader to a wide variety of functions throughout the lessons. I will admit that the editing staff for this book might benefit from taking an English class or two, as some of the grammar in the book is painful to read. However, in spite of the ineptitude of the editing staff I think you will be hard pressed to find a better resource for learning VB.Net. This is a how to manual, not a literary work of art. While I have noticed the poor editing, it is not substantial enough to make me want to throw the book across the room (which I have done with some books in the past). I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who needs to get their feet wet with VB.Net.

Stop thinking about it and buy this book.
I purchased this book 3 days ago and because of other commitments I have only read as far as Chapter 4. However in that short space of time, I did the right thing by myself and wrote every example out in the book so far (nothing beats learning by doing, at least as far as I am concerned). I must admit, having gone from a flat 0 in VB experience to now writing basic programs by myself without referring to any book or online help.

Even if the remainder of the book turns out to be [weak]), the info I have learnt already has made me very happy with the purchase.

I have not seen one error yet, everything works as shown and is explained so anyone can understand it.

If you are new to VB.Net or programming at all, buy this book. It is without doubt the best book I have ever seen on the subject of programming. This is my first Wrox book and it probably will not be the last if this is the quality of their products. This book Wrox! :)

Good Learning Environment
I am a Systems and Network Administrator who used Visual Basic 6.0 to automate many of the redundant tasks typical of this environment. I don't claim to be a "developer" but have been developing tools for a long time. I typically do not like WROX books but after sitting down at my local bookstore and plowing through 20 books on VB.NET, this one stood out. It has good examples that you can follow, it assumes you have basic programming/development skills and it is well written. If you are a developer by occupation this is probably not the book for you. For those of us who do not release our code to production environments this book has served me well by not being incredibly basic nor losing me in advanced topics.

Disappointed !!!
I enjoyed the Matthew Reynolds? e-commerce book last year and thought that this guy will keep doing good books. I was wrong, this book is for kids under 10 or for someone who never learnt any programming language.

Only for biginers in VB
if you have a little experince in VB5 or VB6
Do Not Buy this book
it waste your time i will try to finish it in this week and g to better book .

This is the best book only for beginers in ((PROGRAMMING IN GENERAL))

Errata Incomplete and Not Up To Date
I like the WROX series books a great deal. I like the fact that they have beginning, professional, and other books on the same subject. Their site publishes errata that you can write into your book before starting it.

But, then as I go through the book I find more typos, illogicalities, or wrong descriptions (such as telling you that you will see a particular screen upon hitting a certain menu and that is not the screen that you do see).

I started sending in errata, one chapter at a time and was duly told that they would be sent to the "editors". Well the "editors" seem to be a "black hole", because, since about 2-3 months ago, after starting sending in what I found, I have never heard back from WROX AND there are no new updates to the errata on their site.

Therefore, please note that some or many of your WROX books may or probably will not have up to date errata for them. I will also be sending in errata for Beginning ASP .NET Using Visual Basic .NET.

I'll report back as to how that errata process is working also.

interesting but inaccurate
This book has some nice descriptions of the area and gives you a starting point. But it is full of internal contradictions (e.g., 2 day trip in the description but 4 day trip in the summary) and outright errors (e.g., the phone number for White Squall is wrong throughout the book) and the information is getting outdated faster than you would think (e.g., the fellow who welcomed kayakers to tea out on the Mink Islands has moved and some marinas have new names and phone numbers). The black and white photos are disapointing, being colour originals not well reproduced in grey scale. At best, this book is less useful than talking to a local resident or outfitter. More up-to-date (and verified) information can be found on the Internet. If you know nothing about the area, this book will give you a sense of what to expect and ideas on where to go. Just double-check any facts before you go. -- They're writing another guide? Here's hoping they get a better editor this time.

Looking Forward to the Next book
This is wonderfully written by experts. It is a book for amateurs, intermediates, and advanced alike! I am looking forward to Reynolds' next book about the waters around Cape Cod.

A "must have" if you want to paddle Georgian Bay
If you want to paddle in Georgian Bay, then this book is a good investment. The author provides practical information for numerous routes around the bay, and the required experience level for each. He also includes trip lengths, camp sites, fees, access points, and possible extension routes. This book is sure to enhance your Georgian Bay experience.

Should have been VB.Net Programming with the Public Beta 2..
This book is not based on Visual Studio.Net Final Release!

I have read the book front to back including introduction page. I just realized that the book was based on beta 2 of Visual Studio.Net, too late for a refund. Anyway, I went on to read it and found out that the book was not very much organised as tons of '...we'll discuss this on chapter xx ... ' appear no less than 5 times in a single chapter (on some chapters). Mispelled words also are catching enough to say that this book was in a hurry to be printed.

If you're looking for a book that covers thorough details on window forms and web form control howtos, this wouldn't give you enough detail on those topics. Web Services is equally a mere introduction, with about two pages of discussion on UDDI as well as WSDL. Not much on ADO.Net and XML.

I should have borrowed this book instead and skim through it or should have bought it for 20 bucks less. Besides, it's already outdated. I hope the same authors would come up with a second edition that has richer detail...and send me a free copy.

WROX site shows this as out of print
I was planning on buying this book and noticed the out of print note on the Wrox site. Not exactly sure what out of print means.
Looks like other books based on the betas say out of print on the Wrox site.
If this book was released in August 2001 then it should have been based on the beta. They might plan on releasing an updated version.

Best book so far for VB.NET
I'd say this is the best Professional VB.NET book so far. I like the the ADO.NET part and VB control part of this book. Better than O'really ASP and VB book.
