The Heidegger Controversy : A Critical Reader
Published in Hardcover by MIT Press (1993)
Author: Richard Wolin
Amazon base price: $50.00
Used price: $59.72
Average review score:

The Question of Heidegger's Nazism.
This book includes some decent essays from all vantage points concerning the question of what is to be made of Heidegger's Nazism. The first section of the book includes essays from Heidegger himself, including "The Self-Assertion of the German University", "Overcoming Metaphysics", and the brilliant interview with <> magazine "Only a God Can Save Us Now". The second section includes the important essay "Total Mobilization" by Ernst Junger as well as several other letters and essays dealing directly with Heidegger's Nazism. Finally, the third section includes essays attempting an interpretation of Heidegger's Nazism from various standpoints. A disturbing aspect of this approach is that many of the individuals writing these essays concerning Heidegger are themselves avowed Marxists, who supported a totalitarian regime far more bloody and repressive than the Nazis. For instance, we have the essay of the despicable individual Herbert Marcuse. This is from a man who lumped all of humanity into two categories: the progressive and the regressive. One can only wonder what sort of scheme Marcuse and his politically correct Marxist cronies had in store for those he deemed "regressive". However, despite this, this book is important for understanding Heidegger's relation to Nazism, for his interview "Only a God Can Save Us Now", his later thought, and also for the essay "Total Mobilization" of Ernst Junger.

The historical mode : fashion and art in the 1980s
Published in Unknown Binding by Rizzoli ()
Author: Richard Martin
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

Re-relevant in fashion's present.
The thesis of the historical mode is always worth re-visiting, although it was addressing that moment at the perilous close of the 1980s, when fashion's excesses had peaked - or, more accurately, piqued.
A sweet and pretty book, with splendid Josef Astor photos and iconic fashion runway shots of the nascent John Galliano and resplendent Romeo Gigli and Karl Lagerfeld. A worthy and timeless text dealing with worth and time in fashion.

The History of Surgery in Houston: Fifty-Year Anniversary of the Houston Surgical Society
Published in Hardcover by Eakin Publications (1998)
Authors: Kenneth L. Mattox, Richard Martin, Joseph S. Coselli, and Laurens R. Pickard
Amazon base price: $39.95

Not only a view of the history but a glimpse into the future
To a native Houstonian, the names and faces are familiar, almost "household names". These were the men who shaped not only surgery but medicine in Houston. This is a well-written, motivating review of those who have been held in such high regard. Within the pages, one finds not only the science of surgery but the art and romance of a profession. It is with great enthusiasm that I recommend this book to all who have an interest. There is one man missing from the list of Houston's Surgical Leaders and that is the Editor of the book, Dr. Mattox himself.

Translator's review
I am the Richard W. Scheimann who completed this translation in 1964. You can read my translator's forward to this book (....)

In 1964, when I was preparing this book for publication, I wrote:

"If I were asked why I undertook the arduous task of translating Koenigtum Gottes I would reply: "Because I once met Martin Buber." When I was a graduate student in History of Religions at the University of Chicago my teacher and friend, Prof. Joachim Wach, had as his guests for an evening Martin Buber and a small circle of students. Our distinguished visitor did not give us a prepared speech, but instead responded to our interests and questions. I do not remember anything that was said on that occasion. I remember only that Dr. Buber spoke slowly and softly, gazing intently into the eyes of each one who addressed him. I would not have said (as some have) that he looked like an Old Testament prophet, but he certainly looked like a German university professor of a certain vintage, with his black suit of very heavy wool cloth and his massive gold watch chain draped across the front of his vest. At any rate I came away that evening convinced that I had met a genuine charismatic."

I was pleased to learn that the original book had been reissued and is again available in this edition. In 1998 I returned to this work after 34 years, and found that it held more meaning for me than ever. The five star rating is for Buber's work itself, to which I hope my humble translation has provided access to a wider American audience.

Original and highly intuitive contribution to the field
The concepts of projection and inverse projection represent a highly original and intuitive contribution to the study of linear and mixed integer programming. These ideas allow Prof. Martin to explore a challenging subject in a manner that is clear and easy to understand. This text is usefull both to the novice looking for an introduction to mathematical optimzation and to the expert interested in exploring a novel approach to the field.

I was especially impressed with the material on how degeneracy can be handled with the Simplex method. The book presents a fascinating twist on Bland's classic row selection rule.

Wonderful photographic survey of wild horses
This is a fabulous photographic survey of the major remaining wild horse populations of the world. The variety of breeds & settings maintains interest from cover to cover.

For each of the 7 breeds there is an extensive history, physical description, behavior profile & current status. The photos capture the character & personality of the horses in their natural settings.

There are athletic mustangs of the American west, primitive horses of Asia & Europe, rugged British ponies, beautiful white horses of the Camargue in France, & a hardy band braving the winter on Canada's Sable Island.

Packed with large color photos, this book will be a unique & treasured addition to any horse lover's library.
